From time to time I see other Space MMOGs mentioned here and there, but I've never seen a list of the active (or in development) space themed MMOGs. So I compiled this small list. I was surprised to see how many of them are there. And while some are pretty different from the others (and Eve probably different to all the rest) it's nice to see that there's indeed some competition in the field. I believe sompetition is good for players, since it takes the best out of developers. Here you have the list, in order of appearance or development status.:
DarkSpace Developer: Palestar Status: Active (December, 2001)
EVE Online Developer: CCP Games Status: Active (May, 2003)
Star Wars Galaxies Developer: Sony Online Entertainment Status: Active (June, 2003)
Vendetta Online Developer: Guild Software Status: Active (November, 2004)
StarQuest Online Developer: Castle Thorn Software LLC Status: Active (2007)
Evochron Renegades Developer: StarWraith 3D Games LLC Status: Active (September, 2007)
Vega Strike Developer: The Vega Strike Team Status: Active (April, 2008)
Taikodom Developer: Hoplon Infotainment Status: In Development (Beta)
Jumpgate Evolution Developer: NetDevil Status: In Development (Alpha)
Black Prophecy Developer: Reakktor Media GmbH Status: In Development* (Alpha)
Star Trek Online Developer: Cryptic Studios Status: In Development (Pre-Alpha)
Infinity: The Quest for Earth Developer: Flavien Brebion Status: In Development (Pre-Alpha)
* While 10tacle Studios (Reakktor Media parent company) has declared insolvency, Reakktor has released a statement telling they are continuing their games development. ----

I loved Darkspace. It was my first MMO too, in 2002 - but some really stupid decisions by the devs made it boring.
I wouldn't get your hopes up about Infinity, mind you. There's another word quite like that you know - Forever.

I tried this out tonight, seeing as it's free to play and didn't look completely ****ty. Below a short review.
Overview The game seems to have been developed by a Portuguese game studio, and all the spoken audio in the game is thus in Portuguese. An English spoken version is said to be in the works. On screen text is mostly in English though, although there are some instances where it seems the translation is missing, such as the character stats screen (more on that in a sec). The forums they have are fully in Portuguese however. The client itself is around a 600mb download. Graphics are decent, setting everything to high quality and running in 2560x1024 didn't really slow things down at all. Once you've logged in for the first time, you get to create a character, with pretty basic visual customization options, and after that you choose your profession. You can choose between fighter, bomber, trader or scientist as far as I remember. Each option gives you slightly different starter skills.
Gameplay The game starts you out as a new guy in some space academy, located in a starter region where all you can shoot at are roids and rats. You get a basic ship with an average speed of around 85 m/s, with a cruise mode that'll take you to 500 m/s., and with one slot for a noobie gun. Flight control is mouse based, ie. the ship you pilot follows your mouse, with W and S used to speed up or to slow down. You are guided and helped by what they call an ONI, or direct neural interface. ONI gives you your first mission, which is to destroy a rat and then 'mine' a roid. Once you've completed the first 2 or 3 starter missions, the agent refers you to a new agent, located in another system that you reach by going through a jump portal, in this case to Earth orbit. Once docked at the station there and after you've talked to your new agent, you get a choice of a one of three new ships and more missions to blow stuff up.
Weapons are handled by slots. Each ship has a different slot layout and various armor/hull hitpoints. There are 3 types of slots, turret slots, launcher slots and mod slots (which can boost armor, speed etc). Gun types range between beam/projectile/hybrid guns, with various levels of the same basic type of guns. Same goes for launchers and modules.
There's a market of sorts, which seems to be NPC/player run. I haven't noticed or seen any 'crafting' options in the 2 hours I spent in there. I'm guessing that mission types are based on your profession choice during character creation. Flying around is done by selecting either waypoints, which are then marked on your overlaid overview, and heading towards said waypoint. You can of course also roam free. Traveling between locations (ie. Earth Orbit, Lunar Orbit, Venus, Jupiter etc) is done by the previously mentioned jump gates, which seem to transport you between nodes. The transition is pretty seamless. Docking is a very simple affair; you simply fly up to a station and hit 'e'. Undocking has a nice little visual sequence to it.
Character development is done by earning points for completed missions, which you can then assign to various attributes in your character sheet. Problem is, only the first 3 stats are in English, the rest are not defined yet. Luckily there's also icons for each attribute, so it's not a completely guess based assignment.
Long story short, the game feels very much like EVE, except for the way you fly and navigate your ships. They took a LOT of obvious ideas from EVE though, such as the ONI, the markets, ship fitting screens, cargo windows, looting, missions and agents (there's multiple agents per station) etc. Then again, it's free, and you can register with a throwaway email account. It's somewhat entertaining, but in my opinion no replacement for EVE.

they are even stealing the walking in stations idea! :P
oh and why again doesn't eve have an undocking sequence?
oh yeah that's right, the devs threw out the finished version becasue it got in the way of players, people don't want to watch thier ship undock.
even though, what better to replace a black screen.

