Under wine, not seeing those issues.

I have no issues whatsoever either with the official client or with Wine (except for wine crashing on taskswitch, but that's old).
Balance is important, but you will always adapt to changing circumstances and you don't whine about stuff you can't change. |

I'm not much of a techie, so can probably not help much. Is there anything else you've done besides upgrading EVE?
If not, bugreport it and provide as much info as humanly possible. (system setup, OS, memory, desktop environment and so on and so forth)

I have excatly the same problem, the user interfaces' response time is intollerable slow up to several seconds after upgrading to QR => ergo game's unplayable (=> not producing income for CCP ).
This effects both wine and official linux client installation - in any stages of the game (including login and character generation).
I am currently running an up-to-date Arch-Linux (i686) installation. Nvidia driver version (nvidia-settings): 96.43.07
I have absolutely not insights how to solve this problem.

Really strange I must say. Nothing on my end changed one bit neither in the official client nor in Wine. I was going to suggest graphic driver issues, but then you mentioned changing drivers and it not helping.
Anyone else have any ideas for solutions? I'm running dry here? :( |

I think QR has performance issues that are most obvious on lower-end systems (and large fleet battles), and the best solution is probably upgrading hardware or hoping it gets better in the next patch. |

I tried EVE Linux with 8.10 and the 177 drivers, was fine until I activated my mining lasers, then it became a PowerPoint Present on a 486 running Vista. So, I aborted the op and docked, will reinstall the 173 drivers later and see.
There was also some issues with text displaying outside their windows in EVE.
P4 3.0Ghz 7600GT will be 2Gb of RAM later today, that might help.
I never had these, or any, issues under 8.04 and the 173 drivers.

Re-tested the official client with a clean install on ubuntu 8.10 amd dual core 3800 x2 nvidia 8800gts (640meg ram) nforce4 moboard 4 gig ram.
Its frame rate, with default settings OR with the settings stuff I did in the sticky are........crap. For comparison, eve premium + wine 1.1.8 gets an average (in space) of 28-40 fps. Averages with the official client now are 16-25fps under duplicate conditions.
Now mind you this is eve PREMIUM gfx vs. official 'classic'. The differences hold up though when using the windows client with wine using classic.
All is not perfect on the wine side of the house right now either though. There seems to be a slowdown and some odd hitching as well as disappearing gfx and wine errors that weren't there prior to the QR release.
Lastly, based on the fanfest talks and news posted by a few in this and the mac forum, we should have a public beta of a new official premium client sooner than later.
For now though, there are, shall we say, issues.
Lastly, I tested eve premium + xp sp3 and all is not perfect there either. Well smoother with 10-20% higher fps, there is also noticeable hitching and gfx glitches happening occasionally as well. This leads me to believe/conclude that the performance issues are directly related to the QR release and not cedega/wine or cider emulation causing the problems.
Seeing very similar stuff happening under native XP dx9c while not as noticeable or as problematic indicates that we will probably be seeing a performance patch to the patch sooner zen later.
(And seeing the news about needing fleet fight testers on the main page as well as ingame news smells suspiciously like CCP is more than aware of the performance issues going on with the client post QR.)

--- Edit: Only the user interface (widgets, etc.) seems to be affected. Rotating around the ship goes flawlessly - the response times to these user generated events are normal. At this point i'll have to exclude any graphics-driver related issues (in addition see driver-notes below). I point to some issues with the UI-Event-Handling which goes terribly wrong (resonse-times, or just ignored, ...) under certain circumstances/conditions.
exactly... only ubterface is affected.. different nvidia drivers didnt solve the problem... maybe is a wine setting wrong...??

See the patch notes for tomorrow's patch o' the patch. (jeez my last post here seems prophetic, no? )
patch notes:
Build 69477 to 70124 addresses Patch Notes for Quantum Rise 1.0.1
Critical
* Fixed an error that would occasionally cause a ship to disappear after jumping through a gate. This error would also cause client delays in loading up the space scene and models after the jump. * Fixed performance issues that would occur when loading a scene when running 2 or more clients at the same time, such as when docking. * Fixed a performance issue that would cause client slowdown after 30-45 minutes of playing. * Fixed a memory leak issue when ships appear on screen. * Fixed an issue that could occasionally result in a crash when switching effects on and off while in battle. * Fixed a memory leak that would occur when loading a large number of models. * Fixed an issue that could cause a crash when entering warp.
Most of the sillyness I'm seeing on the wine + premium client is EXACTLY that stuff listed. Under classic as well when I tested it.

Yep. I can confirm 100%. It seems like a snapshot of my performance tribulations since EA.
...And the added inconvenience of not being able to run it without some sort of CPU load applied to the rig while the client starts... |

Actually I've only seen the "load/not load" issue a couple times. I almost ALWAYS have cpu intensive stuff running in the background (vuze torrents, firefox, pidgin, compiz, vlc, etc.) so that may be why I'm not seeing the start failing very much. (perhaps 1 in 15 starts.) I DO have to kill exefile.exe from system monitor when it fails though as it orphans.

I'm having the same performance issues. After the recent patch the game now runs much slower. Prior to the patch it ran smooth at a good frame rate. I'm also using the nvidia drivers and switching doesn't seem to help.

I saw some similar behavior post patch with wine, but some twiddling seemed to have fixed it for me.
The biggest deal was to set the cache as high as you can safely (for your rig) make it. On mine I had set it "low", but changing it to 'high' seemed to clear up the issue. (jerky fps, freezes, etc.)
The fps is still not as high as it used to be, but at least on my rig its more "stable" now. Plus the disappearing stuff and 40 minute slowdowns have disappeared.
On the classic supported linux client, the fps is still low, but it to settled out. The text scrolling bugs and overview sillyness still persist badly though. (enough to make it NOT a viable choice for me to use day to day.) ---prayin' for that beta to get released sooner n' later.

I have completely reinstalled my operationg-system (before patch) to get a clinical base for testing:
Arch Linux (New Build 2008.06, i686) Base-Packages
Packages, Groups necessary to run Eve: + Xorg, nvidia (driver package), XFCE4, Alsa + Python 2.6, dbus-python, pygtk, glade + fonts
Finally EVE (with cedega and wine - actually running wine now).
The response-times are normal (before, and after the patch).
Maybe some dependency-collisions... I wasn't able to reproduce the problem until now.
Changes I've noticed after setup the system: + OS now boots and runs flawless WITHOUT the kernel-parameters acpi=off noapic NEEDUSB + fstab now uses UUIDs
Greetings...

Reinstallation of the entire System should be an easy task. One of the major advantages of Linux (and Windows, too - if propperly installed and configured). Just keep the partition where you've mountet /home and /etc, too. Mostly you'd like to save the /etc-folder if you made some system-wide settings there. It belongs to the /-partition in most cases.
After that, do a reinstall (formating the partitions attached to /usr, /tmp, and so on .. EXCLUDING /home and the saved /etc-folder.
In worst case you've installed everything to one single partition (I don't know if Ubuntu-installer still provides this option). If so, it's probalbly the best sollution to redesign your entire harddisk/-partition-layout.
As mentioned before, with a minimalistic clean setup will be the best option for "clinical" tests.
(My game still runs flawlessly...)
