Is it worth training for large hybrids? I have 21m sp with 3.2m in gunnery (only small/medium and only gallente guns)..I'd like to get up a sniping boat with a mega but, they do dismal damage compared to other races, and then all this I hear about large blasters can't hit anything under BC size. Would I be off not even bothering atm and train say, lasers, or train large hybrids in hopes of a buff down the road?

^^This. Trained up on another char to be a high skill Gal/Amarr Recon pilot (and both have been pretty much beaten to death by nerf's atm), but in EVE the worm turns and the SP invested in this will pay off at some stage.

Large Hybrids are fine guns. For the rails, you need to learn the range limitations.
The minimum range to hit Frigate class vessels: 55km (Hit them at this range, and there's a good chance of one volleying them)
The minimum range to hit Destroyer class vessels: 45km (Some one volley potential)
The minimum range to hit Cruiser class vessels: 30km
The minimum range to hit Battleship class vessels: 10km
Under 10km, they simply don't land any shots at all. Even on stationary targets, nothing will land. In the event of an emergency, my ego may be used as a floatation device.

i am using both amarr and gallente ships and i am happy with sniping out small ships, ( missing t2 large lasers tacyons though ) but i sit at 90KM with my names tacyon on my apoc using standard ammo and insta pop frigates, my 2 scan res SB and my long range targeting sensor booster in conjunction with my level 5 locking time skill means i can get on KM's for pods aswell.
all i have had to shoot this past week is frigates/pods trying to escape from the area were taking over

What is failing to be said here is that you also need support skills. Make sure in the process of training. Things like Trajectory Analysis, Surgical Strike, Sharpshooter, Rapid Firing, Motion Prediction, and Controlled Bursts. Also Advanced Weapon Upgrades to 4 will help you with fitting issues. Your question makes no sense to me. If you want to fly Gallente battleships, you pretty much need large hybrids. If not, then don't. The only Gallente battleship that can get by without them is the Dominix, since it's drone-focused.

Yeah the first thought that crossed my mind with Baron is that he's skilled in capital guns which I am not which would explain the difference there. After I made the post I went and checked out gunnery skills in the item database just to make sure I had all of the supports which it looks like I do.

no capital turrets here at all. and with t2 guns (spec's at 4) and maxed support skills you will end up with around 10.3 - 10.5mill sp in gunnery.

Go train them, I'm sure they'll be FOTM by the time you've got enough SP to be effective with them. If not, at least you'll have them trained and ready when they do become FOTM.

PS: i have more than 15mil in gunnery, and it is the only section where i don't feel like i have wasted some of it.

I have Large Beam Spec 4. The restrictions are relative to Battleships. Due to the nature of accelaration gates and the way they position you in PvE a sniper fit is void value.
Because Eve PvP revolves around tackle any sniper concept as a killing tool is a second line, in addition to close combat. |

Got preaty much bored of this forums, at least I am. Having targets slip away or making you miss them and loosing your break thrue DPS compleetly with the weaker Web sucks, especialy with a Blaster BS. Unfortunaly you have to fight something that is A not a moron(or have at least a number of frinds that cover this aspect) and B can actualy bit back without you have a gang for backup. In this scenarios Blasters are preaty much pointless now, but since most of the EvE players stay docked or will never engage under this conditions only a few realy recogniced.
For the general purpose shure, for feeding up multiple Targets and nuking even heavy active tanks on your own not any more, taking away the epicness from a close range ship/weapontype that was the first choice for do or die people, sadly.

Mega has two very nice bonuses to hybrids and it wuld be a shame to let those bonuses go to waste. Sure it is possible to fit tach's on a mega and get the same DPS. But that's an energy hog and requires you to use ACR rigs or sacrifice low slots.....and even then your optimal will not be as high as rails. |

Im guessing their set for a nerf with the next big patch, at the moment they seem a little OP.

Blaster's, especially mediums, aren't nearly as good as before but they are good. Large blasters I just shove on Null to make up for speed loss. Does gimp the dps though If they are stupid enough to get to optimal can always swap to CN AM though.

Personaly I didnŠt realy read that people that realy use Blasters want a Lasernerf(only in the battle Thread of Gumindong vs the Alts ), nerfing Lasers wonŠt help Blasters in any way, itŠs just nerfing other stuff into oblivion to.
Even after a nerf the Blastership would still fail in many situations it was good before, and Lasers will be still better in bigger gangs(even with reduced Range\Tracking\DPS or whatever CCP would nerf).

10.1 mil here in gunnery. The only skill I dont have to 5 for large hybrid is both spec skills to 5. The 10.1 mil includes AWU 5, and trajectory analysis 5.
If you stick to one gun type 10.1-4 mil should be a 2% dmg bonus away from being perfect in the gunnery skill type for T2 large.
