What exactly is an items Meta Level?
Does it affect performance, or skill requirements?

It affects your chances of picking up a snazzy result from Invention (complicated science stuff that you probably aren't doing yet), but apart from that I believe it's meaningless.
if you're not going into science in a big way, you probably don't care what meta level anything is. ________________________________________________

Edited by: Vertex Eisenstein on 22/11/2008 16:55:11 You can also use it as a quick guide to the rarity of the item and likely value when sorting through mission loot. Its quick and dirty as its not a direct measure of usefulness, but it helps at times.
Standard T1 items are meta level (ML) 1 Named items vary between ML2 and ML4 (ML4 is the best named item so might be worth a bit) T2 items are ML5 Faction/deadspace/officer mods have a higher ML, up to 36
Personally I refine everything below ML3 and sell the rest.

Meta Levels start at 0 (tech 1 item, i.e. one you can buy the BPO off the market for) and go up to level 14.
Tech II items are level 5.
Named items are generally level 1-4.
Faction and Officer items are generally level 6 and above.
IN GENERAL, the higher the meta level, the better the item, but not always - often the 'best named' (another name for level 4) will be better than tech II (which is level 5). As the meta level increases, some attributes will change - usually providing better benefits and/or lower drawbacks as the meta level rises.
Named items can be traded on the market. Faction and Officer Mods are traded by contracts, as they can't be traded on the market.

Meta level 1 is better than meta level 0. Meta level 2 is better than meta level 1. Meta level 3 is better than meta level 2. And so forth.
Meta level 4 ("best named") and Meta level 5 ("Tech 2" a.k.a. T2 - not t2 which sometimes means something else) are equally good in terms of stats, but meta level 4 usually costs a lot more, requires less skillz, and is rather easier to fit (requires less powergrid and/or CPU).

It's important to mention this is GENERALLY true, there are some exceptions. e.g. The Malkuth Cruise Launcher is often favoured because it has lower CPU fitting requirements than any of the other cruise launchers.
"Better" is relative to it's use in a given situation. Meta level is a good guide though. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.

And the Meta4 Armor plate (Rolled Tungsten) is much better than the Meta5 in every possible way other than price. ===== * Your signature file is broken. Please use an image that will display - Fallout

Check out this quick tool I built that allows one to examine meta level (among other things).
http://salaam.quadratic.net/eve-tool/
Note those things with many meta levels ( 1600mm , afterburners ) and thing with few meta levels ( Basic Capacitor Power Relay ) and what their difference are. Neat huh?
Also: I'm having trouble predicting which meta items refine well.. can someone help me out with why some meta > 1 items refine at 100% of meta 0 and some refine at 50% of meta 0? (don't look at my refine box, it's not ready yet)
