So, reading about the upcoming Apocrypha, the phrase "New Player Experience" was included in the description. ..... New? Player? Experience? New. Game. Enhancement.
Are the similarities too close? Oh please, oh please, oh please, for the love of the Jove, not another NGE!! Argh! Star Wars Galaxies did their little NGE whatever it was and entirely killed the whole game for me. I never went back. Quit cold turkey. Sold my character on eBay for $1.95 to some guy in England. Donated the boxed game to the local thrift store. By happen chance, somewhere, I mentioned how I liked the Star Wars Online spaceships in my final days there and how I loved to do the crafting. Someone suggested that I check out Eve Online as it had similar concepts. And here I am. Still after 3+ years. And now Eve is planning a NGE, er, um, I mean a NPE? Now I'm all for advancement and upgrades and new content and all. Still, I hope and pray to Crom that nothing like dancing characters comes to be. Its bad enough that us online game players are some of the world's nerdiest people, all the while trying to explain to friends, family and co-workers how dangerous we are out in deep space with hybrid blasters and warp scramblers. But, can you imagine how utterly pathetic it will be to show people your battle hardened pilot as he's doing an animated /me LOL and /me dance inside a station surrounded by another dozen players doing all their f_ck stupid animation emotes? Gag me with an Iteron Mark V!! Please don't turn Eve Online into a Star Wars Galaxies/World of Warcraft hybrid!! I beg of you devs! How much of my ISK do I need to donate to the "Save Eve: Online from Star Wars Galaxies and World Of Warcraft Patheticness of Stupidity" fund? I swear, if I ever get ransomed by some player as his character is doing a /me moon-walk - dear CCP almighty, where did that Iteron Mark V go.....
Please save Eve.. Please.... Do it for the 'roids..... |

NGE was a pilot. For CCP to do it would just make it stupidity at large.
Besides, CCP can't really make an NGE. It was a light bright reformat to bring it in line with the other station light bright game patterns.
EvE is the only pattern CCP has. I have seen nothing in this game to suggest an NGE effect. RIP to Oggat, mighty Master Swordsman/ Master Ranger. I don't seriously expect I will ever have to bury Ocih like that. |

The thing with the new player experience, is it's just a hand holding set of missions/in game guides that show new players how to play.
Because EVE isn't level based in the same way as other mmo's, theres no way to make the first "levels" easier, and changing the way the game works.
In Eve, being new just means you have a limited skill set.
Don't worry. Jump into Eve full bore. After a little while you'll stop and wonder how you've been in here for years on end. |

New Player Experience refers to the sorts of things that players encounter when signing up to Eve. Things like the informativeness and usefulness of the tutorial and help screens.
i.e. what new players experience in the first few hours of gameplay. |

It's just a reference to redoing the early tutorial stages of the game so a nooby can better grasp the possibilities in this big sandbox called Eve.
As for game changing design, Eve is constantly evolving and changing. Part of the reason I still play it 5 years on- it's never the same game for too long.

Edited by: Terianna Eri on 12/01/2009 20:10:24 You're thinking about it the wrong way.
You're thinking about the new player experience as
New (Player Experience)
when it is more accurately described by
(New Player) Experience
EVE is a very deep game and pretty overwhelming at first and while the real-time skill training is nice eventually, in the first few days/weeks many players find it frustrating because they feel like all they can do is wait, and this turns a lot of people away from the game, some of whom might have actually enjoyed it.
The New Player Experience is intended to get people into the game more easily - it's basically a very extensive and involved tutorial.
BTW this expanded tutorial has been called the NPE for some time, well over a year now.
BTW x2 you will be able to walk around and interact with people when ambulation comes out but as far as I can tell the folks at CCP are very insistent on not making it something where /dance means anything, and I'm personally looking forward to it.
EDIT: Crap, ninja'd by Abrazzar . Also, in before Tarminic. __________________________________

This, they wish to prevent people making fun of em with these kind of drawings;
Hopefully they won't keep on making it more and more carebear though, I am more worried about these wormholes then I am about actually making a proper tutorial and a more clear character creation process.

