Originally by: Kessiaan do nothing but EM/Therm damage
Theirs actually only 3 real dmg types and the trek ships/weapons do all 3. Kinetic (photon/quantum torps), therm and em (phasers). Explosive dmg is a purely eve affection as a dmg type as it is just a mix of kinetic and thermal unless a nuke is involved then its kin/therm and em......
Originally by: Kessiaan have a max range of around 1km
Nope the have on several occasions bombarded planets from high orbit as well as shot at and hit ships in warp that were traveling millions of miles a second. Quantum torpedoes have a effective range of 4 million km and hit for 58+ isotons of dmg (thats 1800+ gigatonnes or enough to destroy a small moon if you prefer).
Originally by: Kessiaan and have awful tracking (as evidenced by the fact that they rarely maneuver while firing).
Actually they have superb tracking as they can and have shot missiles out of the sky easily, the only issue was lock time on those occasions....
Oh god i need to have sex....
Enough to destroy a small moon my arse. 4 of them slam into a ****ty borg cube which had no shields and they dont even destroy it on impact, it takes a few seconds for the damage they inflict (minimal at best) to set off a chain reaction inside the ship which leads it to explode. On screen evidence indicates a 100MT at best.
Here's a nice little analysis http://stardestroyer.net/Empire/Essays/FiveMinutes.html
Trek ships are the culmination of technology of a human race that has been in space less than 400 years, eve ships are the technology of a race that has been in space for thousands. They would win with ease.

They've jumped back and forth with lengths a couple of times but they have been standardized at 19 now.

Maybe older versions of the torps are weaker as in several episodes the yield of quantum torps varies.
A 54 isoton yield gravimetric charge could blow up a small planet. (VOY: "The Omega Directive")
A bomb with 90 isotons of enriched ultritium had the explosion radius of 800 kilometers. Such a bomb was used to blow up a ketracel-white facility in Cardassian space in 2374. (DS9: "A Time to Stand")
200 isotons was the explosive yield of a photon torpedo with a class-6 warhead. (VOY: "Scorpion, Part II")
A photon torpedo explosion of 25 isotons could destroy an entire city within seconds. (VOY: "Living Witness")

The problem with assuming that a Star Wars ship will prevail over a Star Trek ship is that the technologies in both series' don't really mesh well.
For example, Star Wars ships use "turbolasers", which are said to be amped-up lasers. The problem is, Star Trek shields are immune to laser fire, as described in one of the episodes (at least by TNG).
Star Trek shielding is also vastly different in nature from Star Wars or Eve. In Star Trek, your shields are your only defensive measure (at least until the end of Voyager), and they don't last long against conventional arguments. However, the trade-off with Star Trek shielding is that it is effectively immune to weapons not in its class.
In short, whereas Eve/Star Wars combat tends to be a matter of wearing down enemy hit points, Star Trek tends to be more along the lines of "save or die".

Caiman Graystock said " Trek ships are the culmination of technology of a human race that has been in space less than 400 years, eve ships are the technology of a race that has been in space for thousands. They would win with ease." Err no, Federation ships are the culmination of technology of 150 members some who have been in space a very long time. The Vulcans have been in space since at least 9th century BC perhaps a lot longer. Star Trek ships can shoot at 14Au outs far outside the Eve ships 250km range limit and Star Trek ships can shoot at warp. I would think moving at faster than the speed of light proves a problem for Eve ships turret tracking and missiles. The Federation might only be 400 years old but its made up of a lot of races who have been in space 1000's of years.

Edited by: Caiman Graystock on 03/01/2009 16:07:37 You can quote quotes all you like, on screen evidence shows differently. In First Contact 4 quantum torpedoes slam into a unshielded ship and don't cause its instant destruction. This indicates a very low yield. In TFF, a photon torpedo slams into the ground fired from space and causes an explosion not much bigger than a grenade.

It's a shame the on screen stuff disagrees with you, and that Starfleet technology is always quoted via its human inventors, such as the guy who invented warp drive, or the transporter, and not the people who invented it first in their member races. Starfleet is a very human centric organisation, with human centric ship designs and technology. I see no on screen evidence to support your opinion.
Then you realise, after taking the time to read this sentence, that you have actually wasted your time, because this somewhat long sentence is not actually part of my post, it is my signature. |

Normally unshielded ships die in 1 hit to torpedoes.
A lot of people seem to be missing that torpedoes are not all the same. There are many types of torpedoes and not only that but each torpedo has up to 16 power settings although some had less like the type-6 torpedoes only have 10 power settings. For type-6 torpedoes setting level 1 is just a fireworks display, level 5 is the standard yield and level 10 yields is illegal. The reason torpedoes damage varies so much is because of the many types of torpedoes used at different settings. If you listen closely they do sometimes say set the torpedo to level x or use torpedo type 6 or type 10 with type 10 being more powerful. If a torpedo only has a small explosion that's because it was set like that.
War ships like the Defiant had more power torpedoes then other ships. Voyager had many types of torpedoes with very limited amounts of the more powerful ones. TNG sometimes stated what torpedo and what setting to use. TNG: New Ground being a good example.

