QUOTE: "The three APMSS-employed security guards -- all former British servicemen -- mounted "sustained non-lethal resistance" but were unable to stop the attackers seizing control of the ship, Davis said"
WHAT THE HELL?
just shoot the mother****ers, "non lethal resistance" isnt working, as we have discovered from this, and many of the 40 previous hijacking's this year

There was only 3 of them. Pirates have superior numbers. If you offer resistance, or shoot&kill any of them, you'd have to be sure to shoot&kill all of them, otherwise they will still take the ship, but they will kill members of the crew in revenge. And being able to kill all of them is simply not going to happen unless you have a platoon or two embarked, not just 3 dudes.

"Around 20,000 oil tankers, freighters and merchant vessels pass along the crucial shipping route each year. "
That seems to be the real catch.

If they had tried to shoot back, they would have had to have been certain to kill ALL of them. Otherwise, the ones who remained would execute the entire crew for "killing their buddies". ____________________

I read somewhere that merchant vessels are not allowed to carry any sort of armed guards, maybe someone could confirm this?
Also, if there is only 3 of them, even if they had guns they wouldn't of been able to do anything. There have been reports in the media of up to 25 pirates attacking a single vessel. Not to mention the pirates are getting increasingly more organized and getting better equipment with all the phat ransoms they are getting :/

Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 29/11/2008 16:00:28 Do the same thing they did last time piracy became a problem and remove their port of call from the face of the planet, preferably with everyone in it. (2-3 MOABs should do just dandy) (ok, last time was over a century ago, but they still reduced the port they used to a smoking ruin)
As for the security details on those trading ships, most of them only have a handful of crew to begin with, and those are usually not trained military personnel.

But Garowe resident Abdulkadil Mohamed says, they do not see themselves as pirates.
"Illegal fishing is the root cause of the piracy problem," he says.
"They call themselves coastguards."

Fine, but then atleast let them attack the fishing trawlers that are breaking the law by even being there rather than ransoming random cargo vessels that are just passing through.

I wonder if they will use the ransom money to buy & fit proper concord vessels to solve their illegal fishing problem
Probably not... though.

They're in the middle of the ocean and the pirates are using a speedboat. I believe one TOW rocket should do.

Correct, maritime law forbids merchant vessels or crews to carry armament. I tried to get into that line of work a few years ago, that was one of the bits of trivia that was made clear - your hands are tied. Exceptions are made for nuclear transports and military chartered vessels, but those are a comparative rarity.
Interestingly, any navy of any sovereign nation can engage pirates at will. The trade is such an anachronism that there is no universal due process for it. Sticking half a dozen helicopter carriers in the Gulf of Aden and lighting up every inflatable and go-fast would work wonders, is legal, and requires no international mandate. It just would not look civilised in these enlightened times. I think the existing hostages are the only thing preventing a free-fire policy at this point.

I personally think we should load up old freighters with high explosives, send them through saying they cost loads, then blow them up when the pirates come to reap the goods.