I forgot, they also have clones and insurance in that Taikodom game. The insurance is a standard thing though, where you can choose when you get moved to your new clone what exactly you want to get back. If you choose to say get your ship back, it'll cost you at that point. All in all again, it's very very EVE like in the terms and ways they do things. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I've played this and it's definitely fun. It's nothing like EVE and it's very simple but the general concepts are good and it's all quite polished. However, for PvP based game they have a lot of silly restrictions and rules curtailing what you can do. The game's also tiny, less people online in the entire game than the average semi-busy system in EVE (under 100). I had a chat with the guy who made the game via email and he said they are basically stuck on development because they haven't enough income to expand the development team. When I suggested some methods by which they could generate more money, he quite rightly told me they can take absolutely no risks with their payment method because their current tiny community of subscribers is the only thing keeping the game going.
Could be good some day but right now their problem is that it's really not worth paying for.

Still nothing near epic.
The space mmog that has walking in ships while FPS in nature.
You essentially have to do things in first person. Want to install that new Tech 2 neutron blaster to your battleship? You either get robots you own and control or go do it yourself.
Have blown out capacitors from combat onboard? Send R2D2 to go fix it. Or go do it yourself.
That's for midsized-capital ships.
You then have fighters and such which are like X3-reunion which are 1 pilot who repair at stations or capital ships in dock.
If you did it for the star wars-clone wars era. You could have 2 sides. 1. You join the clone side. You are a clone trooper who can setup clones so when you die you are replaced. You train skills and such. Very similar to eve online or face of mankind. 2. You join as a droid. You essentially self-code program to gain new skills. You simply backup your knowledgebase and programming to another droid. When you die... you jump back to that droid.
You as a single droid can essentially get all the way to some of the largest ships but the largest of ships would be meant to be done by a number of people. 1 highly skilled person would be piloting the large ship maybe 10 or so would be flying fighters that were onboard that ship. Another 10 or so operating the ship, repairing things, firing guns, etc etc. ------------------------ To make a megathron from scratch, you must first invent the eve universe. |

This is the most horrible game ever :p. I didn't even make it through the tutorial before quitting and regretting wasting bandwidth downloading it. Some others that played it had some pretty offputting horror stories from it. Apparantly when you report a bug, there's a very good chance that they'll flag it as a duplicate report of one that has been in their bug report system for years but never fixed. And the developers seem to be of the opinion that as long as a convoluted workaround exists for a bug, it doesn't need fixed. When you encounter a bug, they'll tell you it's your fault for playing the game wrong :p.

I don't care if infinity game play won't be good, i will play the game to just fly around and feel SPACEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, IF the environment is good, the rest will be a bonus no matter how bad it is, and since the guy who is making it is taking his time to achieve perfection, I am happy to wait.

Well, you are lucky! Part of the Trinity revamp includes procedurally generated planets. Read here:
Originally by: Eurogamer Planet surfaces will be generated procedurally, rather than with pixellated textures, and tens of thousands of asteroids will be rendered at once. Fannar even discussed the possibility of simulating gas giants in 3D with dense particle fields, and players being able to fly realistically through planetary rings.
(Taken from this article)
So, when it comes the time to change them, they'll look really nice. The main difference is that you won't be able to land on them or enter their atmosphere, like in Infinity. But they look gorgeous, I'm sure. ----

Well, the criteria for the list was:
- MMOG (either RPG or RTS. Multiplayer games -non-massive- are not included) - Active or in development - Downloadable client (no browser games) - 3D engine (I know StarQuest looks like it was made on the past decade, but it qualifies) - Ships in space! (SWG has a spaceship part. Don't know if SW:TOR will let you pilot ships) ----

Because nobody thought of that? I mean... the idea of NOT having a body to walk around in an mmo is actually the stuff you have to come up with.
When I first installed EvE to try it out I thought I have to ...umm... do all kinds of degrading things in spacestations before I'm even able to afford my first ship. You can believe me I was quite surprised when they expected me to fly around right away.
Also, that thing didnt look safe at all. Probably shouldnt have picked minmatar

After being cancelled by EA Games back in 2001 the EnB emulator team is almost ready for an open beta.
They however do have a sneak preview of the single player out. Check it out if you were a real fan.

Damn, Evochron looks awesome but it appears to lack the MMO part of the game, unless I'm mistaken. It doesn't show any kind of online multiplayer in the MMORPG sense.
Still, Evochron is what I want in EVE tbh. Proper flight but with the MMO aspect and the complexity.
Hell, a space sim with atmospheric flight and.. omg.. A DAMNED ****PIT is well worth trying. I'm totally checking out the demo tonight.
