I know you don't want to accept it, but the good old days are over.
90 day to 60 day jump meant an immediate 33% rise in demand, then combine with growing eve population, and the current prices are NORMAL. It can only rise further from here on.

The current ISK value of GTC's is outrageous.
The only people who would say otherwise are trolls or those actually doing the selling.
Arguments for high prices seem to be summarized as "I have extra real money so I'm better than you." (in the worst cases) and "Supply and Demand" (in the best cases.)
The S&D argument is valid. The demand is inelastic (if you couldn't afford a sub before, it's unlikely you can afford a sub now, especially in the cases of people with many accounts.), so a decrease in supply caused a disproportionate increase in price.
Using the USD price of GTCs...
60 days come to 58 cents a day. Old 90 day cards used to come to 39 cents a day. Effectively a 50% price increase. (48.7 to be exact, but it's close enough).
A 50% increase in GTC cost led to a 250% price increase. (30d for 150M became 30d for 375M).
Supply and demand may be (read: is) the culprit of course. With 90d cards gone, demand actually increased (people buy more often) while supply likely decreased due to increased cost. But: it doesn't change the fact that she situation is out of hand.
Obviously sellers aren't going to sell for less when the cards are going for so much. If they try to, people will buy them, PLEX them, and resell them for a profit. Most buyers aren't going to stop buying either, though. So the situation will only worsen without some intervention to increase the supply of GTC's being sold.
Unfortunately, human nature in general will stop any useful change. The sellers want to make as much as possible. You can call this 'greedy' if you want, but when was the last time you sold anything for less than it was worth to be nice? Or went to work at half wage/salary/etc to be nice? Doesn't happen. The buyers on the other hand, want people to stop buying until prices drop... but THEY can't be bothered to stop buying gtcs! They have to keep those accounts running! It's clearly everyone elses fault. |

Your statements are a lil wrong, 90 day to 60 day jump doesn't by default mean 33% increase in demand of 60day codes because theres no guarantee that 1/3 ppl bought 90day timecards, infact its more likely to be the lower end of the spectrum. Secondly you forgot that 30day codes went aswell... basically all demand was consolidated into one product.. so overall affect on demand probably didn't change. Eve's growing population... we've just had one of the slowest growth years for eve in a long time between 10k-20k new accounts in the past year compared to more than double that the previous year (Do not start quoting Peak User Records... number of players currently on the server doesn't equate to how good the subscriber base is). The price shift is still to be expected anyway but not due to the reasons you stated.
Several things are knocking about the price of gtc's atm, current economic conditions been one, certain sellers are seeing the value of their currency against the euro or dollar slip this robs them of the advantage of been able to purchase gtc's at a cheap rate's for them, this lead's to gtc traders either dropping out of the market or are demanding more for their buck driving supply down and prices up.
With ppl killing off their second accounts (im refering to ppl that pay at least one of their accounts with rl cash) less isk is likely to be produced and spent on items ingame (or even etc's) that isk inturn is then not available to those industrious lil ppl that take advantage of the economy to generate isk to buy their etc's. Thus demand falls a bit, there is however a counter result... some will decide to switch their second accounts over etc's increasing demand probably more than the fall in demand originally caused.
Basically supply has dropped off while demand has increased... how ever the demand increase is far more volatile because there are many things that can upset it, sudden recovery in the value of a rl currency, a sudden ability to produce more isk, a drop off of available liquid isk in the market (take note of this one as it will happen when T3 kicks in alot of ppl will go around buying stuff for t3 and isk will vanish from the economy for a couple of months before the isk production ramps up as a result of the t3 stuff been used, produced and sold).
People also have a mental value of what a certain amount of isk should cost in rl cash... in reality they shouldn't because that conjurers up thought of RMT but thanks to etcs ppl do have a indirect isk to rl cash comparison. If ETC isk prices reach a value where ppl think its too much isk they will switch to rl cash payments or simply stop playing removing another customer from the ETC market.
The ETC market also behaves a little strangely compared to most markets... in that people rarely try and undercut, they want every bit of isk for their cash, only ppl trying to generate isk in a hurry tend to undercut otherwise the market remains very static rarely moving downwards how ever price rises don't follow that model, if someone puts there price up by a nominal amount (not huge perhaps 5-10 mil) some idiot will buy that when there's a whole host of offers just that lil bit cheaper and quite often other sellers will then move in the same direction thinking... he's got 5-10 mil more I want that extra isk match his price, so the entire market takes a tiny step up that most ppl won't even blink at.
There is one thing coming though that make drastically burst the bubble of ETC's m10 if we do see massive growth, chances are there will be alot of new etc sellers but the demand for etc's will probably be slower to rise which will force prices down for a while. |

You are wrong, plain and simple. Talk to GTC sellers. In the day of 30 and 90 days it was fairly difficult to sell a GTC. Almost immediately after the 60 day change the buyers outnumbered the sellers by a wide margin, and any reasonably average priced sell on the forum was snapped up instantly.
Also, even though demand didn't change this summer supply sure did. Casual sellers evaporated ($36 is far more to blow on a whim than $15), and 'serious' sellers need to sell far fewer cards as prices go up. So supply keeps shrinking even if we assume a flat demand.
Ghost training nerf raised demand even more.
And in conclusion, I've worked hard on raising PLEX prices to the levels they are today. I see no reason why PLEXes should trade below 500M in the near future. People cried when 30 days hit 300M, they'll cry more when they're 400 and they'll keep crying at 500M and beyond. |
