I actually own an exqueror cruiser, mostly fighting small NPC frigates while mining in 0.8 security sector. A while ago, I went to see some agents for storyline missions (level 1) but they threw me in heavy combat zone, I've lost 2 Imicus frigates this way...Would it be a good idea to go for a gallente catalyst destroyer, if so, what would be the best configuration? thanx in advance.

What mission was it and what was your ship fitted with?
All level 1 missions are do-able in a frigate, if you're having problems the problem is likely your fitting or your tactics - problems which you won't solve by getting bigger ship (the loss will only hurt more).

The mission was to intercept some serpentis moving through a system, I went there with my Imicus and 2 blaster , there was about 25 ennemy frigates who were shelling me from far away, it took only 10 hits and my Imicus was blown to pieces...

Try getting a Tristan or Incursus.
Fit them with railguns (3x for Incursus, 2x for Tristan) and if you're using the Tristan add 2 missile launcers. That has your high slots covered. As a Gallente, you'll generally fit an armour tank. Put a Small Armor Repairer in a low slot and fill the remaining low slots with a Damage Control and armor hardeners or (energized) adaptive nano membranes. In your mid slots, fit a Webifier and a Capacitor Recharger or two.
Put a light drone in your drone bay (and remember to use it during combat ).
When you get into the mission, first thing to do is to fly away and activate your damage control. Assess the situation, pick a NPC rat to kill, approach it and shoot it with all your weapons once you're within range. Start flying away again, see if you're being followed and shoot any rats which are following you (be sure to check if they're in range). Somewhere along the way, launch your drone and have it attack the target (right-clicking in the drone window should make this self-explanatory). If you're taking armour damage, use the repairer. Warp out if your armour drops too low. Rinse & Repeat.
Note that not all missions require you to kill the NPCs to achieve the objective, in those cases they might be made deliberately hard to kill everything.

Also, if you can fit it, put in an afterburner. This will permit you to get up to speed and gain separation from the rats as soon as you warp in. While moving away, you can pick/lock your targets. "Kiting" is your friend in most missions.

Edited by: Louis deGuerre on 23/11/2008 23:09:22 Or you could indeed by a destroyer, put 4 * 150mm railguns on it with tungsten ammo and blow them to merry hell from 30 km away. Just be aware that destroyers tank very badly and take longer to warp out. -------------------------------------------------- If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles - Sun Tzu |

Absolutely, I can't believe I forgot to put an AB in the setup

Which would be a problem for someone who's been losing ships in missions A destroyer can certainly be useful to do lvl 1 missions faster, but if you don't know what you're doing it's a death trap.

First off - your problem is your tactics.
Don't orbit the way Aura taught you in the training mission. Get their agro (they start blinking yellow), run away and Kite them along behind you. See the link in my sig.
You're using blasters and getting in close to do it.
For anyone from any faction flying any level one mission, fit long range weapons, a good after burner, kite the enemy and you can beat them with almost anything. I've beat much better rats with a Rookie ship fitting a single 150, a salvager, a Civilian AB and a DCU (and some drones(!!)).
The only difference is how long it's going to take you and your margin for error. Using a level III frigate like a Tristan or a destroyer like a Catalyst will make your life a lot easier. When I rat in a rookie ship - its for the challenge as you can't screw up to much and live. I don't do missions in rookie ships as ... that's just to much work.
For my Galente Characters I have in Gallente ships, I think I use a Cat with 5 150's. I use two ammo types, Iridium for range and Antimatter for punch. I start each mission with the Antimatter loaded - that way if the acceleration gate dumps me into the middle of a bunch of rats - I've got my most powerful ammo loaded. Anti-matter is good out to about 20k then it's time to switch to the Iridium which is good out to about 30k. If I come in at a distance, I have the time to change ammo to the Iridium. If I get dumped into a mess I don't have the time to change ammo to the Anti-Matter.
I like to carry an Overdrive injector as it makes me a little faster, an armor repairer and maybe a little extra plate. I may or may not have an EANM or DCU.
Generally, I don't have enough CPU and PG to fill all my medium slots so I put a Civilian Shield Booster there. I don't use that during the fight as I'm an armor tanker - but after the fight - if I've just gotten a little damage to my shields - which is often all that happens, I can boost them back to normal a lot faster then waiting for them to do it on their own. If you can fit something better there do that. Don't use a Civilian Shield Booster as a serious part of your tank. I just use it as a convenience to buff my shields up faster after the fight since I don't have the CPU or PG to put anything else there.
I'm sure there are better fits than mine. All my Gallente Characters have fairly low skill points.
Oh ... and don't forget to put a Hobgoblin in your Drone Bay. THEN ... don't forget to take him with you when you leave ...
The other thing I do - is to get two destroyers. The other destroyer has 4 tractor beams and 4 salvagers. I bookmark each zone of the mission, then turn it in and come back with my salvager destroyer.
Mostly what you will run into in Level I missions are lots of crappy rat frigates with short range weapons. Use a destroyer to kill them and you'll wipe them out pretty fast, then come back with your salvager boat and you'll salvage them pretty fast too.

