I heard somewhere that ships can be stolen, usually if the player is afk. So how is this done? I guess I need to be in my pod, approach the ship I want to steal, but then what?
Thank you

You can board ships if the pilot isn't in it, people sometimes 'park' ships in space and even when they log out the ships will still be there. Most of the times this will happen at a POS where the pilot deems it safe within the shield, to then find out that someone with access to that POS stole his ship.

Ho I see, so a pretty dangerous thing to do then, and also a rare thing to come across I guess.
Is there a way to check if a ship is abandoned?

If you're on the same grid as the ship (i.e. can select it from your overview), then I believe that empty ships will have the "Board ship" button enabled, while ships with pilots in will have the button disabled.
Additionally, while ships usually show up on your overview as the name of their pilot, empty ships will show their ship class instead (e.g. "Impairor"). That's usually the first thing I noticed that alerts me that a ship is empty.

I was warping my alt around the other day in a pod, looking at moons to see where I could put up a POS (high sec).
I warped in on a moon and there was nothing there but a shuttle about 5km from where I landed. The pilot name was "Gallente shuttle", so I right clicked and boarded.......not only did I find a free moon, but I got a free shuttle while I was there.
Not much, I know, but it was just there, so why not.
The only caveat really is that you need to have the skills to fly the ships you find. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.

Yes - was doing that, but two moons and one tower on a narrow scan means warping in to see which moon has the tower......I'd assumed the shuttle was at the POS and was surprised to see that it was at the free moon (and more so that it was right on the warp in point). ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? You'd be surprised.. this is actually quite common out in 0.0. Partially for convenience factors but there's also the side benefit of really screwing up directional scanning. You end up with 30 ships on your scanner with 2 neuts in local and no idea whether they're in the Thanatos, the Sleipner, or the Flycatcher (for example) until you fly and confirm those ships are empty in a recon or cov ops.

i got a CNR once doing this, but mostly all i find it shuttles and n00b vehicles. i usually take them anyway, and have tried to ransom them off once or twice, but surprisingly, no one wants to pay 5 million for a shuttle i found somewhere in space... |+ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++ +|

You can't "steal" a ship that has a pilot in it, no matter what you do.
If somebody ejects out of a ship, you can take your pod and board it though.
Usually, people leave unpiloted ships safely behind POS shields though, though they may leave them anywhere they want.
