Edited by: Jarvis Hellstrom on 10/11/2008 16:33:18 Serious question folks - does anyone have any suggestions for invigorating the game?
(And no - you can't haz my stuff)
First of all - I don't play any MMORPGs nor have any interest in them. EVE is it, so none of this 'go to WoW' crap. WoW, Conan etc these do nothing for me. I love the EVE universe and backstory and I like that CCP tries very hard to work with their customers. I like the folks in my corp too.
I trained as a combat pilot - initially PvE and then some PvP when I moved out to 0.0. PvE was dropped because, to be honest, it became boring. Too easy, no real challenge. Just a grind. I do that at work and don't need to do it in my leisure time.
PvP has been to be honest, a really huge disappointment. I don't mind losing - but it's dull win or lose. You fly in, deploy your modules, someone blows up. There's little maneuver, unless you're a nano ship. Combat position is mostly pointless as guns bear everywhere. The whole thing is over, in most cases I've been part of, in seconds. Either I've shown up with enough to make the other guy or gal go *Pop* or I can't hurt them somehow and that usually means I go *Pop*. There's virtually no in between. It's extremely unsatisfying, win or lose. Granted my experience is limited, but a big part of the reason it's limited is because of that experience. Spend weeks working up the ISK for a ship, smuggling modules to 0.0 that you can't get there etc. All that prep and have the ship die in under 15 seconds, even in small gangs with only a couple ships involved. Umm - Yuck!
I'm not sure if that's what CCP intended, but as it is it really seems to need some help. I'm sure the gank crowd will say 'It's fine' and maybe it is for them, but I want more game in my game. Something more satisfying for all my weeks of grinding to put a HAC in space than watching some crescents go red for a few seconds, or watching straight lines on a screen for someone else's ships do the same in just a couple seconds.
I have some industrial skills, but making stuff is really a means to an end.
Grinding for ISK (ratting etc.) is mostly pretty dull. Trading is occasionally fun, but only sometimes.
The most fun I've had in EVE (other than team mission running when it was still challenging which I first started) has been doing smuggling and blockade running and last night getting ganked at a BLUE gatecamp pretty much sucked the fun out of that. Do everything right and lose three weeks of your wife's hard work mining to a bunch of guys who are supposed to be on your side? Gah! I was looking forward to the new Blockade Runner but that wouldn't have made a whit of difference last night. One doesn't spend a lot of time avoiding allies, usually. It's depressing yet common.
So now - I'm looking for something new and fun to try. Perhaps Factional Warfare - but then I lose connections to all my friends. Maybe I should take a Frig out and try and find more fun fights in low sec with the pirates? I've heard rumours they're more satisfying.
I love so much about EVE but it's really hard to like it right now. It's more work than play and I have enough work at work. I'm not emorage-quitting, I just want to have fun at this game so much of which I really really like. I'm looking for ideas, so please be constructive. Whether that's better ideas of how to make pew pew more enjoyable or other new things to try I've missed, it's all welcome.
I won't be bothering to reply to the inevitable trolls, this is a serious question.

I may sound like I'm being a ****, but the reason you found PVP so dull, is because you simply don't know enough about your own ship, as well as all of the other ships in EVE. When you can see the enemies ship, know its strengths and weaknesses immediately, then exploit those weaknesses (or gtfo) the PVP becomes a rush. Study up on the game mechanics and give PVP another shot. --

EvE is full of wussies and wimps who would rather redock or burn back to a gate and jump out of a fight than enjoy the ball busting shoot em ups that should be taking place in the game.
The game itself is wonderful but there are too many "outs" in pvp for the wimpy community that plays this game.

Sounds like you're ready for a break. You know the routine: set long skill -> come back when it's finished.

Don't bother with FW. Its all about people flying the cheapest ship you can put together and you either end up without kills or a whole blob to deal with. Not to mention the fact that even if you accomplish something big like ganking FW members in highsec or taking enemy systems CCP will not give you anything for it; no rewards is gay. Been there - done that - very disappointed.

Hunt down and kill mission runners. Some of them are pretty crafty and hard to catch. It's pretty fun to have their local smack go from 'haha, you're a stupid pirate noob who can't catch me!' to 'you f###ing ###hole ####sucker mother######!...' when you blow up their faction BS.
The game is boring because you have nothing to hunt. No puzzle to figure out. No problem to solve. Killing mission runners is fun, because every once in a while, you get one that isn't completely braindead, and you have to set up a fairly elaborate trap for them. Getting inside someone's head and figuring out what they're going to do five steps ahead of them is quite rewarding in my opinion. Plus, you can make some decent ISK doing it.

