Freespace 2 is possibly the best space combat game the world will ever see. In before Ralara. |

Agreed.
Pretty sure it is out there for free now too (legitimately free) with some mods as well. Not sure...been awhile since I have looked and might be confusing it with something else.
ETA: I-War was pretty great too. No clue if you can find that anywhere these days though.

I agree, I-War and IW2:EOC were awesome.
I still have the install for EOC around here somewhere.

The X-wing series of space sims were great, I loved them. Freespace 2 is more playable though, and looks better, these days. They are pretty similar, and I couldn't pick one over the other.
As I said to the last guy that posted this question, I like to still play around with Fragile Allegiance. Also, if you like BSG you can check out "Beyond the red line", its a demo for a TC of the freespace 2 engine. Its short, but pretty cool. __

Wow, I thought it was only me who remembered Fragile Allegiance! I loved that game, really engrossing and fun. 12 years old now.... makes me feel ancient. |

Someone mentioned Fragile Allegiance?
That was an epic and also frustrating game. Especially when the Mikotaj start close to you and hurl missiles from the get-go. Still, send a stasis missile back and then hundreds of other ones. Watch them hang in the "atmosphere" and then all come crashing down at once when the stasis wears off.
Freespace 1 and 2 still are one of the best space games around. The plot, the action, the multiplayer, the giant capital beams cutting chunks off cruisers...the list goes on. The mission in FS2 where the Sathanas I think it was jumps and you have to hit your afterburners and fly down or you get squashed by it is probably the best intro to a mission ever. |

Privateer 2 - The Darkening.
Wins every time. Best Space flight game ever created, massive involving story, a reason to do the missions, but also ends with a bang and remains open ended and doesn't just go "okay get out now, game is over".

But those games require a Joystick. Where am I supose to get a cheap but decent joystick these days (I live in Portugal).
When I was a kid I had one. I played so much with it that I eventually broke it, I think it was my grandpa that opened it and fixed it. I broke it again eventually. Good ol' times!

Could look on Ebay then, or just go to an online store like Pixmania, they've got a Portugese flag on their map, so shipping and whatnot shouldn't be a problem. |

There is always Master of Orion 2. Might be a bit dated on the graphics but the gameplay is still solid gold and can be had for as little as $5 online. |

Edited by: Max Godsnottlingson on 23/01/2009 11:32:41 As an off-line counter point to Eve I've been looking at the 'X' series of game, my local store has both X2 and X3 on it's shelves.
Has anybody played them, and can you give any comments of they are worth the time? |

they need a lot of time invested in them, the engine is bad and awkward, but it feels like eve offline at times, if you invest the time its a lot of fun, but you'll spend a lot more time trading in a hauler than fighting in a combat ship (I find anyway)
x3 has a massive Xtended mod and numerous patches making it really large and (even more) open ended with extra ships, I would say get x3 Reunion and give it a few days, if you get into it, you'll get sucked into it big time, and it can be a lot of fun |

I don't believe so, the original FS2 EULA had a wierd clause in it that let you burn copies for friends, but I think it was removed in later re-relases. The good news is you can get it off Good Old Games for $6, so who cares?
If you've got the game you'll want to grab turey's installer so you can get the community enhancements. Hard-light productions is also worth checking out.

starlancer is too old, its not comfortable to play anymore, its keyboard only like wing commander, freelancer on the other hand is amazing.
