One of the things that makes EVE a compelling, unique game is the ability for players to experience amazing stories. Some of the best EVE stories involve a lot of patience and complexity. Here's one I want to highlight in response to CCP Greyscale's statement at fanfest that "nobody uses kill rights". While this might be nearly true in a statistical sense, I want to make the point that the times they ARE used can be great stories involving revenge, patience and timing.
Take a look at this kill:
http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=11654059
Rapier dies, and a scimitar decides to ***** in with his ***** gun.
Twenty five days later, the victim is there when that scimitar pilot is now moving his Rhea, and hilarity ensues:

Some of EVE's trailers play up this type of patient revenge, yet you want to cut away one of the best structured methods for revenge?
Instead of trying to take the scythe and cut away player-to-player aggression, please consider the rewarding, cerebral gameplay that comes from managing that graph of aggro and pulling off great stuff. I highlight kill rights here, but I invite players to share in this thread stories of times where skillful aggro management has resulted in memorable engagements.
CCP Greyscale, CCP Masterplan: refactoring and modularizing the code is a laudable goal, but when that is done and the code is less of a mud ball, please reconsider your desire to remove player-to-player relationships. It enables some of the best and challenging gameplay in EVE... reducing it to a simple, blunt suspect flag will remove this excitement and turn it into the same old blob warfare found everywhere else in EVE. Please refactor first and then revisit your desire to cut it away for implementation reasons alone. It's some of the best of EVE. |

I didn't say anything was wrong with blobs; I did imply that variety is good for the game. |

Yes I agree patient revenge is good but why did you make a derogatory comment about blobs? Things are only impossible until they are not. |

I've successfully used kill rights before as well, but my victory was hollow as I caught my aggressor in a cheap, empty ship. Please support: export of settings in editable format

Do you just go from thread to thread calling everyone pubbie filth? You need a novelty character for that. Here's a story. Whether it's cool or not, bro, is up to you.
At the risk of sounding elitist, I'll go out on a limb here and say that aggression mechanics (in highsec at least) is a true Thinking Man's game. Many times, things that start out as 1v1's between frigates ball into larger slugfests which require attention and a bit of psychology in order to gain an upper hand, often with overwhelming or unknown odds. What many people write off as trickery or mindgames and even just plain old station gaming are really just displays of one exercising a solid grasp on How Aggro Works.
So, about that story.
When I was a nubbin (and arguably, I still am) I was involved in a series of wardecs. One particular group my corp dec'd was a no-show up until quite literally the 11th hour of the dec closing out, when I came across a WT caracal making its way down a pipe. After killing it, the hornet's nest was stirred and I was quickly hemmed into a station in the last hour of the dec by 5 WT ships, varying from a few HACs of various kinds, two Drakes, a Cane or two and a inty. All I had was my T1-gunned cane. What to do?
Two other corpmates came in and docked with me, and we discussed how we could get some kills, as by this point there were 15 scant minutes left on the dec and all we had were my cane, a drake, and I think it was a arbitrator. As time to the dec ending ticked down, a few of the WT ships including the HACs and inty had pulled range off the station, leaving a drake and cane right on the undock. So we made a plan.
With 5 minutes to go, the three of us undocked and 1 by 1 let the cane and drake shoot us, where we'd then redock. At this point, the other WTs who had pulled range had now plastered themselves up on the undock with the drake and cane, but me and my two cohorts now had aggro timers against just the drake and cane. The wardec officially came to a close, and so we all undocked and went for this drake and cane, killing both while their other corpmates (and overwhelming DPS) looked on helplessly.
Accused of hacking and other crap, I think their CEO filed a petition on us which I presume was laughed at by a GM. In the end, this is a pretty basic example of something a little more advanced than can flipping or station 1v1s, but is a scenario that's often outside the understanding of your typical player. To them, it's trickery or hacks. I guess to a person unwilling to fully understand something, that's the logical default conclusion.
I'm sure there's plenty of more harrowing examples out there. I'm sure the Suddenly Ninjas guys have some good tales when it comes to Aggro Management. Dumbing down things to the level proposed in Crimwatch 2.0 basically gives in to the knuckledraggers who refuse to understand aggression mechanics as they are and would rather want outcomes delivered to them on a silver platter instead of actually working and planning for the outcome they desire. |
