I would imagine a pirate mothership would likely be a big yaght if it was towing two speed boats, hardly a challenge to a vessel built for war of any size.

Killmall apparently didn't get generated. The thing was on fire and part of it blew up and they couldn't figure out if it sank or not?
I've heard the motherships being described as large converted fishing boats by news agencies.

What constitutes a fishing boat? Are we talking something as big as you might see on Deadliest Catch or a floating processing facility? -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

A "fishing boat" can be anything from a rowboat to a massive modern trawler.
I'd imagine that a bunch of pirates would have something in between.

Edited by: Khemul Zula on 19/11/2008 17:12:19 Yeah, news isn't all that great on details (or "facts"). They have just been refering to the mother ships as fishing boats.
Found this article that shows some pictures of suspected mother ships, but thats the closest I've found to identifying what one is. Linkage |

According to the BBC, these pirates weren't too smart:
Quote: When it demanded the vessel stop for investigation, the pirate ship responded by threatening to "blow up the naval warship if it closed on her", the statement said.
Pirates then fired on the Tabar, and the Indians say they retaliated and that there was an explosion on the pirate vessel, which sank.

looks like sea fairing has gotten very interesting lately. I await the day pirates start mounting the same weapons those battleships got while governments do nothing about it, or worse, hijack a true Battleship and use it as their mothership.

Who the heck is stupid enough to attack a warship? It's just too unreal. What is more likely:
- it was a deliberate provocation and the ppl pulling the strings want India involved - it was a staged attack to scare off pirates - it was a staged attack to build tension and draw more attention to the problem - the indian guys were a bit too trigger happy (I love you guys) and simply covered it up.
The last one feels the most believable. I mean when a commissioned warship captain says his ship was attacked who the HECK would believe the pirates? - OMG, we got attacked by nasty good guys believe us pls! We swear they fired first
The last scenario - the pirates being the initiators of the fire exchange - would either mean that everyone aboard were flying high on some local drug or they were complete idiots. I mean if you passively evade boarding attempts you aren't likely to get fired upon. I could be wrong here but I simply don't believe that a warship would simply fire on a passive contact (unless we count the trigger happy variation).
Anyways, if the ship wasn't under direct control of the owner then someone must be having a hard time explaining the events to a very angry kingpin. I wouldn't want to be in his place that's for sure.

Not very likely, there are only a handful of real Battleships on the planet that are still considered seaworthy, let alone capable of firing their guns. As for their chances of capturing a naval warship (regardless of class) their chances would be rather slim. I think it's safe to assume a navy crew knows how to deal with a hostile boarding action.
If they did manage to get hold of one, I'd only be really worried if they managed to get hold of an Aegis Cruiser, giving them massive range and firepower. (providing they get the ships Cruise Missiles working that is)

Profit motivation makes it piracy. The pirates are hardly taking a political stance on human rights by hijacking a Saudi oil tanker and ransoming it back for cash, are they?
Anyways, good for India. It's about time a nation decided to kill committed outlaws with zero regard for law and life. More pirates need to die and soon.

Generally, probably not going to happen. Aside from battleships not really existing, navy vessels have some pretty heavy duty point defense, and have some awesome early warning systems. Pirates rely on suprise, sneaking up on a vessel and boarding it before the crew realise what's happened. Not going to happen when you've got radar/sonar/visual observes on a 24 hour picket. Even if they did manage to take the boat, I'm not sure they could do it fast enough to avoid the crew scuttling the vessel, and even if all this stuff went the pirate's way, they've got two problems. Unless the pirates are trained in operating anti-missile defense, they're a couple of cruise missiles away from a long swim back to africa, and most developed nations would consider such an attempt as an act of war

The moment that happens the cruise missiles will come out.
Originally by: B0rn2KiLL Also linguistically, it's interesting to see it referred to as piracy, and not terrorism.
from wiki: Terrorism is the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion.[1] There is no internationally agreed definition of terrorism.[2][3] Most common definitions of terrorism include only those acts which are intended to create fear (terror), are perpetrated for an ideological goal (as opposed to a lone attack), and deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants.
Seeing as the pirates are only in it for the money and not using it to push a political agenda or cause fear they dont fit the loose definition of a terrorist.
On an unrelated note Im surprised that no one has tryed applying that definition to the local school bully yet, lol. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:
