Alright. I am putting together a second tower in Minmatar space. I already have the tower & 5 shield hardener arrays. What I need to know is what makes a *shredder* POS? Should I go with a full load of Arti's (mediums) or auto-cannons (mediums)?
Need advice. =)

Edited by: Kira Novia on 07/12/2008 21:52:04 Alright ... my tower is going to have two separate *grids*, so to speak. One for non-war-time blueprint researching+copying and a defense grid that is only activated if someone decides to war-deck me/us. I need opinions on this:
***
Structure (Status) Ballistic Deflection Array (Online) Ballistic Deflection Array (Online) Corporate Hangar Array (Online) Domination Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Domination Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Domination Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Domination Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Domination Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Domination Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Domination Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Domination Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Domination Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Domination Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Domination Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Domination Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Domination Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Domination Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Domination Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Domination Medium Artillery Battery (Online) Domination Medium AutoCannon Battery (Online) Domination Medium AutoCannon Battery (Online) Domination Medium AutoCannon Battery (Online) Domination Medium AutoCannon Battery (Online) Domination Medium AutoCannon Battery (Online) Domination Stasis Webification Battery (Online) Explosion Dampening Array (Online) Explosion Dampening Array (Online) Heat Dissipation Array (Online) Shadow Warp Disruption Battery (Online) Ship Maintenance Array (Online) ---------------------------------------------- CPU Usage: 1475 / 6000 (24.58%) PG Usage: 4352000 / 4375000 (99.47%) ---------------------------------------------- Fitting generated using My POS by Cassandra's Light.
***
What should I change? What improvements should I make?
*Edit*: Adjusted the tower slightly to include warp-disruption & stasis webification.

I'd strongly suggest dumping quite a few of those meds for smalls, and adding another stasis web or 2. ------------------------------------------------- Caeleste naves interretis res gravissimas sunt |

Clarify reasoning, please.
It's high-security space and the guns (meds) are battleship sized weapons (the only thing which would be taking a POS in high-security on would be an RR fleet).
Why would mediums be better?

You should have: 6 web batteries, 6 warp scramb, and you should be using the auto-cannons.
I also LOVE having neuts around 6 of them. And I like having some E-war, damps or jammers.
Plus you should have the 5 shield hardners to plug holes.

The biggest threat will come from RR BS gangs with logistics support. The first thing they will do is incap the scram and web, so they can warp off if targeted. I'd therefore suggest having multiples of both, perhaps also with anchored backups which can be onlined if necessary.
I'd also suggest using some small artys with faction ammo for taking out logistics ships which are repping hostile BS. Also, invest in some ECM batteries as they will degrade the hostiles' ability to remote rep. Finally I'd consider using 9 hardeners - the longer it takes to reinforce your pos, the greater the opportunity to inflict losses on the aggressors. A heavily hardened pos combined with plentiful ECM may well deter an attack in the first place owing to the time and effort it would take to reinforce.

I'll keep that in mind when I put up my pos. Haha.

What was mentioned already above. You will need warp disruptors or scramblers (I myself prefer faction scrams in key locations around tower).
Also - while minny tower has no bonuses for ECM perhaps you might want to throw in ~8 ECM batteries in there - they don't take a lot of resoures and are relatively useless (unless you have pos gunners to direct them), but they can mess up RR ocasionally - and are usually irritating enough so hostiles direct some fire towards them - but as they are considered large modules they can soak up insane amount of damage, thus increase your towers 'me not worth it' index.
High number of warp scramblers is better than disruptors for same reason - those can soak up serious amount of damage bcos they are considered large. They have a bit sucky range tho - faction ones just a bit under 100 km, nonfactions were around 70 km if I remeber correct.
About arty vs AC. I prefer artillery, bcos it's more deadly in combination with pos gunners, even with RR present. That out of way I would mount at least 6 - 8 small AC batteries, as they are pretty good at keeping the small ones away if they are properly spreaded. |

I only have 2 bits of advice and usually don't comment when it comes to POS setups.
1) It doesn't matter what you fit on your POS, it could have 1 gun or 20 guns whoever is coming to take it down KNOWS what's fitted and will come in a sufficient size fleet equipped to take it down (unless they are a bunch of disorganised rabble).
2) Only 2 things can save your POS
2-1) You defend it with ships as the POS itself wont be enough and warp in/out attacks are a pita.
2-2) You need POS gunners in co-ordinated fire to be online when the attack comes. POS Gunners are a nightmare for the attacking force. Combined with 2-1 your POS should be safe. --

Having a few Large autocannons usually helps alot when fighting against capital ships and battleship heavy gangs.
for the rest, just alot of medium arties, although I wouldnt go with domination since the ammount you are talking about makes it crazyexpensive and not that much better then standard.
hardeners on a pos are usually a waste imho, if you drop the hardeners you can fit a few extra guns and ECM, which is definately worth alot more. ----

More than 5 yes, less than 5 no.
Your statement is false and I think most people here know that it is false. If we are talking in low sec or 0.0 then this could, could have a point but even so its crap not to at least put up a 50% resist.

ECM batteries are useful even in low sec/0.0 if you manage to get to the tower before it is reinforced with gunners. They can quite reliably mess up carrier RR circles.
And yeah - 5 hardeners is optimal for large tower. Those few more extra guns will not make any difference whatsoever. If the rest of your guns will not keep the hostiles away then those 2 extra medium arties will not help either.

I would point you to this link:
+ POS Setups: Jump Bridge, Cyno Jam, Reactions, Moon Mine, LoSec Mining and Labs
But the main thing I would like to mention is... that while it is great to have those factional batteries (and they can help) Using them could be a factor in WHY they want to attack you. Once your tower is gone they can scoop them and sell these expensive batteries.
When my Technium moon (sold) was originally attacked the attackers (after they lost four caps) said one reason for attacking my POS was how much they could make from the factional batteries.
So if you really can't lose the POS then use them. (Like Cyno Jamming POS's) .. but for other type of POS's you might not want to.
