That's a terrible box. Dark, no contrast, nothing shouting at you, it would honestly look like an empty space on the shelf. You could stand consumers with their noses touching that box and they would grab the one next to it instead....
The whole point of this thread is to underline that eve should be advertised as is and not as an optimal with huge ships (capitals) directly on the front of the box... It gives out a wrong image that it is 'easy' to get into those ships... Most people here realise that as a new player you will most likely spend at least 1.5 years of training before you can do capital ships.
Ofcourse this is different with alts, but alts usually have experienced people behind them that know what they are doing...
And there is nothing wrong with calm boxart... As long as it sticks out and isolates itself from the rest, so that people will notice it in the first place.
It's about time I put something sensible in here, but I couldn't really come up with something so you'l have to do with this. Are you like really bored, or did you not notice this is my sig? |

Most new players won't have any idea what the difference is at first. Not to mention, it does provide them a goal: "Aw man, that ship on the box looks awesome! I want to learn how to fly it one day..."

It turns a lot of new players off. I know its a necessary learning experience as do you but meh, if they will buy it, do it imo.
It wouldn't make *any* difference at all. The reason some people get turned off by the long skill-up to begin with is because they are not the type of people who will enjoy a game like this. Give them 10m sp to begin with and they will complain that they don't have enough isk to buy the stuff they can use; give them 100m ISK to fix that and they will quit because they have no idea how to fly it and lost everything within 30 minutes of undocking.
It's a niche game. By definition this means most people won't like it. Working as intended.
It wont make much difference to most. It would make CCP more money. And i wouldn't dream of having it to 10 mil sp, just the equivalent of what that money would allow you to train in that time if you bought gtc's.

Well, I guess Atari knows how to sell stuff... This won't be a collector's edition box aimed at hardcore gamers, this will be a "Buy me! Buy me! Buy me!" box with an ugly "Games for Windows" banner on top to ruin it, that will be seen in the shop from a mile away. Most of us will probably not like it and will be happier not buying it at all.
Now, if CCP wants to create a neat Steelbook case, with cool graphics aimed at collectors (and without the "Games for Windows" banner dumbness on top,) that will be something most actual Eve player will buy. But I don't know if they have such plans (and I seriously doubt it.) ----

But do we really want players who buy the game just because of a box filled with lazers and explosions? :P The whole point of it was that "less is more", and with all other boxes being filled with explosions and stuff the EVE box would represent the calm, dark and vast space in EVE.. Which I think appeal to most sci-fi fans.. People who expect an action game will be disappointed..

Problem is rather that they'll be like "cool ship I'll want that" *buys game* *creates new character* "hey what's this little ship? I can't fly huge ships? It will take me HOW LONG!? 2 YEARS TO FLY IT!? AND IT COSTS BILLIONS OF ISK!?"

Edited by: Destination SkillQueue on 12/12/2008 00:58:09 I hope they don't just use some horrible, epic space combat picture on the box. I fear they might judging by the adverticements of EVE I see on the webz. It might look nice, but it misses most of what EVE is about. The game has many other aspects and I would like to see CCP include those in the box. That is propably the reason my favorite EVE video is "EVE never fades". It doesn't just show the usual fleet fights, but shows many aspects of EVE. Pew pew is nice and all, but CCP should not ignore the potential customers interested in non-combat competition and interaction.

They should make that in the old card boxes rather than these new DVD plastic crap. I still got my Freespace 1 box with jewel case. Pure awesome.
Also with having a huge box like that, should have the installation disc, a CD with tutorial videos (perhaps fanfest videos aswell, or alliance tournament), a 30 day GTC and a nice fold out map of New Eden. Perhaps even have racial version of the game, with posters of the races image you see when choosing them.
Edit: **** I would buy that.

well, without trying to sound antagonistic - so what?
EVE is more than just the first few months and if players come into the game, realise they can't get the "end-game ships" immediately and quit, then they wouldn't have stuck around for long anyway so I'm not really sure it's any great loss.
I'm not saying that the box should or should not contain images of capital ships, but EVE has never been about short-term gain and if a new player doesn't get that by the time the end of their trial period is up then this game isn't going to be for them.

Just a thought: it would be pretty easy to spend 10M SP and still not be able to fly anthing but a t1 frigate:
Learning Skills, Engineering, Mechanics, Navigation, Electronics, Signal Analysis, Gunnery, Missile Launcher Operation, Drones, Spaceship Command, Weapon Upgrades, Adv Weapon Upgrades all to V, plus eg: racial frigate IV, racial weapon type IV: 10M SP
A character with that starting set wouldn't really be able to actually do anything that a normal starting character couldn't. He'd just be a lot more effecient at flying his Kestrel/Rifter/Incursus/Punisher.
He'd even still have quite a few basic skills to work on; shield, armour, capacitor. etc.

Well it certainly shows how exciting EVE can be!
To be honest they should really just show Bantams mining Veldspar outside Todaki on the front, at least new players will get a feel for what their first month of play will be like.

They should make the box a cube---that'd give 5 square sides to show different aspects of the game play, e.g. a fleet battle side, a mining op side (imagine a big belt with 30 different mining ships of all sizes), a missioning side (the most spectacular views in EVE are the mission backdrops), a trading side (an Obelisk in the center, surrounded by various marked windows), a POS side ("own and operate your own starbase"). And all the boring details on the bottom

I don't see what difference it would make whatever the ship classes on the cover would be. I don't see the one buying the game who has never played it to think "Oh, it is a Moros class dreadnought on the cover. I think I won't buy the game because I can't fly it in ages...". What sense does that make? I think it just needs to look cool and aggressive since after you have bought it you're done the decision anyways. I don't think it will affect the decision to buy the game. :) Born in Caldari State Raised by Khanid Kingdom Living for Amarr Empire Dying for Imperial Pharmacy |

If it had some good concept art, or a history of EVE book, or something good in it that was actually worth buying besides the downloadable game client they could get some decent sales.
I also hope by releasing a new box with a new name (whatever the expansion is) they also get a new review, because a lot of people still check reviews online before buying a game and the old one wasn't too flattering. Granted the game has changed a lot - but a number is a number. _______________________________________________ **I SURVIVED FERROGATE 2008!** |
