The release of Quantum Rise, EVE OnlineÆs newest expansion, has been an historic one. Never before has a massively multiplayer had a slew of hardware and technological breakthroughs that allow players to participate in fleet fights on a massive scale. There was only one problem: the game client. Many of you have reported a number of issues related to the client and how it performs on your myriad systems, and we have responded with a two patches to help alleviate the problems you have been experiencing.
But thereÆs more.
This week we will release a third patch, Quantum Rise 1.0.3, which contains a ton of new fixes bringing even more performance enhancements directly to your desktop. This newest patch is, in part, due to player fleet fight testing efforts on Singularity and your feedback. Your efforts have helped us improve EVE Online, and in his latest blog, "The EVE Client û A Love Story," CCP Atlas gives the ins and outs of the efforts that have been made to kick the issues in their asteroids.
You may read all the blog goodness here.

Very nice blog, lots good work in there :)
Quote: Simulation performance improvements: We have found some performance bottlenecks in the physics simulation engine that runs the world update loop. These are mostly relevant to the client that runs its own simulation loop and will have a performance benefit in scenes with a lot of objects in close proximity of each other.
This interests me quite a bit, will this have any impact on the desyncs which are always caused by having lots of ships bouncing around? ------------

Perhaps a not-well-thought-through thought about that lazy model loading... don't you know what you are in for, loading-wise, when the player has entered warp? I mean shouldn't you be able to spread what needs to be loaded over the duration of the warp?
That leaves the question about what arrives there between the time you enter warp and actually arrive, but as I said... just a thought.
Otherwise, it feels great to play a game that so many people care about, and that such a dedicated team of people work on, and improve on a daily basis. Keep it up, it is always greatly appreciated. |

There is still one unappreciated area where Lag still hits me the hardest, and it's without ever seeing a single NPC. It's when I have the market view and the wallet view open simultaneously, and am updating a large number of orders (300+)
After working my way about halfway through my list, the time it takes to open an order takes increasingly longer for the client to respond to basic UI commands. We're talking 30+ seconds between right-click and the context menu to appear.
I know I've complained about this previously (2006-ish) and with recent improvements such as disabling the autorefresh I thought you'd had it licked. Except, it's not. I got to thinking it might be a system-wide memory leak because the issues seem to get much worse the further from DT you get (comparing times with similar system populations) but only the guys with the tools can really check that for sure.
Being able to update my orders without having to wait 30 seconds for the system to respond to UI commands: that's my Need for Speed initiative.
(and yes, this issue has persisted across several system configurations and many, many Windows reinstalls. It's not my box, or my cable connection, or anything else in my control)

Actually, the following paragraph from the blog does show that you might be positively affected:
Originally by: The EVE Client - A Love Story What this means in the real world is that after a certain amount of time loading resources, the memory started to become fragmented, which lead to degraded performance when copying resources in memory. We do a lot of copying resources in memory, from putting a new ship on the screen to loading up a menu, so after a while that process became slower and slower. This resulted in across-the-board performance drops after playing for a while with a specific playing style. This did not affect all players on Windows XP and not all hardware seemed to be affected equally which is why it was pretty hard to find. Also, this did not happen on Windows Vista.
As that particular performance issue is being improved, then hopefully your circumstances will be bettered by it.

Just to doublecheck if I got this right...
Even if I DON'T turn off turret effects, I will see improvements on the freeze time at warpin, because all those turrets will only ask my client to load them after it has received notification that they're actually firing (which may take up to 10 seconds from the warpin time)?
Or does your pretty graph(tm) only apply to having turret effects off entirely? The description isn't quite clear. I understand that it will be performing better without turret effects than with, but I do like my eye-candy!

Is it CCP's goal to have the same client performance when you have all the graphic options on, as if you had all of them off? Its nice that you are able to turn it off in PVP, but when I rat/mission, I would like to see all the bells and whistles, yet keep the same performance.

That is correct. No turrets are loaded up into the scene until you see them firing. With this change the premium client should load up most scenes faster than the classic client on modern hardware.

I remember making this comment back in beta, a few times since, and never really got a clear answer:
Why not start loading the destination grid while still in-warp?
There seem to have been huge strides in reducing the freeze time but it's always going to be a load-intensive process. Does it not make sense to do the load-heavy stuff while the player can do virtually nothing anyway?
And a neat bonus: you'd actually see the fleet come into view from a tiny dot of ships to an expansive fleet, sorta like stations are visible the whole-way-in, giving a much cooler warp-in look =)
The flip side is of course to start loading incoming ships for players waiting on the destination grid before they've arrived. Though this has the unintended consequence of a load-spike serving as a bit of a spidey sense for an incoming fleet =p -- eve-mail.net (thread) Instant Messaging and E-mail for EVE players |

Is is already being done to some extent. We do preload some of the models and textures up to an extent that we can without giving away tactical information (we don't want people to know what they're up against while they're still a billion km's away). This asynchronous loading of resources is much more advanced in the Premium graphics codepath. It is partly because of this that the Premium client loads a grid quicker. We will be making more advances in preloading in subsequent patches.
In order to take advantage of this you must have your resource cache size set above 0. Basically, I would recommend having your resource cache size set as high as your computer can manage; having resources ready for the graphics card in memory is always faster than loading and constucting them from scratch.

* You are doing 'look at' on the ship. * The ship is shooting its turrets and Turret Effects are enabled (default).
What this means is that ships will not show their turret models until the point when they are fired. If you disable Turret Effects through the settings menu (the escape menu) then you will generally only see turrets on your own ship.
This kinda gives us moviemakers the shaft. Would you consider giving us the option to enable all turrets without having to do a 'look at'? It'd work well as a drop-down box, like:

Can't speak for the Mac client, but Premium under Wine in linux currently gets better performance than premium under Vista. That comparison is made with all settings all the way up, except no shadows (they don't work in Linux afaik).
So... I don't think linux is getting the short end of the stick, but CCP should either drop their useless Cedega deal or push them into supporting premium like their GPL cousin can.

That is something we can consider. Perhaps with something like a prefs.ini flag at a later date.
However, if you are making a movie and you need to see the turrets it's pretty easy just to do quick 'look at' at the more prominent ships in your frame and their turrets will be loaded for the remainder of the scene.

You know what would be great in the future?
A PC profiler application (or the ability to create a PC profile in the client.) Nadeo uses this with great success, I believe. When you download Trackmania Nations Forever, it runs a series of stress tests on you machine, and chooses the appropiate settings depending on the results.
Vista has the WEI, which I don't know if it useful and if you're using that info for anything, but it would be great to be able to run a series of tests on your machine and know how capable it is of using this or that feature. It will also be great for first time users, specially when the game gets launched in a box.
If you want to see it in action download Trackmania Nations Forever (be warned that it used to have a lot of DRM features) and see it for yourselves. Then, with this profile it would be easier for your customer service to track problems and know exactly what kind of machine the player is using.
With that and LogServer you'd see the time of your bug reports reduced, imho.

MOAR FPS !!! good
Actualy a nice blog. Did you consider 3 levels of resource loading for turrets, drones and effects:
1. all loaded 2. loaded when affecting player ship (missile/turret hit, player ship firing, web effect etc.) 3. all off
Option 2 would not impact visuals much (you still get effects when your own ship is either source or target) and would get good performance still.
If drone models are not loaded, will they still be represented by brackets ? --- SIG --- CSM: your support is needed ! |

I'd love to get aboard the 'Happy Train' in this thread, but sadly we've heard "we've slain the lag monster" before several times, and yet the same issues still plague larger fights.
It seems to me rather than address the issues with smartbombs, turret models, ships exploding etc you're just giving us options to turn them off and recommending that for PVP - which incidentally still doesn't stop the lag in most situations.
Well for me that seems a bit of a kop-out. Creating a gorgeous space game then telling us in order to actually play it in real time you need to disable the 'gorgeous' is a con.
Still, nice to read another blog and hope you'll keep working on it as I'm sure a lot of it is down to technical limitations rather than your programming, so fair play - just don't treat us like idiots by advertising a lag free game, then delivering a marginally less laggy (with more disabled stuff) game after this uber patch.
Cheers.

