Say i want to warp in and sit there and tank everything without any worry of ever loosing the ship. What would be the best for tanking it?
I hear shield tankers are good, but doesn't really matter, i can fly either.
Basically, i want to warp in one ship, get aggro, and then warp in my other ship and gank everything.
Ideas?

first ship should be with a normal mission setup
ganker should have 3 damage mods and weapons, rest of the slots fitted with max cap power relays and cap rechargers and have 1-2 remote reps. Raven or dominix is usually best for this.

Dominix. 3 Aux Nano, 4 Hardeners 2 LAR 1 CPR 5 Cap rechargers
1100-1300 DPS perma tanked. ADDS 300-450 DPS with Drones without having to target or do Anything. (use Medium drones, easy to get t2 and skills up, and plow through all frigates/cruisers/BC's, leaving your main dmg dealer to only worry about BS's)

For raw tanking ability anything with a resistance bonus is your friend. Drake or Prophecy at BC V get +25% raw resistance. The T2 Prophecy hulls are even stronger. Fill in the resistance holes and you've got something that can shrug off amazing amounts of damage (and smaller sig = less incoming damage from BS). DPS wise they suck for their hullclass, however.
Ships with active bonuses to their repair systems such as Cyclone, Hyperion, Vargur can repair back huge amounts of damage but a general lack of mids (on Cyc/Varg) can weaken their tanks. Not sure about Hyp. They get average DPS with their tanks active, compared to the resistance-strong hulls.

So say i have one Gallente char and one Caldari char..
I have the Gallente one in the domi tanking. I suppose i would use a Raven for DPS? Would i fit torps or cruise?
I like the idea of the T2 BS's or smaller ship tanking as well. Any other suggestions?

Passive Ishtar if you want a good capless tank that you don't need to worry about, albiet you'll need some lower level faction passive shield hardners, and it works the best against stuff that dosen't do EM damage natrually.
But then a decently skilled Domi would do fine for all lvl 4s, and as a plus you can still do some good complimentary dps with sentry drones. ---

Think harder.
Best tank is an afterburner AF of the appropriate race (match T2 resists to mission damage) with remote reps from your main ship. The combination of high speed, low sig radius and high resists means the effectiveness of that remote repair is vastly increased compared to trying to tank with a battleship. Damage isn't a problem, since that's what your main ship is for. -----------

/me dawns flame proof suit uh,dunno if you considered this or not but your gank ship should have adequate tank as well considering additional enemy spawns (depending on the type of mission) will likely aggro the ganker and may wear it down a good bit before it can align and warp out.

The easiest to use would be the AFK domi.
Highs 1 aggro gun 1-2 drone link augmentors whatver
Mids 5 cap recharger 2's
Lows 2 LAR 2 4 hardeners 1 cap power relay
Rigs with low cap skills or faction LAR's 2 Aux. nano Pumps 1 CCC with High cap skills 3 Aux nano Pumps
And it can field a large variety of drones to kill stuff without you needing to do a thing.
If you don't care about it doing any damage, a hyperion (if you can make it cap stable) would work or an abaddon. Maelstrom would also work very well, especially if you have crystals. However, you would need to use deadspace equipment to make it work, either a pair of small shield boosters, or a low cap deadspace X-L. For any of those though, it adds very little to dps.

Theoretically, a golem would be the best tank. With the proper modules it could omni tank about 11k dps (8/11/13/18 em/th/ki/ex iirc), but you'd shoot for crap. And that's only eft warrioring...

I had an 11k stable tank.... I don't really call that setup a tank, if it can only hold out for 1 or 2 minutes.

if you want a ship just for tank, use a vulture. if you want a ship that will actually do something else then just tanking during the mission, get a nighthawk.

Edited by: Kneebone on 01/12/2008 23:13:56 In the "Thinking Outside the Box" category I submit to you the Rohk with a Faction based shield tank.
8x Arty's or AC's
Any Gist-Whatever X-L Booster 2x Dread Invuls 3x Navy Boost Amps
2x Gyro II's 3x Cap Flux Coil II's
1x Anti-EM Screen I's 2x Cap Control I's
All in all you are talking an omni tank of 1000+ DPS or replace one of the Invuls with a specific Hardner and go nuts. Its easily possible to crack the 2k DPS tanks and the AC/Arties give you capless DPS for a gun ship.
If you want the single best sub capital tanking ship in the game then the Damnation is your pick. Insane armor tanker with capless missle based damage.