I have actually run level 2's in an Incursus. It's a great ship but you need to fit it right. I usually have blasters, ab and web, armor rep and some kind of armor fitting that won't slow me down too much. Also make sure you match your drone's damage to the NPC you're fighting, check out eve-info or one of those sites for what is vulnerable to what. If you have cruisers trained up you should take a Vexor for a ride. Put some small rails on it and throw some medium scout drones in the bay. Armor tank it and that should keep you in the game for a long long time. I didn't like the destroyer at all but it does make things a little easier.

With rail guns you can mostly stay out of their range. DO NOT fit close-range weapons like blasters, you will get fried. Also, your Imicus has one thing no other T1 frigate in the game has... a 15 m3 drone bay! You should have been fielding three Hobgoblin drones. They alone could clean up most L1 missions!

Speed and distance are your friends (afterburner) when you're first starting out in L1 missions. The Imicus can definately do the job, as stated above, don't overlook the drone bay.
Use railguns, and don't use Antimatter -- go for Iridium or even longer-range ammo. It may take you longer to kill them, but you can do it from a distance where they barely scratch you.

I'll chime in to echo the advice from others:
- Never use "orbit". At worst, use "Keep at range". You're better off learning to fly manually (double-click on the starfield in the direction you want to travel)
- You can pilot the Incursus or Imicus - fit it with rail guns and light combat drones.
- Train your drone skills - Drones up to 5, then Drone Interfacing for 20% extra damage from your drones for each level!
As a new pilot, you will likely get more effective damage from your drones than your frigate guns. I used to fit my Imicus with a target painter (to get aggro) and salvaging gear, leaving the drones to do all the blowy-up stuff. I've had good results with Hobgoblin drones for most missions, switching over to Warrior drones for missions against the Angel Cartel.
The Imicus is a really nice salvage frigate, having the largest cargo bay of all the Gallente frigates. You can even use it for mining, if you are so motivated.

Thanx a lot guys !!!
Your answers are really appreciated. I've actually went successfully through this mission, killing a lot of rats, just bought a Tristan for the job with 2 x 150mm railgun and iridium charges. The final rat was a caldari cruiser...I Orbited 6000 m away and it took a while but finally got him, I guess he wasn't really well equiped since I didn't take a lot of damage.
Thanx again guys !!!

If you're not using missiles (and as a new Gallente player, you won't have much in the way of skills for them anyway), then the Incursus is a better frigate than the Tristan. Three hybrid turrets and a bit faster.

I second the advice on the Incursus. Great little ship, it is.
Also, smaller ship classes are meant to go fast(er than bigger guns can track), so dont be shy to put in an afterburner. -
