Well hopefully its something rather obvious that I missed that is causing this slowdown because it looks like there is a LOT of potential here. The graphics display perfectly so other than the low FPS issue the game looks like it'll work just fine once I get the FPS to a playable rate. I'm looking at FPS in space of around 8-15 FPS while in Windows its closer to 50-60 fps. So I could use some help & suggestions on what to check here. Read through some other threads and tried some suggestions but its possible I missed something.
Hardware configuration
P4 3.0GHz (Northwood) 2GB RAM GeForce 7800GS (256MB RAM)
Software
Ubuntu 8.10 Wine 1.1.13 Latest EvE Premium client Nvidia 177 Accelerated drivers (installed via the restricted drivers manager)
I should note a couple of things:
1) I upgraded wine from 1.0.1 to 1.1.3 without re-installing EvE 2) I followed the instructions here: http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Install_EVE_on_linux_with_wine#Configuring_Wine_to_work_with_EVE to get it all working 3) I turn off Compviz when running EvE via command line with the metacity --replace & command
Thanks for your help folks.

Edit: And once again within minutes of posting a technical problem on the forums I figure out what the problem was & get the issue fixed. Turns out that there was a rogue gnome-panel processing gobbling up CPU like there was no tomorrow. Killed the process and I get a drastic increase in FPS. Looking at around 35-40 FPS in space. Much better and on a playable level. However if anybody wants to add some tweaks that I can do to get it a bit higher that'd be great. GeForce 7800GS (256MB RAM)
Get more Ram. You should see a performance boost. |

Your running in premium graphics mode? Try switching to classic, I'm runing ubuntu 8.10 and wine 1.1.13 nvidia drivers 177.82 and i get great framerates on 2 monitors at the same time in full screeen (1280 x 1024 and 1680 x 1050 resoultions) I run in classic mode though, premium is not worth the fps hit imo esp when running 2 clients at the same time, also what type of nvidia card are you using? that could be the problem as well that or your CPU, its kinda old now a C2D chip of even lower speed will offer a performance increase
my system specs are Core 2 Duo E4400 overclocked to 3.0 ghz 2GB DDR2 @ 800mhz Geforce 8800 GT
I get 120+ fps docked 40-80 fps in space
I get higher FPS in windows of course, but its completely playable in linux with wine on my machine