Change the hdnrs to chelms ex and change the damage type to 100%ex and you got passive 28000dps and active 70000 for about 1 min. Lol you can take on the whole mim fleet with a setup like that.

I imagine a vulture would work very well, passive tanked. Low damage, but you said that's not an issue.
I've tanked lvl4s with nighthawk and it works nicely, and vulture tank is even stronger than nighthawk.

You can get away with "fire and forget" active tanks most of the time and in those cases a dominix, some command ships perhaps, and maybe even marauders can be very useful.
If, however, you ever have the chance of getting any blood raider missions you need to passive tank. If you aren't paying attention blood raiders can have your "tankle" (tank tackle) ship pilot's pod naked in space in less time than it takes you to realize it's happening since the fleet watch feature doesn't display capacitor levels. Yes, blood raiders use cap warfare. Their battleships and, even more dangerously, their T2 cruisers use it.
Against blood raiders you'd want a drake, nighthawk, onyx, or broadsword to hold aggro. All four can have phenominal passive tanks and the 3 T2 ships have solid bonuses to at least one of the two damage types blood raiders use.
Likewise if you want to just use a standard "omni" tank and not have to worry about more than maybe turning on a hardener the broadsword is probably a good choice overall.

[empty high slot] [empty high slot] [empty high slot] [empty high slot] [empty high slot] [empty high slot]
Core Defence Field Purger I Core Defence Field Purger I
The tank's over 1k DPS "omni" and even if the cap runs out and the invulnerability field falls, presuming you have level 5 in the compensation skills, the tank only drops to around 880 which, with care, is more than enough for any mission.
Another idea to consider is if you fly a ship like an ishtar, dominix, or typhoon for your DPS ship you can fit remote rep drones in them to assist the tank ship if it gets into trouble.
The drake, however, is your best bet for a low-cost low-SP method of doing this. The myrmidon is almost as good and if you just toss out a 2/2/1 heavy/medium/light split of drones it can eventually finish a mission all by itself, especially at battlecruiser 5. The tank on the myrmidon, when done as passive shield, is approximately 20% lower than the drake's but the myrmidon's raw DPS with 5 T2 hammerheads is approximately 20% higher. Using the 2/2/1 split gets you another 10-15% more raw DPS than just 5 mediums would.
If you want to consider a myrmidon try this approach:
[Myrmidon, Tankle] Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II
Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II Heat Dissipation Amplifier II Magnetic Scattering Amplifier II Invulnerability Field II

Core Defence Field Purger I Core Defence Field Purger I Core Defence Field Purger I
Ogre II x2 Hammerhead II x2 Hobgoblin II x1 Bouncer II x3
You can toss out drones and assign them to assist you if you want concentrated firepower on all targets or just let them roam around at will blowing up stuff. At least one gun to get aggro is needed or else you'll have to fly into detection range and, for some rats/missions, that means a 60km hike just for them to spot you 20km away.
The ship'll cap out with just the invulnerability field running but it'll takea bout 40 minutes. It'll cap out in closer to 15 with the gang mod running. If you can leach cap off of your DPS ship (which should be fine in most cases) it'll be fine and perma-run everything on it and with the drone link augments you can get the drones to assist/guard your DPS ship out to 100km max range. Also, in that configuration at max skills the myrmidon'll tank almost as well as the broadsword. Almost. ____________________

Without bonuses it'll tank at 722 at max skills. With bonuses at max it'll go up to 924. If you don't mind cap use swaping out an LSE II for an invulnerability field II will up the tank by about 100 DPS omni. If you've got max gang skills and max shield skills with BC5 it'll have an EFT omni-tank of up to 1036 DPS.
Getting the max out of it will take work for omni-tanks but for dedicated tanks it'll be a lot better and even with lower SP it'll be a pretty solid tank. The key points are 4 SPR IIs, 3 CDFP rigs, and 3 LSE IIs. After that fit hardeners/amps to suit your needs. Just beware the cap cost of active modules. It'll take half an hour for an invuln II/gang mod drake to cap out with 4 SPR IIs but that's enough time for you to forget about the ship if you're not careful.
Also, getting gang mods mounted is pretty easy and you should already be training up gang skills to at least level 3 anyways since you'll be flying a one man fleet and free bonuses are good bonuses. It'll take 15 days or so from level 0 with adequate skills and it's worth the investment. Also, even without gang bonuses and maximum skills you can probably through together an 750+ DPS tank against sansha/blood raider rats and those'd be the hardest for it to tank with 750 being enough for almost any mission with them so long as you're careful. ____________________
