I've NEVER done any pvp in EvE. Once someone at a gate shot at my drake but bugged out after I volleyed him back. That's it...
I'd like to try pvp in EvE. I'm considering grabbing a frigate layout from somewhere and trying my hand in low-sec space. I figure frigates are cheap enough to learn with.
My question is --> Do caldari have frigates that are good at belt-hopping and piracy? I don't really know how piracy/pvp works in this game but that is the part that I aim to learn. I'm just trying to get off to a decent start by flying a good ship.
Kestrel? Merlin?
Does anyone have a layout of a good T1 caldari frigate for PvP?
Any help is appreciated. I'll probably be flying solo as I'm not in a PvP corp yet.

Caldari frigates (and most of their ships) fail at solo pvp.
The reason is simply because they use the same slots for shield modules than for tackling gear (warp scrambler, web).

Kestrel is rather good. Just give it a go. Try to kill other frigs by staying out of web range.

I fly Caldari too and I've learned the hard way that Caldari frigs are not built for solo pvp. It's not a total lost cause though. I like the Kestrel personally. Here is a thread on the Kessie that you might find useful. Linkage
Here is the setup I like to fly, though I think the Kessie is gonna take a big hit with the upcoming nerfs.
Highs 4x Limos Rocket Launchers (Caldari Bloodclaw) (t2 launchers if you can fit em with Bloodclaw T2) - Better range and way cheaper than faction
Mids AB Web Warp Disruptor (or Warp Scram)
Lows DCU/BCU 100mm rolled tungsten (200mm if you can fit one)
The setup is really cheap though i would recommend using a good web which will really help against faster ships. The scam doesn't have much of a range which is why I go with the Disruptor, though with the Scram now disabling MWDs you should probably fit one. The strategy is to try and keep your target at range (7km) more than worry about transversal. Set your ship to fly away from your opponent so that they dont close in too quickly. Most t1 frigs try to get close and pound you but you should easily out DPS them at 7km range.
The Rocket Kessie is unconventional for a Caldari ship which are normally suited for shields but I have killed a Rifter in my short PVP career. Honestly though expect to get killed more times than you will kill something. Good Luck.

Edited by: Pax Scindus on 09/11/2008 15:33:23 Once you get tired of the T1 Frig scene, move to Interceptors asap. Racial Frigate V, and Evasive Manuvering V is all they require, but then youll need Navigation V, Afterburner V, High Speed Manuvering V, get into a T2 MWD... Fit it with ODs, ISs, a web, a disruptor, and whatever weapons you like- I prefer a couple rockets (no cap use, none of that pesky turret tracking), and VAMPS (That MWD is like fitting a 7L V12 in a Camero- you can WATCH the needle drop) Then zip around the cosmos at 6km/sec and scare the bejesus out of the unprepared. Of course, that set up costs around 16mil, but it is SO worth it. I keep 5, fully fitted, in station close to the action. Good times. The problem with frigs and piracy is that the gateguns always hit, no matter how small and/or fast you are. That means frigs will find only very few targets in lowsec.
Youll have alot more action in a corp or faction warfare. -

Edited by: Lord Zekk on 10/11/2008 01:04:24 Inties with a good set of Nav skils is definitely the next step, which is what I'm training for now. You should look at joining a pirate corp if you are serious about piracy. Havinga a few mentors will go a long way. I've learned so much about PVP from Ecatherina W and the others in BBQ (Alliance) which would have taken me months to learn and practice if I was doing it all on my own. The other plus is you will almost never be flying alone. 2 or more well piloted intelligently fitted frigs will always be significantly more dangerous and flying Caldari in a group will really work in your favour. Another inexperienced member of my alliance and I almost took out a Wolf in T1 frigs until his friends showed up sent us home in our pods. My first kill was as a part of a small group of frigs and we took out an Enyo, something I still can't pull of solo.

The Griffin.
Highs: 2x launchers, 1x blaster Mids: 1x web, 1x warp jammer, 1x mwd, 1x ECM (multi or racial, depending on knowledge of targets) Lows: 2x Distortion amps
I've used this before, and some people underestimate this little bastard. If you're looking for random battles without any prior recon of your potential targets, use a multi-spec ECM. If you do some homework and "case" your system and the targets there, fit a racial jammer respective to what you need. You'll need pretty good ECM skills to pull this off, and you'll really only be able to kill frigates and maybe a poorly fitted/piloted t1 cruiser, but its hilarious when you lock your target and simultaneously web him, warp jam him, and finally keep him from locking you back. Its a fun way to pvp with other frigates. I'm not a master of pvp, but this is very fun to play around with and cheap too! Also, if you have some extra cash, add an ECM rig (I know, adding rigs to t1 frigates is very stupid, but we're having fun here!) to really put the hurt (ECM-wise) on your opponent. Have fun...because isn't that what this game is about in the first place?