I'm not an avid gamer and didn't play EVE before working at CCP Games. I do play now as much as I can in high-sec fluffy-bunny world so that I understand the mechanics of the game but the only fleet fight action I get is when I monitor these things to profile client/server performance.

So why is audio put into EVE at all? Answer: to give the player a better situational awareness. However, when I am in a fleet fight with more than 50 players, there is just a constant noise mess from gunfire and exploding missiles. So that does not help to increase situatiational awareness, so people turn off audio completely and gain performance.
However, pilots are loosing audible feedback from their own ship that way. You can no longer hear when you get hit, or if your weapons are out of ammo, or if you decloak. That is very bad because in a fleet fight, pilots have their eyes on the overview, or fleet window, but not on their modules or tank.
Suggestion: Add an audio option that disables all noise except the events that affect the own ship: - ship gets hit - own weapons fire - out of ammo - out of cap - ship cloaks / decloaks - ship warps
That would save lots of performance and even increase situational awareness compared to todays audio mess!

Oh and it will even be more realistic As there is not really sound in space is it, as theres no air. Only sound that could reach the pilot had to travel in the ship materials and or air inside the ship
Edit: Great patch!! Keep up the good work

Thanks for explaining all that in detail, Atlas! Nice work! For the first time, a large fleet battle didn't become a slide show for me :D
Three things still wrecking the "love affair" with your client:
1) The overview panel has been changed a lot, and you broke about as much as you improved:
Even if you suffer through the never before necessary micromanagement of every separate window (overview panel, selection panel, drone panel, fleet panel etc), You can have them all neatly arranged and locked - then you dock and undock, and they all decided to move somewhere else on their own. (despite all snapping functions and such turned off)
And while all the new overview settings features are truly great, its still quite buggy. If you alter and save a preset, your preset-selections under "overview" or "brackets" for your custom overview-tabs suddenly change on their own!
2) Following MS' "Windows best practice" recommendations for EVE settings storage was a sucky idea! Best USER practice would be to keep settings in less cryptic formats and file naming in a folder under cache - and all of them in one place! Right now, its a HUGE pain in the butt to manage and backup the settings for more than one account. You've really just made things so much more complex and annoying for the average user.
Think EVE on a USB stick as portable software... then we're getting somewhere good! Portable Software "best practice" is the way to go... don't make us all get Thin-aware, Installaware's new product that's way too expensive but will change EVE back to do things the right way and not the Microsoft way.
3) Premium Graphics run perfectly snappy on my 8800GT, but I don't use them, because my mouse pointer gets incredibly slow, like there's glue on the screen.
AND some ships actually got uglier in premium graphics! Think Nighthawk loosing its awesome shiny blackness, Zealot getting that putrid sick dog poo green - if a car had that color, it would NEVER move off the dealers lot!
You people should consider these things, we're the ones who have to fly them! If a color wouldn't sell on a car lot, don't color OUR ships like that!

A lot of these improvements may only help those close by in the EU with fast clean connections. I highly suspect that the EVE client doesn't always gracefully handle degraded Internet conditions from trans-oceanic and trans-continental connections.
Specifically some of the effects you addressed also occur when the data exchange rate drops too low, is corrupted, or is lag-bursty (jammed and released). The client can't draw stuff for which it receives incomplete data or does not receive data in a timely manner. By not graceful, I mean that the intuitive feel is that bad data conditions can cause the loss of entire frames or more - while the client clumsily figures out and corrects for those error conditions. You should simulate that more. Maybe the client should take the "pulse" of the connection and adjust the characteristics of the display dynamically based on the speed/latency/error rate of the data connection. THe client could also periodically inform the server of these conditions so that it doesn't try to force more data than can make it through.
P.S. You are using OS calls for routine memory management? Uh, I was under the impression that while the OS handlers were good, that they were really only expected to handle the most coarse growth and shrinkage of applications. That is, I was under the impression that OS memory management calls were for periodic top level allocations of memory and that then specialized compiler subroutines would manage fine details in a manner tuned to the application -- especially for real-time stuff.