I don't find that negative at all. Thank you. I've felt some of that rush dodging gate camps etc. in cloaked ships doing smuggling. That was exciting and fun. I've done some studying and so far it hasn't helped much. The really 'good' fits are either outside my meagre 13 million SPs, outside my wallet or both.
Thanks for the advice though. I shall definitely try (I don't give up easily).

I completely agree! Hunting mission runners is the most fun i've had in the game. Especially when they start hunting me back.

You have too much money and stuffs. You'll enjoy the game more when you've sent it to me.
Yeah, that's a joke. However, there is some truth to it. I fly cheap ships in the Amamake area, playing the solo fighter. I would consider this the most challenging environment I can PvP in with one account (I don't like dual-screen combat, even for scouting... too much data for me to handle well).
Given the amount of isk I have, and the ships I fly, I discovered I can afford roughly 657,600,000 fully-fit and insured ships of the type I like to fly. And that's if I never made more isk. But I'm successful on at least half of my attacks, and thus get some loot, which pays for more ships.
I've got too much money. I personally don't give a damn if I lose a ship or not these days. And that ain't right. It's sucked the fun and challenge right out of the game... if you cannot lose, then how can you win?
So I'm considering giving it all away to friends, leaving myself with perhaps 3 fitted and insured Rifters, and no isk, and seeing if I can work my way up again.
Sometimes things become too easy.

Get out of 0.0
Problem solved.
It's a boring mess of soap opera drama but no real fighting or reward. It blows my mind that people enjoy it. Go find a high sec wardec corp or maybe a low sec pirate one. This game is what you make it, and apparently you're having a hard time finding yourself in 0.0, which I don't blame you for. _________ |

I think you're coming to Eve the wrong way, if you don't mind me saying so. One of the key things about Eve is - no one will ever take you by the hand and lead you to adventure.
You have a ship. Hopefully you have some isk to fit it, and buy a new one if it gets blown up. And that's it. Now, if you're the type of player that just wants to ease back and follow along on a ride, then I don't think Eve will ever fit you.
You've got the ship. You've got the isk (i hope). What happens next is up to you. And what will happen next? Well, the other key thing about Eve is - it's about the people in Eve. Not about the rats, the missions, the star systems.
You've got to interact with other people to make Eve fun. And that's where this game shines, because it doesn't tell you to be good or bad or in between. It's your choice. But if you don't make that choice, you'll play alone in the sandbox, and tbh a mere spade and a bucket isn't much fun for the duration without someone to either build a sandcastle with, or someone to destroy a sandcastle for.

Thank you each and every one.
Every one of you has had excellent points and given me a lot to think about. You have, one and all and without exception gotten the mental gears turning and given me an idea for a new direction to try. In fact, I'm actually pretty hopeful about it, which goes to show that sometimes asking for advice (and listening to it) is the wisest thing one can do.
Very much appreciated.

I built a Fleet support cruiser/gun platform. A Thorax fitted with T2 250mm rails in every turret slot. Pretty much the entire low section is all Reaction Controls etc. to give it enough powergrid to run all those guns, while the mids are a sensor range dampner, an MWD and a range extending sensor.
It's cheap and I could literally throw it into the sun and not care much (the guns are about all I'd care about either way). I named her Primary Fodder.
I've flown her once to test her. Man was that dull. She's effective and well designed for her role, but honestly - *Yawn*.

I think I'm repeating what's already been said, but I'll try to put it in a different perspective.
There's two options you have right now, two point five actually.
Firstly (and the half point) - Train a long skill and use Eve as a chat programme. Stay docked and tell your corp mates unless it's really important I'm not undocking because I'm too bored to actually undock right now. Or of course set other skills training that you might have missed - that may require an excursion (or jump clone) to empire.
The alternative is to talk to your corp mates/CEO & directors and try to come up with a medium to long term plan that you can partake in and will actually interest you. It depends what you want to do and if you're willing to spend ISK and time getting it done with everyone else.
If a corp member is bored it could mean that the corp is offering nothing new in the way of enjoyment. It's not easy to come up with things for all corp members to enjoy so perhaps you just need a change in general for about a week or so and then you'll realise that your current corp/alliance isn't that bad after all and they really miss you and will welcome you back.
All in all - mix things up a bit, Check out different regions if you can, but personally I reckon you're at the stage where most people get to and the only course of action is to not play Eve for a few weeks. Keep reading the forums and the website and then you'll come back with a vengeance.
Have fun.
