This actually sounds like an interesting MMORPG. Which is to say, it sounds like EVE in another setting. -

I been reading and watching the gameplay video, and tbh if they deliver what they promise and they don't screw it up in implementation/balance/quality/other terms, I could see myself dropping EVE for this. |

What does this add to the discussion? Do you think we need your guidance?

The group I was in were stating that only corps/guilds with a certain amount of memebrs EDIT: (To complete the sentence) were allowed to enter into beta. Has this been changed to single entry open beta or are you part of a group?
Slade
Single sign up is still available (unless that has changed since yesterday), and they will take whoever they need. Chances of getting in may be higher atm if you are in a group. |

Originally by: Patch86 I never try a game at start up (let them at least try to get the lumps out first)
But that's all part of the experience. A MMOG being born, like a baby emerging into the world, covered in blood and wailing miserably.
And, in years to come, you can tell the noobs how you were there when dwarves could fit dual-MWDs... or something.

Numerous people (well, trolls) believe these to be fake. If not, they are certainly cherry picked, even the negative ones. -

Originally by: Nuyan Zahedi It seems Adventurine is ending up as a 'second CCP', an unknown independent game-developer making a revolutionary MMO. I'm pretty psyched about this now.
This. Though I don't know about revolutionary, most of the significant aspects are also in EVE. It's amazing actually how many people on their forum have never heard of EVE, or at least know nothing about it, and are hailing this as the return of UO style MMOGs. As far as I can tell, it doesn't even have an equivalent of 0.0, just lots of lowsec. Ah well.
Originally by: ouroboros trading now mmos are packed at the starts with nerd-raging men who all want to be a 'vet' or 'beta player'
Oh, can't imagine that as a motivation. Nope. Not me. Never. Heh. Heh.
Having taken a closer look over the last ... however long it has been, and having posted in the forums a bit, I don't think this will match EVE overall, but may better it in some specific aspects. What interests me personally is the PvP. FPS style gameplay inside an EVE-style world... interesting. If it delivers what it promises, it will certainly be a viable second sandbox MMOG, which is nice.
Anyway, there has been some movement, the beta signup button has been made more prominent on the home page, prompting speculation that they are moving onto the next stage of beta testing. -

The NDA is being dropped for a day for two members of Italy's biggest MMORPG community. Movements towards a December release appear to be continuing, and we may see real info this evening or tomorrow.
Or, it could all be lies.

Anyone concerned about Darkfall's ability to live up to the promises should look over the development history. In many ways they are reminiscent of CCP.
They have been working on this for a long time, and are being phenomenally secretive about it. They are dedicated to realising their vision, going so far as to promise to not give a launch date until they are absolutely certain they can make it, as the launch date is 'a guarantee, not a goal' or some such, and taking as long as they need up until that point.
Darkfall has been feature complete for over six months IIRC, they've just been testing it this whole time, to make sure that it is perfect upon release. Unlike the usual mishmash of missed deadlines, cut features, and horrendous bugs/balance that normally accompany MMOG launches, they are trying to get a complete and fully functional game out on day one, and have taken as much time as is necessary to achieve that. Even now they are maintaining incredibly tight NDAs so that the only features people can be sure about are the ones previously promised, and the ones they see on launch day - no false impressions, good or bad, being given by the beta.
There is massive debate over whether it will be out by the end of the year. They stated the release will be this year, and as I pointed out they have previously talked about how their launch date is not just a goal but a promise. Given their unusual approach I think it might become reality, whereas if it was a normal company with a normal development process, I wouldn't have given it a second look, given how quiet they have been.
I think one of two things will happen: Either they really can deliver everything they promised, and sometime before the end of the year we will have a game that could potentially come close to EVE (though certain points will stop it from completely matching EVE) in scope, ready to play practically perfectly on day one. Or, we will sail past the end of the year with no release, showing that all their talk about the launch date was just that - talk. In this case we can probably ignore all of their exceptional promises, which basically makes up the entirety of the game, and go about our lives as before until we hear about its unexceptional failure a few months later.
I do not think we will see a middling game appear from this - they have either pulled it off or they haven't, and we will know very soon.
As regards sharding, I normally wouldn't give an MMOG with sharding a second look, but in this case, the game is set up in a way which favours it somewhat. Unlike EVE's 0.0 structure, which was basically empty space that the players built up into empires, the capturable areas in Darkfall are a number of predefined cities - somewhat like a giant board game. While the players involved will differ, I think the physical world will be virtually homogenous across all the servers once all the cities are built up. Due to this, each server could physically only support a certain number of people in the game world before becoming overcrowded, unlike EVE, which is not only easily expanded, but also has less of a concept of overcrowding, since it is in space. So, consider it less like EVE's attempt to build a virtual world, and more like a giant board game with politics, with multiple games being played at once. -

Edited by: Crumplecorn on 05/12/2008 16:51:17 Athens, Greece û December 5th, 2008 - Audio Visual Enterprises SA and Aventurine SA in a joint statement today announced that their highly anticipated MMORPG title Darkfall Online will launch across Europe on January 22nd, 2009.
BTW, I mentioned above that hope should be abandoned if they don't make 2008 - that was predicated on nothing happening. As far as I'm concerned, going as far as announcing an official launch date, even a slightly delayed one, this far ahead of the supposed deadline (31st Dec) counts. -

Well at least they announced it early. It was around now people were expecting something would finally happen. And it did. They could have not bothered, or waited until the end of December. -

Probably it will be very limited, only a handful of good friends, so don't worry, no competence ;).
Looking forward to find a common goal ingame for us all to work together.

I was thinking alfar due to being able to kill more people freely that way, but if I go with the mirdain I'll be able to play the same race in Darkfall and EVE.
All this '3 friendly races' crap sounds like it is for the carebears though. -

But look at it from the other side. On signup you are asked:
Click 'A' if you would like to be able to attack 5/6ths of the population freely, at the cost of them all being able to attack you too.
Click 'B' if you are ok with only being able to attack 1/2, so you can have more friendly/neutral characters around you.
Of course the population won't split evenly as you say, but you get the idea, there's the PvP option and the carebear option (and the middle option which I left out). -
