Great first post in this forum. And by "great first post" I mean people who have never even posted here showing up out of no where and making broad, sweeping statements about the entirety of this board and its users is one of the big reasons I object to MD's new notoriety.
By the way, we serve a "functional purpose." Not just do we handle trillions (EBANK alone is approaching 1.5T) of ISK that's probably fairly important to the economy, we also are the source and home of the secondary market CCP seems so proud of and we ultimately help a fair number of people.
Where do you think all the new IPO's come from? They come from fairly new players that we guide through the process and ultimately invest in. We help those who help themselves and we do it a lot, sometimes without even getting anything directly out of it. What we don't do is spoon feed noobs too lazy or dumb to use eve-search to answer there own questions.
The secondary market needs new blood, not but 6 months ago we were fretting over the tiny number of new bonds. There were even accusations of stifling the secondary market being thrown around. We'd like to see a lot more of EVE getting involved in the secondary market at least through bank accounts and insured bonds. What we don't want is spill over from General Discussion and noobs wondering in looking for the new player Q & A section which is what we're getting now.

I personally love how there are so many people who hate the MD forums and think other forums are way better yet they won't leave.

I admit there is a measure of elitism in us wanting the forum returned but that does not invalidate the reasons given for moving it nor is that sense of elitism inherently wrong. Those, at least in my mind, who are considered the "elite" of this forum have that title not because they've been here since beta or earned a lot of ISK but because of what they've contributed over the years. Take Hexxx for example, can you honestly say that his work building up EBANK and the secondary market does not establish him as a cut above the average player? Does his consistently insightful posting not warrant a certain cautious respect well beyond that which one would use in response to the average poster?
You're quite right about the alt. CCP really needs to ban alt posting. SHC did it and is the better for it. CAOD would be a lot less ****ty if they did it and I'm sure MD isn't the only other forum that would benefit. But asking them to do that is like asking them to consistently refund ship losses which is to say perfectly reasonable but quite unlikely.

Naw, I guess it was more aimed at all of the new crowd that has been popping up telling us what is wrong with MD and saying we are elitists and we suck and so on.
We know we are elitists, we know what is wrong with MD and have been dealing with it for a long time. Obviously the new forum placement combined with lots of people *****ing about the new forum placement has driven up the noob count on MD (not a bad thing so long as they think before they post).
I guess my point is, there are other forums and if someone really has that huge an issue with this one I would encourage them to check out the other forums.

When I first joined MD, there was a rule:
Quote: Don't post in MD until you've read and understood how business gets done for a month.
I did it like all the other veterans in here, and am all the better for it. Back then I had about 2b to my name. Just from participating and learning from this forum, that amount is what my ammo supply is worth alone. Yes I have a lot of ammo... but hey, I'm a merc.
The thing about MD, is we also refer to it's contents and activities as a whole as the 'Secondary Market'. MD isn't just a forum, it's an institution. We are naturally extremely surly because of scammers, and the fact we put our money where our mouth is. Other forums don't even expose their mains. We put the money on the table.
MD equally is also a place where swords are left at the door. Bitter rivals and sworn enemies can get together and do business together, regardless of race, alliance or creed. You also have people who are either directly responsible or sit at the right hand of some of the most powerful people in game keeping a very beady eye here on MD.
Therefore spamming it with incessant drivel lowers MD's credibility and importance as one of the most important free trade bastions in EVE, and why we veterans are complaining that the noise volume has gone up, because it's simply eroding the credibility and importance of years of really quite amazingly insightful work.

Honestly, it seems that many of the "veteran" forum users here are the ones that need a lesson in "basic economics" or at least in "intro to business." Although Eve is your game, Eve is someone else's business. And although I hear many of you "sit at the right hand of some of the most powerful people in game," I have a feeling that Eve the business functions better by courting the 30,000 plus trial accounts they have open at any given time rather than making sure the 50 "veteran" Market Discussion players don't have to skip over some "noob" questions in a forum. I mean, let's pretend that by preventing you all from flaming new players for their questions Eve is able to convert an extra 2% of trial accounts into paid accounts. That seems like a pretty good deal for Eve.
So, if you want to have another forum for your IPOs and Bond Offerings (by the way, we call these things "Initial Offerings" or a "Primary Market," not a "Secondary Market") I think that's fair enough if it stops you all from filling the top 4 threads in MD with whining about your lost seclusion.
Really, come on. If you're worrying about "incessant drivel" that "lowers MD's credibility and importance" stop lining up threads in which everyone gets together and whines about the fact that a few times a day a new player might ask you something about the market. Heaven forbid, you might then have to read his/her question or, if you're really into it, apparently you will write multiple responses in which you bash them for their interest in the Eve Market.