"New Player Experience".
How else would you describe the huge amount of work CCP puts into their AURORA project?
Thanks to that work EVE is getting to be one of the most complex games with what is arguably the most comprehensive tutorial phase of any game on the market.
Now go join one of the "balance ECM/Falcon" threads, they are getting stale and could use some fresh input

Learning curve in EVE is fine. It's not ****ing rocket science. In fact, aside from the ridiculously large number of skills (which you just get used to after a while), Eve is hardly as complicated as Anarchy Online.

To be fair, it has a lot less to do with "gaming skill" than it has to do with simple intelligence and reasoning.
Granted, the presentation and ease of use of some key aspects of the game could be clearer for a new player, as there really is a risk of "information overload" due to the game not being tiered into "starter areas" and stuff like that, but anyone can understand and play EVE.
Those that have problems are generally supreme idiots (ref: Rookie Help), or just mistook something/didn't check properly and made a mistake but are otherwise normal. Everyone makes mistakes, but it takes a certain kind of idiot (or a grand level of computer illiteracy) to ask some of the things asked in Rookie Help.

EVE do not really need that much in the way of new player expeerince, one of the great thing with EVE is the challenge to actually find how thing work and tick :).

Unfortunately SWG has ruined the words "new" and "experience" for future MMOs. Unfortunately they are very generic words used with frequency in the world, so you aren't going to avoid them.
When CCP says "new player experience" they mean the experience of new players, i.e., what a new player, joining the game, initially experiences when they first start playing. One problem with EVE is that it is so complex and such a sandbox that when you start the game it can be very daunting and you basically have no idea what to do. So CCP has been working hard over the last couple of years to substantially improve the tutorial experience for new players so that they actually stick with the game instead of being overwhelmed and quitting. That's what they are referring to. The "new" is modifying player, not experience. ----------------------------------------------------

The sky is falling, the sky is falling!
Fear not chicken little. Trust CCP to stick to their idea of what EVE should be.
However I hope that idea includes scantily-clad dancers in bars for ambulation. I know it's a T game, noone said they had to get naked to have isk thrown at them.

Edited by: Xarkon on 12/01/2009 23:58:22 Edited by: Xarkon on 12/01/2009 23:55:31 Ok, I think I'm starting to get the grammar semantics smoothed out. Yes, Star Wars Galaxies has left long lasting scars upon my fragile soul. I've still got a beef with this Ambulation thing:
Ambulation
Granted, I do kinda think it might be a little cool to wander around some of the stations. Maybe kick back at the bar or Roulette and Craps table. BUT! In close second to the /me lol and /me dance, that damn /me salute has got to be one of the all time gayest things in every online game. Arrrrrrgggggghhhhhh!!! After watching that, it makes me want to take a chainsaw to the neighbors cats and dogs to make myself feel whole again. What's next? Player owned condos in POS's? With port hole windows? To safely watch fleet battles happen outside? If Ambulation goes in, can I request a new skill? You all remember in the Return of the Jedi when that one guy loses control of his ship and smashes into the Star Destroyer's main bridge? (And maybe if you remember back far enough, when the Cylon from the original Battlestar Galactica slams his ship into the landing bay?)
New skill: Out-of-Control Spaceship Skill at Slamming your spaceship into POS Condo. Each level increases the group of dozen players walking in station that you can mangle into a bloody pulp. Level 1 allows for one group of a dozen, Level 2 extends that amount to two groups, and each subsequent level then adds another group. Level 5 allows for mangling and mutilation of an entire docking platform. Bonus: You get an additional group of a dozen if any person just prior to the time of their horrid mangling is either /me lol, /me dance or /me salute
I hate dancing MMO's

Windows in POS / stations would actually be really awesome. Open a bar with one of the walls a huge transparisteel viewport looking out into space... watching the ships come and go. |
