This hasn't been touched upon anywhere and I was wondering. The Orca is supposed to fill the void between regular mining levels and Capital ships. Except the real advantage with the Rorqual is its ability to maintain several Industrial cores for Compressing materials down so that we were able to store more materials on the ship itself.
What hasn't really been touched upon is if the Orca will be able to use the same. Not as many at once of course, but still be able to use them.
I ask this because you lose a lot of the advantage which is the whole point of having this type of vehicle by not having access to the Industrial Cores.
Does anyone know what the plans are on this front? ----------- Ragna |

As I understand it, the purpose of the industrial core is to compress ore for easy transport to stations in low/no sec or back to high sec, this is not a problem in high sec because stations are abundant and you can refine the ore in almost every system, theres no real need for compression.

Its a matter of time usage. By being able to compress the ore still one can remove the need to transport the materials from the Orca to the Space Station as much. A lot of these depends on the eventual cargo space we have available, but even with that, its a concern. The point of the ship is to facilitate a more centralized mining effort, just on a smaller scale. Just like it's larger brother the Rorqual. It just sems by losing that compression you lose some of the advantages of the ship. Not all of them. But some of them. ----------- Ragna |

Because the orca is not a capital ship. If you want a rorqual, pay the extra billion ISK and move to 0.0
This ship fills the gap perfectly. It packs up a couple mining barges to an op, and is a great hauler. It also fills the role of the mini-freighter people have been hoping for. --------------------------------- Let's make CLONE VATS useful! |

Running the industrial core isnt cheap... you need ice products to fuel it.
why waste ISK when you can easily haul to a station?

And this is exactly the reason, why the Orca will be completly useless.
Will the Orca make mining more efficient, you need less haulers? No, you still need the same or more numbers off them...
Will the Orca be a good hauler replacement? No, while the Orca is hauling, who should be give the bonuses?
And wft are all of you whining about ore? There isn't just ore in hisec.... ever heard of the mysterious stuff called "Ice"?
But the macrominers will be really happy with this very expensive JetCan... they will be safe in hisec then, cause nobody can steal from them... good Job CCP

Edited by: Kerfira on 09/11/2008 12:20:27 Another use for the Orca is exploration.....
Stash all the ships needed in the Orca and fly it on an alt. Your main character can then switch between different ships for probing/salvaging/hacking/fighting/mining/scouting as needed.

1st. will being in another ship opening the Orca's corp hanger it is relley slow, 30 seconds or more to see the different divisions as you move from Div to Div.
2nd. The fill bar on the Orca's corp hanger allways shows full. At the time i had only 161,104 m3 total in the Orca corp hanger, and as items were added the fill bar always showed full.
3rd. It should not make any different if items other than charges are in a ships cargo bay trying to dock in the Orca's ship maintenance bay. If charges are not going to make a differancs in the docking ships mass or volume, then anything else in the docking ships cargo hold should not matter eather.

Why do people insist on making their hauling character the ones that give out bonuses? Bonuses should be granted to the characters which are constantly sitting in the belt, i.e. the miners! Just doesn't make sense. And as far as time spent without the bonus, that's like 30 seconds between the time a hauler docks, unloads the cargo, and undocks. Big deal - you lose out on 30 m3 of ore every two hours... I don't know how others run their mining ops, but based on comments like the above it seems some are incredibly inefficient at mining ops.

The Orca seems to be meant as a buffer between miners and hauler, no more, no less. Due to the buffer there's less spikes in supply/demand and your ore is more secure.
It's not an uberwtfpwnminingmonstah.

Originally by: Orca's Description It is perhaps a stepping stone towards capital ships, filling a void between the regular and capital class ships making it more affordable with a wider range of use in all areas of space as it can use stargates and does not have a jump drive.
Its no more a cap ship than a freighter.

One of the devs called it something like a "Sub Capital Industrial Command Ship" or SCICS for short, so its sub capital.

I *STILL* want the idea I sent long ago to CCP to be implemented on Orca's and Rorqual's.
Basically, the ability to dock transports/haulers with the Orca. Allowing them to move ore cargo internally instead of jet cans from the Orca's cargo hold to the haulers cargo hold, then you undock the hauler and fly to the station to unload.
This avoids having to drop a jet can from the Orca for a hauler(avoiding ore thieves bonus) + you won't need ore compression on the Orca. I can see the Rorqual having the same ability as well.

You already have this ability. Your mining ship sits within 1500m of the orca, your hauler does too. Both ships transfer ore into and out of the orca's corp hanger. No jetcans required.

While the Orca was *sold* as an Industrialist sub-capital, it serves other purposes as well.
***
I can see them used for high-security warfare and here's why.
The ship has a corporate hanger which can be used for logistics (ammunition, drones, and the like). It has a ship maintenance bay which can allow a few extra ships to be carried. It also has a refitting array so that you can fit your ships in space.
If fitted properly and stocked/utilized properly, they can be tiny little high-security carriers. Move into a hostile zone, deep-safe the Orca and cloak- it'll be a logistic depot that can move around.
I would LOVE to see a 125m3 bandwidth and a 600m3 drone bay, however.

macro miners will get use out of it ccp has satisifed that playerbase quite well seeing as tho they apparently provide 20% of the active accounts ingame. For everyone else it has limited roles more low sec than 0.0

not really no. They gave it a bigger cargo hold then an indy yes, but this thing is neither the requested mini-freighter nor the ship transporter. In order to balance it for the mining role they intentionally crippled those two features since I guess they feel that no one should have either of those ships.

This thing looks a lot of fun to play around with. great for wars and mining ops, different situations. Like someone said, a mini carrier.
Shame I can't get my hands on one at the moment! |
