I'm Joining The US Air Force and starting basic in April. I'm told the the Air Force has the highest chance for being stationed in one of the 8 places where you would like to go at ~85% and would realy like to go to Iceland. However, I've heard that the base in Heflavic (or something like that) no longer belongs to the USAF as of 2006.
Can someone,(preferably from Iceland or in the USAF), clearify upon the matter.
If you are from Iceland or the USAF please say so, so that your statement can be viewed as more accurate. (and be honest) |

The dream sheet is a lie...
I put in for nothing but places close to Oklahoma...and they stuck me in friggin' Japan...
I put in for stuff real close to Oklahoma again...they stuck me in Georgia...
ARGH!
get with your recruiter...DEMAND that you get your station of choice put in your contract otherwise you wont join. Also, see about being a UAV pilot...they're starting to let enlisted personnel into that career field now. Thought of cross training myself...
If you have any other questions let me know.

This is where I've gone before but I've heard people saying that either their is another base or that Keflavik is still used by the USAF to some extent, and BTW always take wikipedia with a big grain of salt sience it is open to anyone and not all references are compleatly accurate.

So are you current or active?
What are you doing or did in the Air Force sience the job plays a big factor in where you get stationed
Iceland is only one of several locations I'd like to be in.
I'm planing on joining TACP (Tactical Air Control Party).
I considered UAV, UCAV, or MAV piloting, but is not a priority of mine.
...Nice corp name |

Well, I'm active duty. Joined up in '03 after high school. I went in Open Mechanic...so no real career chosen. They chose for me...I went to tech school to be a Vehicle Operator. I'm basically a taxi driver for whatever base I'm at...Aircrew, taxi, DV, 18wheelers, forklifts, wrecker, and *coughbusescough*
However when we deploy we do convoys throughout Iraq/Afgan. Not too many career fields do 6 month deployments like we do. Most are 3 or 4 months, but there has been rumors of increasing it to 6 for all.
Your job does play a role in what base you go to. If a job doesn't require your job, then odds of being stationed there are nil. Which is why I'm not going to ever be stationed in Hawaii
I hope you're in good physical shape, because the AF is gearing up on beefing up the PT program dramatically.
heh, my corp name is the bestest

If the US does get on Iceland's good side I'll voluntier to go there on the spot but seeing as how Britan has called Iceland a Terrorist and Russia giving out a $6 million bailout, I guess being stationed there as being very unlikely but, oh well.
what rank are you anyway or are you willing to say so under the eyes of you corp mates?
A general question how do I show what corp I'm in on a forum post?

If he's joining, he'll be an Airman Basic during traning, then promoted to either an Airman, Airman First Class, or Senior Airman depending on what level of schooling he has. (Amn for no college, A1C for 60 credits /associates degree, SrA for bachelor's degree) |

jeez, 4 months? you guys sure have it easy . Unlike those poor SOB in the Army that gets stuck with 15 months deployments. But then 4 months is barely worth the trouble of going through the build-up... I probably wouldn't even bother unpacking my sea bag :)

a quick look at that wiki link shows that NATO had shut the base down back in 06, and the base itself is being converted for civilian use by the Icelandic Gov't. Same thing when googling, just about every link is about the base closure.
So I'd have to say your dream of being stationed in Iceland is... well, non-existent :p
And yes, whatever your recruiter promised you, it's not true unless you see it clearly written on your contract. The lying recruiters is one thing that's common across all 5 branches of the service |

The airbase is no more. The housing for staff has mostly been re-purposed as student accommodation and the facilities at the airport are being converted to civilian (light industrial) use. I believe there's still some form of SAR operation out of Keflavik which is using the military part, but that's not run by the USAF. |

Yea, Personally I feel that 9months should be the maximum deployment frame. Not too long, not too short. I'm nearing the end of my 6 month deployment currently. Can't wait to get back. The girl to guy ratio here is horrible
Heh, we havn't used the Bikes in almost 10 years now I think, maybe a bit more.
For the question on my rank. Been in 5 years, I'm Senior Airman, E-4. I'm getting out, so I never bothered studying for the tests, missed each time by less than 10 points lol.

So, we're doing USAF rollcall? I was stationed at Kelfavik back when I was still an aircraft maintainer. I was one of the last Black Knights (57th FIS) and was there when they closed down the squadron. The russians just quit flying. No point in an interceptor squadron with nothing to intercept.
Anyway, it's too bad you can't go there anymore. It was a pretty cool short tour.

I've been stationed at:
Misawa AB, Japan Patrick AFB, FL, USA Osan AB, Korea Ramstein AB, Germany Pope AFB, NC, USA Tyndall AFB, FL, USA
Plus a few other places on deployment...
Anyway, the ONLY times you can place even a small amount of faith in the dream sheet is...
A: When you have a "Follow-on" assignment base of preference (but still not 100% sure)
B: When you ask to be assigned some place unpopular (also not 100% sure...)
A lot depends on 'projected' manning in your career field at that location. You can actually research this, but as above, its still not a sure thing...
(The ONLY time I got my choice was when I had a follow on....)
Play nice while you butcher each other.

You can go to this website to locate bases. Iceland is no longer an option.
Of my 7 "choices" I got the last, which was California. I traded it for Yokota AB in Japan. So glad I did because Japan was great. I hope to go back someday. This was over 20 years ago.

Ok, me thinks I should have worded the question differently;
I'm quite sure the Keflavik NAB is no longer under US use. However, I would like to know more about what the oppinions and resons surrounding its existance and closer were. I have read most of the articles that google and other search engiens have pulled up but I'd like to here it from whoever was stationed there or live(d) nearby.
I have even written a 5 page paper on Iceland for my geopolitics class but never got enough info about the base that I could quote because it was mostly cut up and edited lines and phrases of interviews with "experts" by reporters, nither of which actualy whent to the base itself or the streets of Keflavik to ask the people who were affected the most by the bases presence and closer. |

Also was in the Air Force 1992-1996. Was lucky enough to get Bitburg.
Keflavik is a very popular assignment in the USAF. However it takes luck to get is, and it depends on your PCS status - they might send you there as alone or with family.
Yes, dream sheet is the proper term.
The worst places: Mynot ND, and any base within driving distance of Washington DC (where you will be painting rocks every day because some general is going to drive by) |
