Hi All
Brand spanking new Character(2 week old - Gallente Special Forces)-Ive been reading a lot on skill training and im in the process of training my learning skills, what certificates are good goals for a brand new character?
Most of the basic are dead easy to get, the hardest being Core Competency, is everything in that certificate worth pursuing, or should I be looking at training something else frist?
Im mainly PVE, but want to forray into PVP...thanks! |

Tbh most of the certificates are utter crap and have skills on them that you'll never use. Targeting past 3 or 4 and Multitasking especially, and shield skills on armor tanking certificates... |

Edited by: Firkragg on 20/11/2008 16:31:34 Certificates are still new and will doubtlessly under go some tweaking since the skills on them are a bit odd in places. ATM its hard to say which ones i recommend and which ones you need not worry about. Ill give you some of the basics you should aim for.
Ok im guessing you wanna stick with gal ships. The best pve gal ships are usually the drone ones. I recommend you train armour repair (try and be able to use t2 armor repairers) and train for the active hardners (the 50% ones)
You will also wanna train some cap skills and of course some drone skills (drones 5 is the main one and then once you get that drone interfacing is awesome)
Now for missioning dont be afraid to rush for a cruiser. Since they are pretty cheap and they will walk throguh all level 1s and 2s easily even with low skills.
Convo me in game if you want any more tips. |

This thread has a lot of good suggestions. Don't listen to the first response, the certs are a good way to get a good character. Increasing the amount of shields you have certainly does help you stay alive. I would suggest the Core Competency cert (covers a bunch), drones as were said above, and go for the gallente soldier certificates as a general guideline. |

Edited by: Kyra Felann on 20/11/2008 18:51:31 Certificates are mostly fine up to standard. Beyond that, they have some weird requirements. The core ones are good for having a good base of utility skills. |

Thanks all, good advise and the link was helpful. Im gonna focus on getting most of the core competency out of the way and tackle as many lvl1&2 missions as I can...the skills can be pretty broad and great full for the advise.

The elite targeting certificate (with muti-tasking level 3) allows for the maximum use of auto targeting systems. Those, when propperly utilized, can drastically increase the rate at which you can knock out missions when facing "swarms" of bad guys. At multi level 1 you achive maximum number of locks for most ships, including destroyers.
Every little bit helps, and I know the ability to que up targets speeds up my ability to destroy them. It can make the difference between my meager tank holding throughout the engagment, or me having to warp out under structure damage.

Targeting 4 (6 targets) is more than ample for practically any application. Anything more than that is just fluff. Learn to prioritise your targets.

Only by a tiny amount compared to what you could be getting from more armor skills. If you're armor tanking, your shield hp should be your last priority.

Edited by: Malcolm Gerhardt on 23/11/2008 06:12:48 In my Opinion, Certificates shouldn't be used as primary tool for a skill training plan
Figure out what you want, be it industrail or Pvp or whatever, Plan it through EveMon, and then use the Certificate planner to strengthen that plan. Since your new, it will help point out skills.
Edit: Contractions are important

It's pretty much to point out skills that are useful. Don't just say "Oh, it says to be good at X I need Y skill" and buy it and train it. Read up on the skills and figure out what they do. If one doesn't seem useful to what you want to do, don't train it.
Certs are a great way to find skills that will be useful in certain areas. They are NO substitute for proper planning and knowledge, however.

LOl at all the noobs re: targeting - multitasking is useless? dont need more than 6 targets a time?
Well wouldnt you all make utterly rubbish logistics pilots....
Lol, only locking half a squad in your scimitar or gaurdian or whichever you decide on...
The ability to lock onto at least 9 targets means you can cover your entire team....

Certifiates are interesting, but they are currently too new, and the skillrequirements are a little.. odd.
A good advice? Dont go for certificates! Go for what skills you need, and for now ignore what the certificates say! After all, its the skills you need! Not the sertificates as such!
And welcome to EVE!

Certs will be good when fixed in about 2 years.
Mind you, it's not an important fix, so it may get looked at earlier.

all those ppl complaining about multitaasking 3, it only takes 8 hours from targeting V. and if u dont have targeting V, then LOL.
to erastus, the core competency cert fields eg core integrity etc, they seem well designed to me, those are great to work on, as are the tanking certificates..... and if u use drones, they present a nice path for u too when it comes to developing ur drone skills... eg getting racial drones, eg amarr drone specialisation to 2 etc, the certificates for that are useful too, as tehy show the path to t2 mediums

I like the certs. Especially since I didn't have to "do" anything to get the stack I got.
When I mission , Multi 3 allows my Golem to keep a nice bit of DPS (pre-nerf) going while also pulling in those wrecks and getting the rat droppings & salvage. I haven't run a mish since the patch. So I can't constructively comment on that.

The only certificates worth having are those which you can check off AFTER training the skills you really need. Basically, don't worry about certificates because right now most people will tell you that they're not really a good guide for useful skills. I suspect when CCP did this they focused simply on skills within a certain skill 'tree,' and less on what skills players would really need to fly certain ships with certain mods.
The best tools to determine the skills you need are battleclinic for getting good ship loadout suggestions, EFT for figuring out what skills you need to fly those loadouts, and EVEMon for planning out those skills and their pre-requisites.

"Learn to prioritis your targets" why should that not be needed with more targets locked? I like having 11 Targets locked [on Auto targeting thing becasue nothing else fits there anyway ^^] so I can monitor a lot more firnedlies+enemies at the same time without much hassle. And i missions its quite a relieve to be able to lock a few frigs to direct your drons if they do **** again without having to limit the BS/BCs I have locked to fight myself.....anyway...if youa re fine without Targeting 5+multitasking its your choice, I did well to get Multitasking to 4 as its onlly a few days after targeting 5....and multitasking 3 is 8 hours...that should be doabler for most.
Bakc to certs: The basic ones and Standart ones are ok guidelines. But when in doubt juts ask a mate ingame if a certain skill is worth training for you and your playstyle

elite core certificates are not a must, but a goal you should keep aiming. Improved certificates are quite necessary to fly efficiently any ship :)

Certs are useless unless you want to give an enemy a good idea of what you can use and which ships you use.
For dying a lot they work very well.

once you start shooting down ships faster then you can target them, and at the same time want to have different targets for your guns and your drones, 6 targets won't get you anywhere. when i start salvaging even the 10 targets on my marauder are not enough...
