Edited by: Onemic Theone on 20/12/2008 14:29:39 I have a cruiser and have been trying to rat with t, but my hit% is so poor that I've decided to go back to my destroyer. Is there any way to improve the accuracy on my cruiser so that it can effectively hit frigates? I have a target painter fitted on my cruiser already and it seems like it does absolutely nothing to improve my accuracy when I use it on an enemy frigate. It's not like the frigates get that close either. They're usually 10 or more km away, and I'll be lucky if I hit them after firing about ten shots off of my exequror. Is it my turrets themselves? my ammo?

If you list your set up might be able to help
personally I tried to use a exequror to rat in and it was pretty poor at it, maybe it was just my set up but i like using my vexor alot more seems to be good at it.

I have a dual 150mm railgun I and 2 250mm Railgun I's. I have the target painter and a hydrazine booster in the medium fitting section, and 2 100mm reinforced armor with an overdrive booster in the small fitting section.

Those frigates are fast moving and small. If you want to hit them, you're going to have to use:
1.) Smaller, faster-tracking turrets, which are better-fitted to a frigate or destroyer, so you don't gimp your cruiser's DPS vs. larger targets. 2.) Drones - the best choice if you can carry/use them. 3.) Skill-up in Gunnery to get faster tracking.
Frankly, it sounds like you are ratting in hi-sec and your best platform for fast killing of those rats is a destroyer due to its large alpha strike DPS. A turret-cruiser is a bit overboard and as you note, not optimal for that operation.
*** Had a T1 sig - it got all blowed up. Got another T1 sig - it got all blowed up too. Can't afford another T1 sig...yet. Still training for T2 sigs, f...ing newb that I am. |

Well I'm currently ratting in 0.5sec space, and do you mean smaller turrets as in the the turret size that's fitted onto my destroyer or something else entirely?

Target Painters hardly help guns, they're for missiles. Use a web.

Or just turn the tables and use a frigate to kill the cruisers and battleships no more tracking problems then

I got rocked trying to do that for one of my missions. A slave trader ship was being guarded by escorts. I was able to kill off the frigates with my destroyer, but even coming near the slave trader shipped ended up with my destroyer taking extremely heavy damage.
So for dealing with frigates in a cruiser I should fit blaster onto it instead of railguns and use web? what exactly does web do?

A web slows down ships that are targeted by it, so they are easier to hit. There are also quite a few skills which can help (look through their descriptions) and you can use an afterburner to keep the distance between you and the ships greater for a longer period of time, so their transversal velocity is lower and so they are easier to hit.

Eeeh...wrong? A target painter will increase the targets signature radius, thus making it easier to hit AND to track. (yes, I know, it doesn't make sense, but the tracking formula works that way).
A fully skills TP gives the same tracking bonus as a Tracking Computer at the added benefit of helping others to target, hit and track the target. Tracking computer has the advantage of helping you, always, and can also increase your optimal. You also do not have to wait for it's cycle to end before you get the benefit on the next target.
Pick whichever you feel is better.
Balance is important, but you will always adapt to changing circumstances and you don't whine about stuff you can't change. |

Just for the record Destroyer != Cruiser. Destroyers are notoriously paper thin tanks, if you intend to use one, you'd better be ready to warp in, pop one or two ships, then warp out. Depending on which one you use, I would recommend either Tracking Enhancers (if the low slot is available) or a Tracking Computer with a Tracking script. They'll require the Weapon Upgrades skill, but should help with some of your problem.
The other thing to keep in mind, if you're using a railgun based ship, don't get too close. Railguns do better at the edge of optimal range. Turn your tactical overlay on, and when you mouseover your guns on the hot keys, they'll get a double bubble showing optimal and falloff range. Try to engage just inside the inner bubble's range, if you can. In the event of an emergency, my ego may be used as a floatation device.
