Was it ever?
Eris has always been superior imho and the marauders took over the other end of the role. As mentioned though, battlecruisers and the cane especially are quite hot for it. Parrots, commence!

'Cane with a full rack of Cargohold Expeander IIs will hold 2000 m3+ cargo, and can fit 4 salvagers/4 tractors, not to mention a rudimentary tank as well as a AB.
It's the salvage king before Marauders. No question. Kinda nice to be able to salvage a L4 in one go...which a Catalyst won't.

I use a Cormorant (destroyer) for salvaging missions in Hi-sec, but I often salvage using my Drake when out in 0.0...this is simply because my destroyer wont last very long salvaging in 0.0 belts if 3 BS suddenly spawn. |

If you put cargo rigs on a Cat it can salvage a whole lvl 4(like AE.)
It moves around much better than a cane. |

Salvaging? Such an ambiguous term. The Best Salvage Ship in game is either a Frigate or Interceptor, as they're faster than any slow-as-molassas ship even with tractors, and have more than ample cargo space for salvage.
Now, if you're asking what the best Mission Salvager is, I wouldn't have a clue. Running Missions is way too low brow for me.

Any dessie is a VERY good one for this. The only thing that is annoying t me is the cargo space. Cargo expanders just aren't enough. Brutix seems like a winner when you want to go only a FEW step up. Stop whining. |

Coercer has only marginally less space than a Catalyst, but can fit a 10MN AB with a 4/4 split, which matters if you're using a salvage alt (hi!) in the missions. Thrasher can too but rather less space, but if you jetcan then that doesn't matter either.

I run a hurricane/Orca combo, the cane grabs the close wrecks and salvages them. The Orca pulls the far wrecks closer so the cane can grab them. Once finished I drop everything into the Orca and move on. |

I'm afraid best salvagers (if you mean missions) will be marauder class vessels fitted for that purpose (ie expanded and salvage rigged) |

I like my Flycatcher with 8x salvagers, and a signal amp II in the low slots so i can target 8 cans at once.
It's alittle faster than the T1 varient too

The catalist as always been rather nice for salvaging.
I used to use one with a 10mn afterburner, it would do over 1k/s so even those wrecks at 40k didnt slow me down that much.

I'd personally rather put 3x Salvage Tackle I rigs on a 'cane rather than 3x Cargohold Optimization I rigs. You've got just over 2000 m3 already with 6x Expanded Cargohold II modules in the low slots.
I think the Catalyst is the best loot/salvage destroyer. Cormorant has a nice cargohold but only one low slot. Coercer has plenty of low slots but only one mid. Not so sure about the Thrasher.
If all you're doing is salvaging and not looting, then probably the Vigil is best. It's fast, salvage doesn't take up much cargo space (aside from those metal scraps) and it's agile. I'm not certain about the capacitor though. I've tried salvaging in both a Kestrel and in a Condor, and the Kestrel works better for me. The Condor has such a small cap I tend to run low while using salvagers with the AB going. |

You've got it right with the Vigil - speed is the answer... ...and if you're salvaging Metal Scraps, best to move along to the next Mission.

I use a Caldari Navy Hookbill.
Fast - 4 hardpoints for salvagers - and its got a healthy buffer tank (something I need for low sec operations ).
4x Salvagers
1MN Afterburner II 2x Cap recharger II F-S9 Medium Shield Extender
2x Overdrive Damage Control Unit II
3x Salvage Tackle
~900 m/s - rapid salvage, and tanks enough to avoid being insta popped while moving.

If you throw a cap recharger II on the condor you can perma run the salvagers and AB without breaking a sweat. That said, the Vigil is still the faster ship. |

Best salvager has never been a Catalyst.
Hurricane / Marauders are the best mission loot % salvage ships.
Destroyers are good, but not the best.

I still think a Catalyst is a good salvage-ship, esp. when you set up 1 for every system you are flying in. While this might be some trouble until its done, afterwards you got a salvager ready in all your mission-systems, just need to warp to the station with your mission ship, change to salvager, loot & salv and then go back to your mission ship.
Taking the time into consideration you would need to fly back to your base and get your cane (which is ofc the better salvager, no question!) and fly back to your mission and back to your base you will see that in most missions its not faster than with the in-system-Catalyst.
Wont work if you change your agents very often, but in all other cases its ok for me. |
