Quote: Took the comp home and nothing on monitor but lines and garbage.
I think this is your problem... When he removed your video card and tried to force another card in its place he may have damaged some pins inside your motherboard. That would be a worse case though. Chances are he may not have seated the card properly and all it needs is to be reseated. To check use a flashlight and look at the point where your video card is connected to your motherboard. If you see anything reflecting on one side but not the other then it is not seated properly.
Easy to fix.
1. power down system
2. You can either unplug your system or leave it pluged into the outlet. I normally leave it plugged in as I use the power supply as a grounding source. "you must ground yourself before doing any work inside the PC!" Static kills.
3. Locate your video card and unlock it from your motherboard. Older systems do not have a lockdown but newer ones do. Check to see if your card is also screwed down as well on the cable side.
4. Newer cards also have a seperate power supply connection on them as well. It shouldnt matter if you disconnect that or not unless it prevents you from having a clear view of where the video card was seated at.
5. Useing a flashlight look where the card was seated and visually inspect where it was seated to see if there was any damage done.
6. If not then replace the video card back in the computer. when placing the video card make sure you use an equal force across the card. If you dont you can get some pins making contact while others wont.
7. Also when you plug your monitor in first look at the pins and make sure none are damaged. sometimes those pins can get pushed back in the cable.

Edited by: Lazarann on 28/11/2008 21:34:30 File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau online. I knew someone who had a similar experience with Dell, filed a complaint, and got a new, free, better computer within a week. Not saying it'll definitely work, but it's worth a shot. EDIT: I've also learned, when dealing with customer service, the more irate and angry you become, but in a rational way, the farther you'll get. If you don't like the answer you get, tell them you want to talk to their supervisor. If you don't like their supervisor's answer, ask for the supervisor's supervisor, etc. Keep working your way up as far as you can get. You might also go back and demand they look at the footage from their cameras.

A couple of things.
I don't know about the laws in the U.S. but under the Data Protection Act here in the U.K. you can request a copy of any CCTV footage that is likely to have you on it and the company or government agency is legally obliged to provide it to you, on the basis that you pay a "reasonable" fee to cover the cost of the media they are storing it on, the cost of a VHS tape for example.
Also, I've been building my own PC's for over 8 years now and I recently saw this book in a shop. It looked like a great guide for building your own computer and as far as I can tell they regularly update it when new technologies become available:

I just noticed the previous book is for upgrades, repairs and maintenance. There is also one for building a computer from scratch:

Originally by: Vaximillian On 11 November I took my computer in to Best Buy for a basic RAM upgrade. (Okay those of you who say I shouldn't have gone there in the first place read on...)
The Geek Squad tech hooked up my comp, ran some diagnostics on it, and came back telling me what RAM I could upgrade to etc. He then started trying to sell me a new Gateway system saying, "as a gamer it has everything you need!" I told him repeatedly that I only wanted the simple RAM upgrade and didn't want a new system. He then opened a video card, a 9000 series nVidia and tried pushing it into the existing case and slots telling me see your case doesn't take the new cards and you need a new case. By this time I was running late for work and told him I needed to go and would bring the comp in the next day. Took the comp home and nothing on monitor but lines and garbage. Took it back and guess what. "Sir your motherboard is fried you need a new system!"
I complained to management, a useless piece of work named Melissa, and she said, "sorry can't help you because you can't prove the comp worked when you brought it in. But we'll give you a $100 gift card for your trouble." Called corp and basically same thing. This despite the fact that their surveillance footage could easily show that my comp DID work when I brought it in because the tech booted it up and it ran fine.
Bottom line folks. DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH BEST BUY! Not only do they not care about the customer but in this case the tech actively sabotaged my computer in an effort to sell me a new system I didn't want. They told me it would take $200 for new mb and labor putting it in. But they said they wouldn't even give me that. Told me their surveillance footage "jumps around" and doesn't show me at the front desk at all all so can't see if my comp works. Liars and thieves!!
Please add your comments beneath this. They won't even come up with the $200 they admit it cost to fix their damage. I want to cost them more than that in lost sales. If you are looking to buy gear and decide not to go to Best Buy because of this let me know please. I want to at least get the satisfaction of hurting them the only place they care. In the wallet!!!

See, I worked for Best Buy, for the Geek Squad specifically and I can tell you that company is TERRIBLE.
I Quit due to Best Buys Ethics violations. They wanted me to sell services and products that customers absolutely didn't need, in ways that are unethical.
Just because someone doesn't understand what your trying to sell them, doesn't mean you should just BS them into thinking they need it or the world will explode.
I'd Sue them personally but thats me.
