The ships in EVE come in many styles and shapes. You could prefer the styles of some of the races over others, you could hate or love asymmetric ships (CCP certainly doesn't like them anymore), the opinions about the 'clean' look of the new Minmatar style differ, and the sleek, smooth 'shell' theme of Amarr seems to be a thing of the past, when looking at the new Maller.
But no matter of all these styles and themese, in my opinion there has been always one very big flaw in the way CCP designed their ships: instead of designing the ships around the guns, the art-department in most cases just seemed to have designed a cool-looking ship and then started looking for places where they could tack on some (and for battleships really small) guns.
This process of designing the 'cool-looking-ship' first and 'oh-yeah-guns' later, could be seen during Fanfest's design demonstration. The simple thought that most ships primarily exist as a platform to move weapons never seems to occur. The concept artist just choose a cool-looking silhouette and starts to flesh it out, even only deciding along the way what size it should actually be.
I understand how the mechanics in EVE don't allow for coaxial guns and ships having only eight 'maximum-size' turret slots possible, but this can't be an excuse to not make the ships look like they are actually built around their weapon-systems.
The new missile launchers actually forced CCP's art department to actually focus their design-process for the new stealth-bombers always keeping in mind it has to fit the new torpedo launchers. The results are in my opinion the best looking ships in the game.
I also like how this forces CCP to do something different for their T2 ships instead of some (very) lazy re-skin. I hope they will redo the rest in the same manner, starting with the Sacrilege. http://go-dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/Tobiaz/sig_complaints.gif

Amarr ships are fashioned on racine birds..talon, beak...the Maller is a beak talon. Minmatar ships are fashioned after lacy winged insects. Gallente ships are the Buck Rogers, art deco style. Caldari ships...supposed to have some bird thing working there but their destroyer looks like an ANT! (Go figure.)

In one interview some CCP said that they will use this model for some new T1 ship. truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. |

The Purifier looks good, though I think it could be a little rounder around the edges and shaped more triangular instead of oval. Far cry from that stupid looking egghead Inquisitor. It's finally worthwhile owning an SB just for looks.

Completely agree with this. Designing credibly laid out ships that look cool is the way ahead. I understand the argument that Minmatar should have more transmitter aerials and Amarr need to look more like complex machines. As far as symmetry/asymmetry is concerned, the Manticore has it absolutely right - Great job!
Any chance you could go back and fix the new Reaper? It's a real disappointment, lacking any kind of credibility. Sad sad story!

I agree that these redesigns look blatantly awesome, they all look absolutely menacing. Just the kind of little buggers you don't want to see decloaking near you. Big up to all those concept artists, you rock!

This, this so many times. Giving all T2 their own hulls is the best use for art assets I can imagine. "Based on Vexor" doesn't really mean "A very different ship to Vexor, looks exactly the same but slightly different color". It's enough that we have the Navy issues that share the same hull.
Oh and looking very much forward to Black Ops buff & redesign :)

I love CCP's stealth bomber designs. Please pleas keep it up CCP.
Also, can the stealth bombers PLEASE get a look at balancing their CPU/Powergrid and EHP amounts, among other thigns?
The Nemesis looks like a heavenly work of art, but I can't fly it when it has less EHP than its T1 counterpart, or when I can't fit anything because CPU/PG is too low. |

I hope they don't change the T1 hulls. The Tristan is probably my favorite looking hull but think the proposed Nemesis design is pretty ugly and doesn't fit with other gallente ships (apart from the Proteus). |

God no, please make the T2 versions a little different from the versions they are build from, just as an Apache longbow is different from a normal Apache helicopter.
It's good to use the base but give it a change that makes it fit for it's specialized role, like some modifications on the outside needed to: (use a cobert ops cloaking device, large launchers, keeping signature radius down from MWD, make it good using ewar ect ect.) could be as simple as an extra radar dish, extended tubes for launching, plates that cover the exhausts or it's stream. |

The tristan is also getting a new model. Both the bomber and the tech 1 hull will be different from each other.
The new Tristan looks boss, don't worry. : ) Same old ship, with a new fresh touch up. The idea is the new tech 2 bombers share similarities with the tech 1 ship but are in fact, new ships.
Even the tech 1 manticore isn't being replaced, just the bomber, so it can hold battleship missiles.
And yes, ships like the typhoon need to be drawn with guns on it.... so the overall ship design doesn't fail :/ Note, I love the Typhoon, i want a giant cargo ship retrofitted to be a battleship.... but.... i want it to LOOK like a cargo ship, not a mess of shapes with 4 turrets on the top of it in, with no thought put into it. |

The Caldari ship is great but far too symetrical. I prefer the asymetric and almost semi-modular designs like the raven moa kestrel blackbird and condor. Caldari and Minmatarr should be largely asymmetrical. |

I have the Impression that since the first battlecruisers came out CCP had a new concept artist working on the Caldari and that person really hates asymmetry and modular ships like the old Scorpion. Now most new Caldari designs are like these long designs like all BC, the destroyer, freighter and the capitals.
I don't like the new Caldari style too much.
