This topic comes up every so often, and seeing as the last is months and months old, I decided it was time to educate some of our newer players.
Naturally, many of you have probably seen this option in EVE and wondered what it does or is. It is a system of head tracking that uses an infrared reflection to determine head motion for the purpose of moving your view around on the screen.
Since EVE has support for this device nativly, the device is hardly more expensive than a mid-range video card, and that it makes playing EVE so much easier and intuitive, there's little reason not to have one. I do, and I can't for the life of me determine how it was that I used to play EVE without it.
So, first, a short youtube video demonstration in case it's still not quite clear what this is or does: Linkage
...and if you want to know more or want to buy one: Linkage
And no, I don't work for Naturalpoint, I just use the thing and hope CCP keeps support in EVE forever. However, if too few use it, it might get put by the wayside someday. So we who do use it feel compelled to advertise every so often. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- PROPOSAL: Good Bug Reporting Incentives MMORPG: Many Men Online Role Playing Girls |

Looks cool, but it's a little bit expensive to replace a function I don't often find myself in need of. Most importantly, how are you supposed to tell whether this is part of my post or my signature? |

Good question, perhaps someone can make a video of it being used in EVE and therefor people can better judge if it would be worth it or not.

In station or in space, simply hold down the right mouse button and look around. It can also zoom in or out if you wish. It is not limited to the x & y movement of the mouse either.
The first time you load up the map in non-flattened mode, it's quite breathtaking. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- PROPOSAL: Good Bug Reporting Incentives MMORPG: Many Men Online Role Playing Girls |

Hmm, if WIS takes advantage of it, then it may be even more interesting.

Yes.
And as for WiS, the camera controls are the same as in space, so I'd assume the system works just as well there. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- PROPOSAL: Good Bug Reporting Incentives MMORPG: Many Men Online Role Playing Girls |

What effect if any does it have on graphic/cpu performance? Is it a resource hog?

The CPU impact is minimal. Memory use isn't anything important either. Well, I run an AthlonXP 2400 with 2GB of RAM, so for lesser PCs they might feel a bit of a pinch. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- PROPOSAL: Good Bug Reporting Incentives MMORPG: Many Men Online Role Playing Girls |

It's basically another input device. It uses about as much resources as a flight stick.
That said, it doesn't add much to EVE Online in particular, but is probably a fun thing to play with if you happen to have one. TrackIR is amazingly useful in simulators (Falcon 4.0, FSX)

I don't think so. The only reason I could find for putting off buying one is the cost, which isn't very much to begin with. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- PROPOSAL: Good Bug Reporting Incentives MMORPG: Many Men Online Role Playing Girls |

I don't really think it will worth the cost just for EVE. Me, i might buy it if it ever starts selling in Greece cause i love flight simulators. But just for eve, i dont really think it is worth. _____________________ Shelley Godfrey: Have you lost your mind!? Edited by: Ticondrius on 25/11/2008 21:25:01 You could get someone to reship it for you, but I see your point. International purchasing is always an annoyance. They do have Greece down for a shipping destination though.
It does however work with a wide variety of games, either partially or fully, but of course, few play them all. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- PROPOSAL: Good Bug Reporting Incentives MMORPG: Many Men Online Role Playing Girls |

It would definitely be cool to have a video about this being used in EvE... so, OP, can you make one? You are afterall probably the only one using it.
However, I would naturally think that you would also need some way to rotate the monitor along with your head as you use a device like that, for the best possible effect.

If we're are lucky Ambulation may map the native Track IR support to head movement of your character.

Ticondrius, is there any chance you can video yourself using it and post it on youtube so we can see what it does with Eve? Or anyone else for that matter. It looks cool in the link you've given but an Eve perspective would be nice.

If you watch the linked video, it explains that this uses motion scaling, so you can 'see' all the way behind you without turning your head very far. It's kind of like the mouse pointer precision option in Windows. The faster you move the mouse, the further the pointer goes in the same distance traveled.
EDIT: I fail. The quoted one was taking about making it 'feel' more real, and was not discussing a usability problem.
In that case, buy a 3D headset and stick this thing's headtracker clip onto it. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- PROPOSAL: Good Bug Reporting Incentives MMORPG: Many Men Online Role Playing Girls |

My friend lent me his once to try it in EVE and it was really messed up.. Can't remember but it was seriously akward, I couldn't look around as I expected and it felt totally random :P I've used it when playing racing sims so I know what it should be like.. But you also said I had to hold down left mouse button to look around?

Then I can't see the screen!

The sensitivity is quite high, so you can just look lean your head slightly :P It's also quite immersive when it works :P

Thanks Ticondrius, I've always wondered what that little check-box was for but I never bothered to look it up.
Now I'm thinking I may pick one of those up some time next year, but it'll be tough deciding between it and another EVE account I suspect!
