That is pretty interesting. It is cool to see that all who played EVE were so close in their answers. But I guess that is what happens when a game is set up like EVE. I wonder what the sample size was and for the EVE players what the spread was in relation to character in game age.

Quote: But the thing I find interesting about the EVE numbers is that EVEÆs players did not get creative with the traits. 91% said the setting was ôspace.ö Everyone else said ôsci-fi fantasy.ö The end. No long tail of craziness, no outliers, no one guy putting down ôgay.ö
What kind of players did they have responding?

EVE-Online : complex, competitive space PvP with pretty good immersion. Seriously, what else did you expect out of a niche game ?

I'd be interested to know the sample population sizes for the sources. For example, if it's only a dozen EVE players, it's nice trends but not necessarily relevant, however, if it's hundreds of players, then the data becomes a lot more relevant and interesting

Was thinking the same as Atropos this morning. If the set is big enough to be statistically sound then this says a lot about the difference of players between the games as well as the games themselves. If not, it's just speculation.. and sadly there is no information on how the data was gathered there. Still a cool report but would be so much more awesome with the datasets as well so one could make his own inferences rather than just blindly following the interpretation presented in the report.
Cool stuff nevertheless, nice way to start the day.

Edited by: Tzar''rim on 15/12/2008 14:33:38 There's one things that's being forgotten; The more game driven goals an MMO has and the more linear it is, the more focussed people's assessment will be. With an open ended, player driven, player made goals MMO like EVE it's very difficult to pinpoint a trait, as there are so many. Hence people going for the 'space' bit since that's the all encompassing setting.
Case in point; WOW. The trait is raids, which is obvious since that's the only endgame content there is, therefore you'll get a focussed response from the playerbase regarding that.
As I see it the MORE different traits people come up with regarding a game, the better it is since that means you have a choice and are allowed by the game mechanics and structure to find your own goals and fun. So while the study is interesting (if the sample size is big enough) one should NOT come to the wrong conclusiosn based on the data.
More choice IS better.

I laughed while reading the WoW players description of WoW. They are a confused bunch and have, obviously, no idea what they're doing.
Glad to see EVE players being sane and having a head on their shoulders. What the poll missed was 'mimicking real life', EVE would have been the only one with that trait.

Assuming all listed EVE players filled out the survey, then you'd have a sample size of 832 for the EVE players.
Total sample size is a lot higher, since there are 317,942 WoW characters listed and that's not even counting the other MMOs in the survey.

I also had to laugh when absolutely no eve players sampled thought eve was fun. However, given the numbers, the sample size seems at first glance to be reasonably large, unless the authors fudged the numbers slightly to make it seem that way (e.g turning 50% into 51%), which is always a possibility
