I was told that wrecks tend to lose a disproportionate amount of gear if there is 'overkill' damage on the target. So if the target's hull is hanging on by a thread, and a full volley of torpedoes is about to impact...
Does every mod worth over 100 mil vaporize?!

Overkill isn't calculated. A ship only takes as much damage as is needed to hit zero hull HP. |

I heard that it was possible to "overkill" and the extra damage goes to the mods... but I really can't say I've ever been able to tell the difference |

The 1.5 bill Pith-A med booster could've dropped too.
I'm just wondering does overkill happen, and if so does it affect more valuable components more so?

I never get why you see so many (relatively) killmails where mission runners have implants in their cargohold. What, do they get a +4 IMPLANT EMERGENCY and they need to learn faster STAT? |

Over damage does actually hits the target but it has nothing to do with mods drop or not, it actually affects modules health, if you experience over damage you will see in the final half second before you burst into flames that some of your mods may take damage like they are overloaded (even mods that cant overload) - after that you pop, some mods drop others don't, if any of the modules that have taken over damage drop ppl would have to repair them before they can be repackaged. That's over damage.