Yes there is evidence, it's just the ships the TV show focus on are the mostly human ships. The show mentions other ships that are only Vulcan and other ships that are mostly other races. Are we watching the same show? humans invented the warp drive met the Vulcan's who already had warp and over time shared better warp technologies with the humans. As I recall they didn't say humans invented the transporter they said the first human made transporter was invented by Emory Erickson. ____ Telltale sign of their presence is non-linear teleportation (www.eve-online.com/races/theodicy/Theodicy_All.pdf)

I based my assertions on what I see on-screen, not what's in the books or what have you.
From what I see on screen, 99% of the time, is 2-5 ships less than one kilometer away from each other, either completely stopped or moving very slowly, shooting each other in the face and seeing who dies first.
This implies low tracking / short range. Sometimes they shoot at things in warp with torpedoes, but, again, they're usually right next to them, or it's something Geordi or Scotty pulled out of their ass and doesn't relate to anything else in the series before or since.
And, of course, they do shoot at planets or cities, but those targets are either really big, or there's someone actually on the ground who can (presumably) paint the target so they can hit it even though it's well outside what seems to be the weapon's range from what we see on screen.
Also, since the Federation is a communist state it's expected that their tech would lag behind what you'd normally expect, be it sci-fi or elsewhere.

Highly armored Borg ships? Did you ever see Best of Both Worlds? The Enterprise has no problem tearing chunks out of a cube, no less. The Sphere was a glorified escape boat, shooting pityfully low damage weapons at the surface, why wouldnt the enterprise have used anything but its highest output torpedoes to destroy it? It does, it uses 4 quantum torpedoes, and they don't do much except penetrate this so called highly armoured vessel with ease and damage an internal system that causes the ship to explode not instantly but seconds later. If they were anywhere near the gigaton range they would destroy even the most hardened vessel on impact.
A lot of what you have written isn't supported by on screen visuals. The same goes for your comment regarding Starfleet not being a human centric organisation. Where were all these non-human starfleet ships when the entire fleet engaged the dominion? All you have are throwaway lines of dialogue.
Then you realise, after taking the time to read this sentence, that you have actually wasted your time, because this somewhat long sentence is not actually part of my post, it is my signature. |

Dude, really, know your nerd-stuff before you post
All the Federation starships have the same design of grey colours and mostly saucer-based hulls in the later years. Go and read some materials about them. All the Federation races that have people enlisted, fly on these ships with some keeping their original design vessels still in use at their home systems. There are more than 30000 Federation "type" ships still flying when Voyager ends and new "combat and research" instead of "research first" ships are being built all the time. Humans are the in the ST universe one of the last species to discover actual faster than light travel and some races have already been flying around for thousands of years before man decided to have a party and start his civilization.

Edited by: Sila Fang on 04/01/2009 12:34:28 Nights Dawn tech pwns eve, starwars and startreck. - ships can instatntaneous jump between systems as long as they get their heaidng and speed right and are out of a grvaitational field. - they use incredibly destructive antimatter weapons that can be launched from millions of kilometers away and accelerate at 45G, making them hard for shortrange systems like eve, starwars and stratrek to intercept. - they don't have shields, but are small, fast and hard to hit due to superb countermeasures. - they have voidhawks that could easily outmatch any frigate in close quarters action.
Revelation space: - can take planets out from the edge of a solar system, but lacks speed or manoeverability. - has relativistic weapons and hand held AkAm projectors (accelerated antimatter) - Can attack you with nanobots or viruses too
Commonwealth Saga technology would rip startreck apart, and they develop it within 1 year - nova bomb can snuff out a system in seconds - douvoir missles travel ftl and destroy their targets with shere kinetic energy - quantum busters: immediately turn target mass into energy - force fields that can take a huge beating.
If you want to take the void sga as an extention to the commonwealth one, then you also having Hawkin m sinks allowing you to fire blackholes into targets, 50 lightyears/hour FTL drives, near perfect stealth and all sorts of other tech goodies.
Do to be honest, eve, starwars and startrek ar the bottom of the pile, with it being arranged like:
almost evrything else > eve slightly> Starwars > startrek
