Edited by: Kessiaan on 16/12/2008 11:48:20 Having been a regular poster on MMORPG.com for several years now, and having played Eve for going on two years now, I've noticed that Eve has most of the things people keep saying they want in an MMORPG...
People say they a game that isn't about gear. Eve's not about gear. Making Eve into a game about gear is a fast way to lose your shirt in a single moment of bad judgment.
People say they want a game where their actions influence the game world. That's one of the core concepts of Eve.
People say they want a game where the playerbase isn't segregated by some sort of level. Everyone in Eve plays together (or against each other, as the case may be)
People say they want a game where their skills matter. In Eve, player skills > character skills.
People say the want a game where they're not chained to some specific role the moment they roll a character. In Eve, you can train to be anything.
People say they want a game where they don't have to play 25 hours a day to keep up with the Jones'. In Eve, everything of any importance happens in real time. You don't even have to be logged in usually.
People say they want a game where they can be competitive right away, without having to grind up a bunch of levels. Eve goes out of it's way to keep vets from becoming gods compared to rookies - having more skills makes you versatile, not directly more powerful.
People say they want a game with a functional economy - another core concept of Eve.
People say they want a game with deep, meaningful pvp. PvP in Eve is certainly that.
People say they want a game where they can choose their own path and don't have to follow the script. Eve has no script - you're expected to write your own.
---
So, I'm a bit mystified as to why Eve isn't bigger than it currently is. I know the ship controls, lack of a real avatar, and CCP's tendency to royally **** up on a regular basis are part of it, but really - if Eve is what people keep screaming they want, why doesn't it have more subscribers? ... besides, I've said all I'm going to say. You're reading my sig now! Bwa!

Because the people on forums saying what they want in MMOGs are a tiny, though vocal, minority compared to those who are off playing games that offer what they want instead of whining on forums (read: WoW).
Also, I have learned from the Darkfall forums that many people are unaware of the concept of a non-fantasy MMOG. -

EVE is growing steadily. CCP and the players don't want a player base as large as that of WoW as we don't need one. Look at EBank as a beacon of success, there're about 250 thousand EVE subscribers and the bank holds four trillion ISK. EVE is fine the way it is.

I can only assume the OP is focused on a key demographic of "people", because its ****ing obvious that EVE is not what people want.
Players want a start, an end.. and something to do at the end to keep them playing. They want, as some have put it, a theme park. They don't want a sandbox where they have to make their own ways with a universe that quite honestly is pretty damned empty.
The overall reason why EVE isn't bigger than it is?
Because the first 14 day trial is absolutely dire for the most part, the game insults you with a stupidly harsh learning curve and then proceeds to slowly make it obvious that you aren't any different from anyone else despite specifically specifying that you are. (Rolled an Engineer? What difference does it make, everyone can learn the same thing so why bother with that whole part of the character creation?)
Its a niche game and probably always will be until Ambulation rears its head, then you'll see EVE pick up in terms of players...
... And you'll sure as hell wish that it didn't.

It is because people don't fully think things through. They whine and ***** and moan that if this was added it would be great, but when they get it, its not what they expected.
Take for instance flagging when you take from a jet can. All the whiner carebears wanted the ability to attack someone who stole from your can. They got it, and now we have can flipping.
Not to mention all those things listed makes EVE a very cruel universe. Some of those people can't handle the harsh reality of it. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

over the years i've suggested eve to a fair few ppl and tbh for the most part people just think it takes too long to accomplish anything and it just isn't fun when it takes ages to do anything.

I think its not bigger because it is a challenging game to master. I also believe its relatively hardcore nature compared to the average MMO keeps the attraction down. Those that do master the curve and can handle the pain become extremely loyal to it, and I think CCP understands the value of that loyalty. They'd rather slowly grow a solid, loyal playerbase, that can handle moments of dissatisfaction for the sake of the greater experience. Highly popular games tend to have extremely fickle followings that change when the wind blows. Half the struggle is coming up with new content for them to reach out for. Here, getting the big ships isn't the point. Controlling the direction of the game is, and that can be done with any ship in the game, if you know what you're doing.
What it comes down to is, we, the players of EVE, matter. I think other MMO players just don't understand how powerful that is. In the event of an emergency, my ego may be used as a floatation device.

Think of game's like movies and it becomes apparent. You take a good movie and everyone will be a critic and say this could've been better , and that scene made no sense and this shouldve been better ect ect. but eve is like a movie studio. you put ppl into it and they don't know what to do, and some frankly dont care to make a movie they want to SEE a movie.
Games for alot of ppl are nothing but entertainment and they are too lazy to create thier own, so they play games. That's where eve lacks. There's no story to follow, yes you can make your own but ppl don't want to make thier own at least not from scratch. What most ppl want is a good compelling story with the ability to add to the story at the end not at the begining. ----------------------------------------------- Free Trade Corp - Flash page "I often quote myself. Because of several reasons.
1) The entrance bar to EvE is higher than all other MMOs combined. 2) The general playerbase attitude towards newbies is less than stellar which means they're less likely to stick around. 3) The EvE ingame environments are very drab. How many different shades of gunmetal grey can CCP create?
1 & 2 are the two main reasons that are crippling EvE. The population would explode into the millions if it weren't for the first two. ___________________________________________________ The Escapist: EvE Online video review. |

I think my gfs' boobs should be bigger...but you don't see me posting about it.
oh wait...
:P anyways They are looking at a "slight" expansion of EVE, but it's going to be mostly just explorable stuff that are not in known systems, and possibly in their own system. Chances are they will despawn after a while too. I don't know all the details, just what I recall reading.