Ok...I appreciate all CCP is doing to improve framerates and client/server performance but it sounds like you are doing so by making everyone turn off all the bells and whistles the game has to offer that makes the game so enjoyable to play. Instead of (nerfing) brackets, graphics options, etc....why not spend more time optimizing the code/hardware/whatever to handle the brackets, explosions, shaking, etc.... (although camera shaking is annoying...tyvm for allowing us to turn that off at least).

Not at all. Turning off options is just part of it. We're doing a lot of work in improving performance of EVE in all its high-detail glossiness as I talked about at-length in the blog.
Of course we would like to be able to run 1000 person fleet fights with awe-inspiring graphics on a 1 GHz machine with 512MB of RAM but at some point the hardware is simply incapable. To allow people to participate we're giving them more graphics switches so that more people can play even if EVE isn't gorgeous for all.

Well, if this post is any indication of the quality of your bug-reports, I'm not surprised. A brief scan of the forums should be adequate to show that your experience is not being shared with the majority of players.
Simple solution: take your computer to a competant IT practitioner and give him/her money to fix it.

Adding more "3D" to the sound would be nice, along with exponential dropoff with range.
Some noises need to be louder (the wuup-wuup-wuup of the warp scrambler for example), other noises need to be softer - I don't need to be bleeding from the ears by the time I've finished killing Zor, with his Cataclysm cruise missiles hitting me every 2 seconds for 15 minutes...
I've had a few PvE experiences where the jump to the next deadspace pocket must have been small enough to almost be on the same grid - seeing the little blob of red zoom out to become many ships spread out over 100km is really quite spectacular. More in-warp loading of models please :)
Thankyou for keeping us informed, CCP.

Something like a dual core machine with 2GB of RAM and a 128+MB graphics card. Maybe I should have used the phrase "modern gaming platform" since my home computer isn't that good though. ;-)

Err... You might want to correct that blog a little... Since the 1.0.3 patch lots of people have had issues with the game crashing, loss of connection without a reason and other problems. Maybe you should try to make the servers run smooth, but not overdo it. Remember, after tight comes very, very loose. I want this game to look it's nicest when things are quiet but be able to maintain decent fps in fleet battles WITHOUT having to enable and disable all this stuff manually. Hopefully that's in the pipes
P.S. Although a new particle system is cool, I can't wait for some awesome shaders for shield hits and repairs as well as armor hits and repair. Oh, and for Pete's sake, make missiles come out of the launchers allready.

can i have eve clinet from 2005 back? you know the one when i was able to play on 6 accounts without being constantly dropping? can you do that? cause this piece of !@#$% aint working you know.
please mail me link to that 2005 client so i could still be able to log into the game and play a little from time to time and not only pray to log in and be able to switch skills thanks in advance
oh, and yes, i have petitioned it like 2-3 times. tried to send logs from 'logserver' but your mailing/petitioning serivce did an awesome job to delete them each time i have sent them so i have passed on that.

And from what we players can tell, you've pushed it too far and broke something that's essential to the server functioning correctly...
this is only about the client love.

yeah it sucks, and CCP should write up a blog for it. not correct s bog that has nothing to do with game crashes.
maybe we should fix those underwater server cables while were at it, and reinvent the internet.
that said I am :P but that's not important.

Will there be any patches to allow the client to use SLI or other multi-gpu setups?? Currently I have to turn off SLI or EVE becomes completely unplayable. Also I can not run more than one client or even the eve client with any other game at the same time as EVE seems to lock up all system resources and the system slows down to a crawl. I can do this with any other games but EVE seems to not like running with another instance of anything including itself.

Guys full scale PVP has as much to do with your PC and client settings as it does with server side.. optimize your clients!!!
Reed the dev blog about client performance boosts given with recent feature additions.

Originally by: CCP Fallout The release of Quantum Rise, EVE OnlineÆs newest expansion, has been an historic one.
Cute story, but how about fixing this huge ATI bug that has been making eve unplayable for over 7 months for a large number of people without it being addressed? A gate fire rendering bug that is crashing ATI cards. Read and weep here, or go ahead and silence my post, the easy way out. |
