For example, get in a brand new ship, Not even completely outfitted, jump into space in order to dock next station over. Couple of people outside, some of them in much more powerful ships and what happens?
Your systems begin auto-targeting the Battleship not 2,000m in front of you.
I unlocked him and no harm no foul but still. It would be nice to have complete control of ones weapon systems at all times. Surprises have never worked out in my favor in this game :)
So what are the reasons your systems might lock onto someone. The ship in question was an Omen with a few small energy weapons fitted.
The Omen itself is not really important, It's for a mining, industrial alt who simply needed something besides his retriever or bestower for the odd moment where he flys wing for yet a different alt :)
It's the lack of control that makes me nervous :)

There's an option in the Escape menu, "General settings" tab, bottom of the centre column: "Auto target back". If this is set to more than zero, it will automatically target anyone who target-locks you.

You are 100% right. Without a doubt, set this option to zero to disable auto-targeting. It can and will get you killed eventually (e.g. you're locking a wartarget in a frigate, and have your weapons pre-cycling, when a neutral in a battleship locks you. Auto-target back locks him first, fires on him and CONCORD comes to show you what they think of you. Or worse, a friendly remote repper from another corp locks you for reps, and you target and shoot him. Now you both get CONCORDed...)
It's the kind of option that makes things marginally easier for very new players, perhaps, but once you have some idea of what's going on around you you shouldn't need this at all. You don't want to wait until someone has locked you (and probably started firing) to start targeting them back. If someone is a potential threat, you should lock them first and be ready!

sure enough, it was set to one target. I sort of thought that locking somebody might in (most?) cases be considered a hostile act.
Thanks for the information. I can afford to lose a ship or three, would just rather it was due to something I was caught offguard by or that I initiated.
[caught offguard by] -> Yeah I know, but not like that.

using the ESC menu to turn auto-target off is one of the best pieces of advice a new player ever could get... Use it! Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed dimensions of 400x120 pixels and filesize of 24000 bytes -Sahwoolo Etoophie |

^^This is very true.
Targetting someone isn't hostile in itself......it's only when you attack with a weapon or EWAR that it's considered an overt act of aggression. Targeting is dangerous though, because it brings you one step closer to that mistake. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.
