I know that Portable Apps was mentioned in a post here in OOPE recently, and I just thought I would expand on it a bit.
For those of you that are unfamiliar, Portable Apps is a nifty little program that is designed to be run from either a USB hard drive or Thumb drive. The default setup includes several programs, including a full install of Open Office!
Additionally there are several really neat "portable" applications specifically designed to work with portable Apps. Firefox is available (I'm using Firefox Portable right now!) as is the fantastic Pidgin IM client (formerly known as GAIM).
Combine any of the "Internet" based apps with Portable Tor and you have a rock-solid secure surfing/messaging/blogging/whatevering platform for using on any windows-based PC (also works great on linux boxes with Wine on them)
I highly recommend Portable Apps to anyone here that has a School or Work environment where you aren't allowed to install your own apps due to Admin restrictions, or when you just want to keep your personal surfing and IMing personal.
DISCLAIMER---- I take no responsibility for anyone using Portable Apps and then getting fired/expelled/otherwise punished. While Portable apps is secure and safe, using it in an environment where it may be frowned upon is done at your own risk. ------

Must be an old PC with PS2 ports still on it.
Any modern PC and they CAN'T disable the USB ports because there are no PS2 ports to connect an old mouse and keyboard to!

Most (all) modern BIOSes let you determine the number (if any at all) of USB ports you want activated. |

True. But his statement implied that ALL the USB ports were disabled.
However it would be wise to doublecheck the keyboard and mouse connections to see if ALL the USB ports are disabled, or just the front-panel ones.
Even if all the ports but two are disabled, there is always the "USB Hub" option. Attach a small USB 2.0 hub to one of the ports and then attach your mouse or keyboard to the hub along with your USB storage. While it IS possible to prevent this, very few if any Admins ever bother as preventing this type of access often causes more trouble than it's worth. (IE: CEO or other PHB's coming down on you because the security policies you put in place won't let them plug in their iPod, etc.)
I suspect that he's just on an older machine that still uses PS2 ports. Where I work we still have a few machines deployed that have PS2's on them, although they are being rapidly phased out. of course, we also don't disable the ports as we have many many salesmen and managers that need to charge and sync their blackberries. Blocked USB would never work here. Tactical Logistics using the last T1 Frigate hull!
