I am looking into space exploration and wanted to know if it is worth while scanning and the risk of low/null sec. space

Depends. There are five types of sites.
Unknown signatures are combat sites. Sort of like missions, but they can escalate (give you a bookmark to another site in a different system) and have a very high chance to drop faction loot.
Gravimetric sites are hidden asteroid belts. Crap in hisec unless you're looking for specific ore, they can give you low-end 0.0 ore in lowsec and a crapton of really, really nice ore in 0.0.
Magnetometric sites are archeology/salvage sites. Gives BPCs, sometimes t2 salvage, etc...don't know too much about them. Crap in hisec, not sure about lowsec and good in 0.0
Radar sites give datacores, skillbooks and decryptors (all used in invention to make t2 mods/ships). Not sure about hisec, they're very good income in lowsec and 0.0. I average 50 mil per site in lowsec.
Ladar sites only appear in certain constellations; they're used for booster production.
Exploration is extremely random. Sometimes, a site will give you precisely ****. Sometimes, you'll hit the jackpot. Overall, I love it.

In the site, you'll find a bunch of strange cans. A Serpentis site might have Serpentis Com Tower, Serpentis Info Shard, etc...you fly at them and use a codebreaker module to unlock them. In magnetometric sites, you use analyzer modules to unlock the archeology cans

You need hacking to run a codebreaker module, and hacking can take some time to train if you don't have the pre-reqs.
Magnetometric sites are approximately 50% analyzer I (needs archeology) and 50% salvager 1 (needs salvaging). It's quite possible for a given Magneto site to consist of 100% analyzing cans, but overall it seems to break down to about 50/50. Archeology and salvaging seemed to be a lot faster to train than hacking, but the sites are worth a lot less.

As usual, read the guides under the stickies and it will answer about 99.9999% of your questions. I highly recommend this one . I used it extensively and it is still on my desk as a reference when something just doesn't seem right. This guide rightly suggests a Cov Ops for low sec - there's a quick skill train for you
I had beginners luck and hit a site worth about 40M on my first try. A multispec in the first system and a couple of tries with the Quests. This was *easy* isk!!!
I then proceeded to spend a total of about 18 hours, and over 100 multispecs, before I found the next non-combat site and it yielded about 9M. Unfortunately, I found this second site quite easily with my Quests - a dead give-away that it wasn't going to be a lucrative site.
I've also had some site that I find with the multispecs, and then after 4 or 5 hours of probing with Quests in multiple positions, I still don't find it. Using the guide referenced above, I do run another multispec ocaisionally just to make sure the site is still there.
Have some help - the better sites are much better defended and you can't open the cans until the respective rats are gone.
Skills make a huge difference; I hope you're at least 3 in Astro Trig and Signal Acq. You will really need to be 4 in Astrometrics too. Of course, most of the necessary skills are rank 5+ too.
Bottom line - it can be fun when you find something, but realllly slow until you do. If your luck is like mine, you won't 'win EVE' through Exploration, but I enjoy it.

what none of these posters has said is, it takes hours(sometimes i have to come back the next day and keep looking) to find some sites......but even with that, radars are the reason i have a large amount of isk, and i get a feeling of personal accomplishment when i find one that was hard to find. best sig ever:)

Analyzer and Salvager for Magnetometric 0.0 can yield t2 salvage. |
