Hi guys.
In the years I have had EVE-Profit, https://eve-profit.com/, I have several times been asked to make it available for local hosting by the players themself. Previously I have rejected that as it is way too troublesome for me to support that method and I don't want to do it, if it cannot be done "proper" + I don't like to have people poking in the security mechanishms on the site as they may find a way in).
As my interest in EVE has been minimized over the last year, and I seem not to be able to find motivation to develop new cool features to the page I am currently thinking of two methods:
1) Make it open source so people can host it themself - with a brief explanation on how to install it but otherwise it is as-is and not much support will be given.
2) Donate it to another player who will continue the development - this meaning taking over the database (dump), the 4 domains (eve-trader.com, eve-profit.com, evetrader.com, eveprofit.com) and the source code (PHP).
I would prefer option 2, but as this requires a level of trust in the receiver, I am a little worried how the current users will react on it. The users coukld though then just delete their accounts before handing over, if they don't trust the new host. Maybe (very likely) no one even wants to take over the project so maybe option 1 is the viable solution to go with?
Anyway - if you have any suggestions, then let me know.
BTW: This is coming up now as two of the four domain names now must be renewed (the eve-profit ones) - and I don't want to renew them, so either they are being handed over for free or expired. I could still use the eve-trader domains (as they have been bought for several years back then) and keep the site running for a while but preferably I would like to terminate the project in a good way.
This is one of the sad things of EVE - people make something other people can use but if they are not any longer motivated for EVE, their projects are terminated. Didn't it also happen for EVE Commander or am I wrong? Making it open source could at least keep the project alive if anyone wanted it but I expect people rather would like to create their own stuff instead of taking over another ones project.

If you're looking for a developer to take this over, I'm open to talking - I'm the guy behind Bitter Sea Trading ( http://app.bitterseatrading.com/register ) amongst other things. In terms of what I do for my day job, I work for Amazon. o/ |

It sucks to see you're leaving. I use every profit on a regular basis. I was actually hoping your next post would've been about how you wanted to make an android app for it. Anywho I support option 2 as well. Maybe hand it over to another popular site that people trust such as eve-tools, or maybe see if chribba wants to support it :p anyways I hope the project lives on... Or at least stays semi functional in your absence. |

I'd be happy just to get your program to run... The thing looks promising but it constantly says LOADING on my screen. |

Have you reported this as a bug? We've currently got a little over 350 active users since launching last month. The most common cause for it bugging out on loading is you passed an invalid API key.
What username did you sign up with? I'll check the errors log to see why your account is failing. |

I actually just tried it again from my phone and it worked. Back on topic though. I do think Bitter Sea Trading would be a good decision to pass this project to. They could at least implement some of your code to further develop their own website like including full breakdowns of profit/loss per day (my favorite feature BTW) along with excellent breakdown of profit/loss per item.

Myself I would push it as an open source project.
If someone uses it to make a commonly used service, so be it. If someone uses it just for himself and/or friends, so be it.
The best thing about having it go open source is, like you alluded to, the continuation of the effort. Far better legacy then just being remembered as one of those things that used to be. |

And on the flip side, the issue with open source is that you more often than not - get shoddy work and commits done. Beyond that, if it is open sourced, people might ignore it hoping that someone else will take care of it. There are arguments for and against open source, I do not see Eve having a development base big enough to open source everything to rely on continued development.
Open source the code base regardless, but give it to someone else as well to maintain as it currently is. |

I am currently considering donating it to you plus making it open source after a month or so. This would give you some time to check if you are happy with the security on the page and maybe change it if you don't like it (itn should be okay but I cannot guarantee anything).
I don't care if you want to charge ISK for the service - but I don't like any advertisements on the page so this would be more or less my only requirement for anyone to take over the domains (plus of course don't share the database information to anyone at all!).

I personally think the best route will be option 1. If the new owner honestly doesn't want to maintain and keep up with hosting the whole thing could go down the drain very quickly. If it's open source at least people can try and host it themselves and know that their information isn't being snooped into by a new, possibly malicious, owner. |

I have arranged to handover the project to Kouryusei plus making it open source.
More info will follow once we progress but no user data will be handed over just yet. I expect to hand over the full database with email addresses and API keys within a couple of weeks so if someone don't want that to happen then please delete the account as soon as possible and await a source package to become available.

Am I the only one who's concerned that the person getting this handed over to is only just returning to EVE not even a month ago? Linkage. They even say the may owe people isk, which means they had debt and left the game for some time.
I have gone ahead and removed my API data because I will not trust it in the hands of someone who's only returned to EVE less than a month ago and has already demonstrated they could take a long break from eve due to real life issues. |

If anyone is still owed ISK, please let me know (since as far as I am aware, I haven't missed anyone). A public post was made fairly recently outlining what happens, and the steps taken to make amends. I returned to the game after a fairly lengthy hiatus following the birth of my son.
If you do not trust your data with me, that's your decision - the tool I've developed (Bitter Sea) already has quite a lot of users placing trust in it. |

Nemo, it seems like we're going with both. I'll run the original domain and hosted variant, and the project will also be open sourced :-). |

Kouryusei, you need to step up if you want to take over this project as per 1st of May - I have written a couple of emails to you which I have not received any answers to?
If I don't hear from you today I will continue to run the project on my server as-is until it breaks down (API changes). The two eve-profit domains will expire at 25th May after which the eve-trader domains will be the only ones active.
The source code will be available as per the 1st of May at this address: http://eve-trader.com/

So all - it has come to an end for me with this project but I am happy to see it is prolonged in life by Kouryusei. Thanks a lot for this. I hope the users will still continue using the site as it has given me many many hours of enjoyment to follow my trading progress.
Currently I have handed over everything and we just awaits the DNS to propagate.
I have uploaded the PHP source code for the project here, http://www.myupload.dk/showfile/1sffP5cg5. The database structure is here, http://www.myupload.dk/showfile/1JEaAc0n8.Please feel free to download it and start using it yourself.
Actually I failed providing any installing HOWTO's but anyone who consider installing this should already know it:
1) It uses PHP and MySQL. 2) Unpack the two files 3) Setup the httpd.conf file 4) Import the database definition 5) Delete the trans_raw_1 table (!) Otherwise it will fail to create new users
I guess this should be it - otherwise ask here and I will try and answer it.
Happy ISK'ing :-) And again... thanks a lot to Kouryusei for taking over this project! I am happy to see it didn't die completely.
