Rokh and Apoc. Thread over. Raven can also hit at extreme range but people are averse to waiting for missiles to hit.

Look for the 1400mm thread. In there you will find out that this has been discussed to exhastion already. The only thing that matters in fleet battles are EHP and DPS. All battleships can reach 150 km and that is what matter.
Liang made a nice simulation program to test those battles and there was no Battleship that could even get near the Apocalypse performance. The last changes made lasers even better, because everythign is slower, so Apocalypses are even better still now.
If you are talking about low sec gate camps, though, the minmatar battleships are decend, as long as you can have at least 3-4 of them. Or else you won't alpha anything. Camping low sec gates is the only thing they are good for tbh.

from the research i have done the maelstrom has the maelstrom has the highest alpha with 8 1400mm and it hits from a 250km range. the rokh can get to 250km much easier than the maelstrom but it does not have as much dps or alpha for that matter. and the apoc cant even get to that lock range with out more than 2 sb's ------------------------------------------------

That's common knowledge really. Sorry to burst your bubble.

You mean 'People are averse to firing expensive cruise missiles that won't do a god damned thing'? 'Cause if you do, you're right.
Rokh is the dedicated sniper. The Apoc is more of a 'sharpshooter'.
Then there's also the Eagle, for all those who like shooting frigs only.

I guess it does, yeah. If you want an easy pluck though, you should go with another ship, and recommend that he fit at least a few named things...

The Rokh for hybrids (though I suppose either a Mega or Hyp could do justice with them)
The Apocalypse for Lasers
The Maelstrom for projectiles.

idk i def would have to say that the maelstrom is the best sniper of all 4 race's just because it has the highest alpha (damage from all guns in a single shot) and the longest range ------------------------------------------------

Originally by: kelisin I am stupid can someone explain what exactly a alpha strike is?
A term from old pen/paper wargames which refers to firing all weapons at once to break through a tank threshold on the target (penetrating a single sheild facing and into the target's reactor/engines in Starfleet Battles, blowing through the armor on a single body part in Battletech, etc). A high alpha strike, used properly, trades damage over time for the ability to instantly cripple a target before it can return fire, and prevents the target from turning to present un-damaged armor/shield facings to each shot.
Alpha strike is not relevant in EVE, for two reasons:
1) Tank is far greater than damage. While there used to be an advantage to a high-damage, low ROF weapon in EVE, it has been removed now that a target's HP is far, far more than you can do with any single shot. Now total damage over time is what counts, and the weapons with high 'alpha strike' in EVE have terrible damage over time thanks to their slow ROF.
2) EVE lacks both system damage and facing. There's no need to throw all your damage onto the target at once, before it can turn its damaged side away from you. Similarly, there's no ability to cripple a target's weapons before the ship itself is destroyed, removing the "shoot first or don't get to shoot at all" factor. A ship will continue to operate at 100% offensive effectiveness right up until the final blow is scored, so all that matters is the total damage done over time, not the distribution of that damage. ----------- Blaster sig removed for now, pending those "changes we've been working on all day". CCP, don't screw this up.

As for the OP's question, the two best snipers are the Apoc and Rokh. Each has their advantages and disadvantages:
Apoc:
+ highest damage + best tracking + no ammo use (for those long POS fights) + efficient skill use: pulses are awesome
- shorter range (though it still reaches the most common sniper ranges) - must accept tradeoffs between tank and range/damage
Rokh:
+ second-highest damage (50% range bonus = use higher-damage ammo at the same range) + longest range (easily hits 250km, and could hit 350km if the range cap was removed) + can easily fit both tank and range/damage
- lower damage than the Apoc - lower tracking - blasters suck
The others have only drawbacks:
Tempest: lowest damage, alpha is irrelevant after multiple HP boosts, worst tracking Maelstrom: it's a more expensive Tempest. Hillariously, the ship is actually better in every way when fitted with lasers. Megathron: lower damage than the Rokh with the same weapons, lower tank ----------- Blaster sig removed for now, pending those "changes we've been working on all day". CCP, don't screw this up.

Don't need a "die hard" sniper to tell you: Rokh.
But whatever you do, don't use a Megathron, Hyperion, Tempest, or Maelstrom.
