I am thinking of ditching XP and moving to Linux. Trying to read up on requirements to continue playing EVE.
First my spec: Intel Quad Q6600 4GB memory nVidia GTX8800 4.5 TB space
From what I can gather, the Linux EVE install uses Cedega, but I don't know if you have to become a member for it to work or not?
I see others use Wine and the windows version to run EVE. Is that better than the default Linux EVE (Cedega) version / method of playing EVE?
Also, while not a CCP program, I assume you use wine to run EFT/EVEHQ type programs under Linux?
Any suggestions / comments regarding EVE and Linux.
Oh yeah - thinking of going to Ubuntu

Yes.

EFT runs under wine. Don't know what EVEHQ is.

Don't delete XP. You have more than enough space.

You might have some problems with EVEHQ due to its reliance on .NET, not saying it would be impossible to run under Linux but perhaps not trivial. I generally avoid .NET applications but mono might help?
Should you give Linux a try? Yes (it can't hurt).

I originally switched to linux as a dual boot (so if I had problems, I would still have my windows installation). Once I installed Linux (Ubuntu), I never went back to windows again. After I got everything installed, I spent some time getting the official client running (not understanding how crappy it was compared to running under wine with the windows premium version). I spent a decent amount of time getting everything working (particularly getting vent to work with push-to-talk), but was very happy to not have to mess with windows. Runnning EVE premium under wine was the best decision I could have made. My performance in linux is better than I ever had in windows (though to be fair, I never played eve in windows after the client/sever speed enhancements). There are some quirks with running under linux (the loss of focus bug is particularly annoying), but all in all, I am much happier with linux. ________________________

Your machine looks like it should have no problems running EVE, though I would recommend starting out with a dual boot until you get used to Linux, plus it's useful for stealing Windows files, such as the fonts EVE uses. And I would definitely advise running the Windows EVE client using wine, I've never had much success with anything using Cedega, but wine's always pulled through for me :) |

No. Better try it as a dual boot, I still dual boot and I've been using Linux for 4-5 years now. I love it but still there a few shortcomings here and there. First try using it for a while until you feel more comfortable. Most people I know give up when they see that:
1. It doesn't look like Windows. 2. It doesn't work like Windows.
which is funny 'cause those people usually start with "I want to try something different"... --------------------------------------

Ubuntu 8.10 works great for both classic (with Cedega) and premium (with Wine). You don't even need to chase around video drivers since it comes with good-enough drivers for nVidia.
In my case I had to remove pulseaudio to get mumble to work correctly, everything else just worked.
No need to get cedega, classic client download will install a customized version for you.
