I installed ubuntu onto an unused partition today because I wanted to learn how to use it.
First: download wine/firefox 3.0. Second: How do I install something??!!
I booted back into Vista because I couldn't figure out how to install (or even find sound card drivers for Linux, stupid creative) some of my drivers.
Umm, I think I'll do some reading from the safety of Windows |

well first, what type of software? is it a packaged RPM? or is the software something u downloaded to the internet? if its a rpm pop in the disk and boom, or go to the add/remove section by going to applications. just out of curiosity what type of software do u plan on running? Wine can be download from its website, usually in .dep format, just download it and your all set.

Ubuntu should come with a tool called "synaptics" this will allow you to browse available software and do an automated install of what you want, most popular and important apps are here.
Think about it as windows add remove software on steriods.
it should be somewhere in your sytem tools menus, cant off the top of my head remember, it may just be named "package manager"
Until you get going this should be an easier way. |

And yes, i was using that tool, and apparently it installed wine. The hardware driver thingy also installed my nvidia drivers, but I never restarted. Couldn't find my audio ones, tho. Frustrating. I just need to do some digging.
Edit: Driver CD that came with it is a windows one (.exe, and ubuntu doesn't like .exe's as I discovered...) |

Firefox 3.05 should be included by default in Ubuntu. Did you install from some old CD and didnt run the Administration -> Update Manager after install?
Installing programs is just Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager or Applications -> Add/Remove. I rarely use the graphical stuff though. If you read about a good program and want to try it, all you need to do is type "sudo apt-get install <programname>" in the terminal. For example, "sudo apt-get install gimp". It will download and install automatically. All you need to do afterwards is to type gimp to start it. Its easier than in Windows.
Browse around in http://ubuntuforums.org, its a very good forum for learning more. And usually you get a reply within minutes if you have questions.
Oh, and... go to http://www.gnome-look.org/ as quickly as possible so you dont think the default Ubuntu look is how its supposed to look. Its butt ugly from a default install, you really want to change that as quick as possible so your eyes dont start to bleed.

Type "lspci -tv" in a terminal. Then you can type "man lspci" to learn more about it. |