Most if not all of the threads that were started to whine about the change were done by people that have little to no MD history. I'd rather not be grouped with those individuals. Also, the problem isn't with new players coming to ask questions. The problem is with the ******s that come to troll or the other group of ******s that don't feel the need to read the forum description and post accordingly. This is not where you come to sell GTC's or to advertise a service, or try and sell a character. That is the problem that I have with the forum being moved. Before it was moved we had very little of this happening and since then there has been a sharp increase.
That is MY issue with the forums being moved.

Indeed. The alt useage here is getting silly. (Much like yourself) Originally by: Samir Atall If you're worrying about "incessant drivel" that "lowers MD's credibility and importance"
Why didn't you just post this troll with your non-! troll alt? Or better yet, have the balls to post with your actual main? >shrugs< I know, that would be too much to ask. Sadly, this thread was useful for discussing the op's topic for new players but it seems that those who are trolling in defense of new players can't do it in threads better suited for it. What a bunch of losers.

Edited by: Ricdics on 01/12/2008 09:15:50 This thread is so heated.
I think of the regulars I would be in the top 10 oldest.
Frankly I just don't open the threads if the subject doesn't interest me. The only reason I just read this was because my eve-search daily search for EBANK brought me here
I see both sides of the debate but generally I just don't read it if the subject is of no interest.
edit: I really like this quote by Cheopsis:
Quote: No, the problem that people here are having is that for the longest time, they were buried in an obscure place, and happy to be that way.
CCP then chose to move a discussion forum populated almost exclusively by older highly experienced players discussing large business transactions and macroeconomic scale discussions into a place where young or totally inexperienced players wander in and ask questions of a completely different scope and scale.
In essence, imagine a 13 year old somehow finding their way into a Federal Reserve Board meeting and asking questions about his summertime lawn mowing business.
That's what the old timers here are seeing.
I think this is the ultimate analogy. Continuing on the analogy, the businessmen have written libraries and libraries of information and archived it all (stickies and eve-search.com) hence their frustration when having to answer questions that should have been dealt with by someones high school teacher (time in game, New player Q/A forum, ingame help chan, etc).
Like I said it really doesn't bother me all that much but I think the above would be the main reasoning for the regulars in general. Ironically, the dude I quoted (Cheopsis) is quite new to MD as well

This more than anything.
It can be increasingly frustrating when repeated topics over the same thing come up, time and time again and lately here in an ever increasing pace.
I hope this EveWiki thing CCP is trying to get to fruition can help alleviate some of the growing pains of being next to CnP. |

I want to play too...
I posted my first investment opportunity back on 2003.08.27 - unfortunetly that investment failed :-( However I remember that Heff of Playboy and also TornSoul of Big had similar postings prior to that.
I then posted what I (so far believe to be) the first public bond on 2004.09.16 - and that was a huge success - again it can be debated if BIG's bs bpo program (and Playboy's as well) was some sort of IPO/bond - maybe even Naga's Stepstone project. ---------------------------------------- WTB: Guardian BPO |

This.
Interesting opinion, but decisively wrong. It is the forum that was used to "it's purpose is to sell things. Bonds. Shares." but wasn't created for that and wasn't only that.
As already suggested in this thread it would be a good idea to open a forum section dedicated to the trading of bond and shares and the proposal for new IPO, but the "market discussion" forum is for all the market discussions.
BTW, some of you can start a petition for an advanced market forum in the Assembly hall forum where it belong and then getting LaVista Vista to present it to the CSM. Placing it in the MD forum show a ghetto mentality of the kind "this is our turf and we should defend it".

[offtopic] With the mineral basket in mind, the only way CCP will ever make risk-vs-reward (ugh, i feel dirty now) match in terms of a mining career in high sec vs low sec vs null sec, they need to introduce a mechanic (whether it nerfs highsec mining or not) which simply makes mining ore A in lowsec/0.0 sec more profitable than mining it in high sec. They'll never be able to make, say, Jaspet/Hedbergite more valuable than Veldspar if the mineral market says so.
I.e. Mining Veldspar is bettar than mining Jaspet. Jaspet is a low-sec only ore. Veldspar is ubiquitous. But who cares. What *should* be the case is that mining veldspar in low/0.0 sec is worth more than mining veldspar in high sec.
Whether this is by incurring tax/fees/something to make mining in high-sec more expensive, or whether it's by introducing things like blast-crystals which are illegal to use in high sec (concord response for using them even) but dramatically increase your yield (extra 50% say) and depletes asteroids inefficiently,, it'd be a win-win. More targets coming to low sec for pirates, more reward for bears going to low/0.0 sec (they're halfway there with the Blockade Runner covert ops cloak changes) [/offtopic]
I would like to see the high sec station refining efficiency reduced by 10%, and increased by same amount in 0.0. This would help improve the issue.
I would also like to see a new type of veldspar in 0.0 that delivers 100% trit per unit. And a new type of veldspar in low sec that is 50% more per unit.
