We are not intelligent because we are conscious. Consciousness is simply a parasite of our intelligence. If we didn't need to consciously think about everything, our brains could process information that much faster. Mathematics would come instantly, for example.
The phenomenon of unconscious processing of information can be observed to a limited degree in so-called "savants." The ability to replay a piece of music heard only once, knowing the day of the week of a date in the distant past, performing mathematical problems in an instant, etc.
If a person's entire mind worked without consciousness, in what could be termed "omnisavantism," said person could solve all problems of philosophy, and understand the illogical nature of quantum physics. Said omnisavant, however, would also be a philosophical zombie. _________________

Err, what?
Not only is it just stupid to assume limitless computational ability, but how exactly would this awesome consciousness-free intelligence get any input to tell it what to think? Even those savants you refer to are still quite conscious, if often very limited in some areas. ==========

Funny, I always thought savants were the way they were because they have no distinct right brain/left brain division. They HAVE to remember. They have no choice. |

You're confusing "consciousness" with something else entirely. By the way, what IS your exact definition of "consciousness" ?

Maybe they do, they just don't have a way to communicate it to us

I'd say that consciousness is more of an emergent property rather than a parasite.
And an advantageous one at that.
