You should be bashing the UK, it sucks anus. Mind you you have to realise 2.4b is pittance these days, thats not the point. I personally dont think its the teaching tbh, nearly all of my maths teachers were complete *****s, but they were good i have to give them that. The exams are fairly easy though, (you could get an A in less than 1 week revision - I know because i did).
Its not just due to poor education, but also down to the culture that the kids grow up in. Too much TV, too many disractions (on purpose to keep your mind off important issues). Celeb culture teaches kids its ok to be thick as pig **** because anyone can 'make it'.

Indeed, there are only varying degrees of distortion. The BBC not so much, Sky a bit further, Fox off the scale. ------

Unsurprising really, what do we do about it? Let's face it in a couple of generations the UK is definitely going to be populated by the crew of the Hitchhikers guide 'B Ship'.
I love this quote from that first links feedback comments:
Quote: I was amazed by the speed with which my students (operating systems course) went from looking slightly confused to completely switched off once I mentioned something wouldn't be in an exam. I was going into detail of things like ZFS on the assumption that people who had opted to do a computer science degree were actually interested in the subject - apparently not. My favourite quote from the entire year though was a complaint from one of my students: I'm paying -ú3,000 a year for this degree. I don't expect to be told to read stuff in a book!

Yes, in Highschool I find a common question upon entering something new is "will this be in the exam?". I honestly didn't get why this was important till I saw this - must have been because I was busy paying attention to the lecture and not the class

So...
You laugh at people who are rubbish at maths...
So you think you're good at maths, eh?
What is the definition of an infinitely differentiable Riemann manifold? What is the Hausdorff dimension of the Seirpinski Gasket? Prove that the set {1/n such that n is a natural number} union {0} is compact.

Agreed that's why i wanted to start fab labs up. People are stuck in there homes like prisons. for a small fee and getting some old electronics together and some raw resources (wood metal etc) they could spend there free time working with a small group building something, it gets them socializing, studying (Adults need help to) its increases the core education behind the masses at the bottom. They could also use it to repair old appliances (instead of paying for new ones).
The UK needs something like this to help patch up the damaged social structure. Increases adult, teenager and child education (for a VERY small fee compared to school, college, University) Helping adults of of poverty and into better jobs.
Also makes more locvations other then PUBS and CLUBS to go to.
This also moves onto invention and ultimately accomplishment and happiness.

That's a cynical and one-dimensional way to view it.
When I grew up the system was holding back promising students by giving all resources to failing students.
A better route would probably be to evenly spread resources, and make sure that those that fail get extra attention - but same goes for the promising students.
I know it got a bit dull when I was in the second grade and had done six years worth of schoolbooks. Until I hit the 7th grade I was spending my time playing games and reading books as I had done it all already. When things got more serious on higher levels I hadn't really studied for five years, so I skipped school and started to work instead. I did quite well, been forward, got contacts, earned quite alot of money etc, but in hindsight.. I'd much rather have stayed in school and got encouraged and got some feedback on how to study.
Same goes for pets tbh. You can get a dog that doesnt need much attention, just feed and walk him now and then. Or you get one that needs constant training or he'll go mentally ill. So.. wheeerreeee's joooohnnnnyy?

@Shanzem.
I have seen for myself a lot of what you're talking about in your various posts. Seriously though, you're preaching to the deaf if you think English (or anyone else in the UK for that matter) will listen.
They have been programmed by society to think that everything is peachy and the UK is still top dog in the world at everything. They also think that licking the dogs balls enough will stop it biting them. Such programming is hard to break and they'll only learn the hard way.
I'm already off to Europe in the next few days and good riddance to the UK. I would suggest you give up trying to reprogram the Brits and go yourself. Leave them to their fate.
