****** was an idiot. Terrible commander in chief like George Washington but both were great politicians. George were a better leader though, no doubt about that. No ****** was really stupid and if he was not all of Europe could have been Germany now and no one would really object to it. But if he was not an idiotic psychopath to begin with he would probably never start a war in the first place, paradox!
I guess George had a better "cause" to fight for, that cause would have been fought over even if George did not exist?! So point I am making is, if not for ****** Germany might never have started WW2 but with or without George I am sure England would have lost their colony eventually as they did with all their colonies, at least bigger ones. |

I never said the Roman Empire was the largest, just arguing baltec's seemingly infallible view of anything and everything English. I am, however, arguing that the Romans made a much bigger impact and contributed much more to what we have today, judging by just how long ago it was that they made these feats that were nothing short of miraculous at the time...feats that are still relevant today.
Sure, the British Empire brought a sort of civility to many parts of the world and should be commended as such, but they didn't exactly invent the wheel...they just made everyone else's wheels more like British wheels.
Personally, I'm much more thankful for a government in which its leaders are elected than tea and punctuality. And terrible eating habits. And an inability to let go of a 200 year old grudge in which no one really cares apart from them.
The rampant anti-Americanism in England is pure, unadulterated hypocrisy. They don't despise Americans because we're loud, obnoxious, and stupid...there are plenty of those people everywhere. They don't despise Americans because of America's imperialistic tendencies through its military and foreign policies, either. They despise America because they feel England should be leading the charge with its own imperialist foreign policies, and feel they have somehow been usurped by "those savages from the colonies". Everyone should be more like the English in their mind. Ironically, Americans feel the same way about America. Thank the gods the rest of the world isn't like either. |

You have to admire their disdain, not just for everyone else, but even themselves. They're nothing if not consistent.
I'll still take that over the flag-waving morons in the states. The English are some of the coolest, most intelligent, funniest, hilariously witty and most civil people I've ever met. The bad side is that they're also the most arrogant, belittling, smug pricks I've ever met as well. They're still trying to use the word "yank" as a derogatory term, as if we didn't think of it as a term of endearment.
Most Americans are too stupid to even pick up on their snide and sniveling loosely-veiled insults towards Americans, which just makes the ones who are pricks that much more endearing to me. Americans typically love the English and find them charming, even while they're being told what fat, dumb, wastes of oxygen they are in ways the average American doesn't even pick up on. It's really mean and spiteful, but goddamn is it funny. |

The British do tend to make fun of themselves a lot, and are quite good at it.
There are a lot of Americans fighting stupidity on the home front and they are in fact starting to win. Though I fear the people who have led the stupid for so long are going to get creative given the power and money (what's left of the money) they could lose.
Just recently a friend of mine caused one of the most notoriously corrupt political hacks to have a public breakdown and may have broken the back of the establishment control in the region but this raises the threat footprint of people who are otherwise easy targets. Keeps me up at night given the history of "long knives tactics" and what happens when "a" Reichstag burns down.

Forget the politicians, this is the real meaning of the U.S.-U.K. "special relationship."

Herzog Wolfhammer wrote:George Washington: Britain's Greatest FoeIf it's any condolence, everything that the colonists fought for was lost in 1789 when the Articles of Confederation were replaced by land speculators. The new document is known as the Constitution. It's first affect was the Whiskey Rebellion. Ironically, the event that was the first nail in the coffin was personally led by.......... George Washington. He presided over squashing what was an expected outcome to the Constitution. So people who have more than the usual comic book version of history know George Washington as quite a bastard really and not just for the British. Notice how it said nothing about him being a bad person, only about him being a great military leader. He says "You've already had breakfast." I ask "But what about second breakfast?" |

Up until 1995, mainstream music from both countries was great. Since then it's all been utter tripe on both sides of the Atlantic; not a single mainstream recording artist since then has done anything remotely interesting without completely aping earlier bands.
Underground is another story, and being a huuuuuuuuuuuuge fan of doom, England is where it's at...especially mid-90's doom like Anathema, Cathedral, and My Dying Bride. Let's not forget the almighty Carcass, either.
Then you have Radiohead, Fields of the Nephilim, newer Anathema, Antimatter, Porcupine Tree, etc. The English make the most beautiful sad music, whereas in the US bands tend to make more visceral, smacked-with-reality awesome music...and both are equally amazing. For my inner turmoil boiling over, I have The Silent Enigma from Anathema. For the seething and self-loathing, I have Dirt by Alice in Chains.
Music is the one undeniable factor in both countries in which you simply cannot argue for one or the other; every single band quite literally wouldn't exist without the predecessor of the opposite country.

The only solution is to bombard England from orbit. With nice clean rocks, no nukes, that way we Scots can use whats left of England as a rubbish dump and quarry.
We are also well armed with Gingers. Do not make us use them. |
