So I'm reading the topic "Do you hide your EVE addiction" and I'm noticing a lot of people seem to have trouble talking with others about EvE, and I gotta admit whenever I've tried to explain this game to someone I'm usually at a lose of what to say and end up saying something that wouldn't interest me if I heard it. So for those of you who do talk about this game a lot with others how do you explain it? GÇ£Death and destruction are necessary to the health of the world, and therefore as natural, and lovable, as birth and life. Only priests and born cowards moan and weep over dying. Brave men face it with approving nonchalance." - Ragnar Redbeard |

Wouldn't call it an addiction, I enjoy quite a few things and out of gaming eve isn't even the largest time consumer.
But in general it goes like: Yeah its like spreadsheets with space as a background, so pretty normal. |

Maybe I shouldn't have used the word addiction, I used it because the topic that inspired this one did. What I was asking was about how to properly explain this game to others who don't know about it. GÇ£Death and destruction are necessary to the health of the world, and therefore as natural, and lovable, as birth and life. Only priests and born cowards moan and weep over dying. Brave men face it with approving nonchalance." - Ragnar Redbeard |

I never have trouble talking about it. But then again, i'm not ashamed of anything i do in it.
Usually stress the economic and industry side of it to people, because the average person is probably more interested in that sort of thing than they are in 'pwning nubs 4 tears', or just being another ship in a blob. |

I gave up a long time ago trying to explain this game to people. The only nutshell term I can think of is using the phrase 'sandbox game', but even that returns blank stares. So I just keep it to myself.
I did find one guy at work who played Eve, but he only played occasionally in blob-fest fleets so we still didn't have much to talk about. Prob a good thing tho, cos if I found someone with a similar interest-level to me I'd probably talk them to death - I have that much Eve conversation bottled up!

I usually try to stress the whole global sandbox element but something about EVE's scale gets lost in translation. I just say it's a screensaver. If they insist on knowing, I tell them them it's a very competitive mulitplayer spaceship game that involves trading, industry, war and politics. |

"What's EVE?"
"Something that fails to explain it to the person and they are now more confused than when we started"
Now:
"What's EVE"

"OHMYGODTHISISTHEBESTGAMEIVEEVERPLAYED! So you are in space, and you control a space ship, because you are in space. But you are not alone in space, there are other people there, real people. So all these real people can make anything in this game, and by that I mean the ships we fly to having different roles, even roles not actually in the game. And you can take control over solar systems, and people can fight you over it, and be in corporations and alliances. And you can join corps and alliances to steal everything they have, like this one alliance that was in war with an other, and they made one guy steal everything and disbanded the alliance, IT'S SOOOO AWESOME!"
And after that explanation people look at me with a confused look. |

Lol I did that completely by accident the other day driving around with my best friends girlfriend the other day. She looks at me all weird and I simply smile to myself. |

When I share eve with other people. I don't mention the game play. I mention the social aspects of the game as well as the mechanics of people owning space and large numbers of people fighting over space. Also I emphasize the fact that a loss in EVE actually means something. I would rather die on my feet, than live on my knees |
