Edited by: AnonyTerrorNinja on 01/02/2009 00:35:45 (there was a whole bunch of utter drivel here, but I snipped it to save you the displeasure of reading it)
I made this stuff while we didn't have international internet access over the past few days.
Boredom launcher base model in the center and rough let's-see-how-long-it-would-take-to-make-this T1 and T2 rocket launcher base models flanking it. For size comparison, I'd say the model in the center represents a cruise launcher - rotational capacity is not required as the range cruise missiles have offsets the necessity to launch in the direction of the target.
Boredom Launcher
I may work more on these models, but chances are good that like my hybrid drone mini-project-test-type-thingus they'll just fall by the wayside.
*edit* Forgot about this poorly lit and badly directed rotational video for the hybrid drone. ---

I like. Rugged and utilitarian but 'futuristic' (Does anyone use that word anymore?) at the same time.

While those are lovely and such, i like missiles having no visible modules. Ive always thought that the way guns look in eve always just seemed 'wrong', like little things glued on at the last minute. And ive always hated their jerky movements when they are at the same time unable to track something that is moving quickly, it just felt 'wrong'.
They need to redo guns actually.

did you model all of the little details on the ship?
you might want to make those normal maps like they did for eve so it would run in a game :P
But other than that, they are badass.
stupid school doesn't let me show work we have an NDA lol.

bff Jill, I imagine guns are getting a re-do in the near'ish future, as it's already been admitted that the weapon effects themselves need a re-do.
The drake was the first ship to have 'visible' launchers, but in its case it kind of only works because the ship has only launcher slots to begin with. On the other hand, it looks silly to me that there are 'visible launchers' where there may not be any fitted in the first place.
Mothermoon, I modeled all of those details, yeah. Normal mapping would be done once the modeling phase is complete to replace any and all indented surfaces possible, but obviously one shouldn't begin texturing before the model itself is completed, or you just break your UVW maps and have to redo those.
Unfortunately none of my projects have really progressed to a proper texturing phase, and I have only recently done my first semi-manual UVW unwrap (and now that I see how it works, I'm fapping at the possibilities as far as texturing goes).
When I finally manage to find my old photoshop disc or gather the nerve to learn to love gIMP, I'll do some texturing on the 'shields' of the boredom launcher to test my UVW map.
On the bright side, the Boredom Launcher is currently at about 1,500 polys and can definitely stand to lose a hundred or two. ---

Not quite sure what the numbers are for, Sheriff.
Doing low poly models of your thumbs and private part shouldn't be hard tho... Will see what I can do :P
Unfortunately I've had terrible luck when it comes to organic modeling over all - my best pet project to date has been this.
I'll maybe give modeling up some homeless and elite slaves a go sometime, tho. Will be sure to make a light animation of them bouncing off some Amarrian vessels for you. ;P

So, downtime happened and I was apparently awake. Having finished doing what I could around the house, my boredom launcher hit me for 1,337.00 damage, inducing a heavy bout of modeling.
The end result is what I have dubbed the Overseer. This one's stylization is leaning towards Caldari.
The concept of an Overseer is similar to a logistic ship, only instead of having long ranged targeted modules, it has a limited range and limited effectiveness AOE module instead. It has no offensive capabilities and has only limited defensive capabilities, requiring that it be remotely assisted by a dedicated logistics wingman and/or remote repair ships of whatever other kind.
The base hull, the big bulky part, is of course by no means anywhere near finished, hence its complete and utter lack of detail (and the 'big ugly blob' or bub look). The notch in the front is for an animation lending on the concept talked about by the devs at one of the fanfests regarding interactive particles; instead of just any old sphere, the ship would launch a small force of micro-drones (completely uncontrolled by the player; the 'antennae' on the head of the ship are responsible for controlling them). These micro-drones would target and assist (with no client side notification on the client being assisted) any friendly ships within range.
T1 versions would have similar bonuses to their 'logistics' counterparts.
Amarr; AOE Capacitor supply Caldari; AOE Shield supply Gallente; AOE Armor supply Minmatar; AOE Weapons Stabilization (with the all-new added effect of attaching the micro-drones to missiles to improve their 'accuracy'! egad!)
T2 versions would again have the same effects as their T2 logistics counterparts.
Amarr; AOE Capacitor and Armor, capacitor primary Caldari; AOE Shield and Capacitor, shield primary Gallente; AOE Armor and Weapons Stabilization, armor primary Minmatar; AOE Shields and Weapons Stabilization, weapons stabilization primary
Anyway, I was bored and stuff - here's the model WIP:

Lawl.
I have to wonder why it is that we don't have an AOE logistic ship/module yet tho... That and a module that operates similarly to a NOS or energy neut that directly attacks the target ship's hull.
A small force of nanobots being streamed to the target ship to strip it from the inside out (extremely slowly mind you) could be a cool weapon...
But anyway, I adjusted the bub a bit to make it less of a bub, and a few other bits. Can't have too many spikes, no sirree, need
more more more and more
In other news, we're out of milk. And coffee.

Minor Update
I am the monologue king!
Anyway
I've started detailing the arms used for the forward sensor clusters. (Since this thing would control hundreds of thousands of micro-drones, it needs a pretty hefty electronics system, right?). Current iteration is meant to kiiind of resemble wings -the bones of, at least- since most Caldari ships have bird names.
Albatross perhaps?
The alternative is that I turn the outer arms, which are meant to be used for generating the control field, into the sensor clusters, and create kind of 'claws' where the current sensor clusters would be.
There's a slight bit of engine detailing going on at the back too, but I'm not going to give any renders of that till it looks more engine-like.
If any of you real CG artists are wondering why I have no concept art I'm working from or the like; I'm terrible at drawing. So terrible in fact, that it's simpler for me to put to a rough 3D model the shape I want, and then refine it from there to reflect what I am imagining.
Not to mention it's faster for me, and I end up having what I was 'seeing' eventually anyway, completely skipping the initial design phase. ---

Actually pretty good. How about you design me a POS as described in this thread?! This way the images can be linked inside the thread and cause more uproar as to why developers have taken years to deliberately ignore it.
A 3D true image can only help... Oh, the rotating one!

Heh, looks interesting.
POS design, as an existing concept in EVE, isn't really in my scope, since CCP no doubt already has ideas for how they want to change POSs, if at all.
Will take a look at it a bit later tho. ---

Well, as I said, just for fun. And, you never know, perhaps your shaded 3D model would bring something - which I am sure it will.

Guess I'll give it a go between finishing this model and starting on a Minmatar or Gallente design :P
Have an Amarrian design in my head, too, but only the front. Can't quite decide what the mid-section or rear should end up looking like, though...
Another minor update
I'm going to remove the large wings on the side in favour of a more lateral design, using the same 'attachment' I put onto the boredom launcher earlier in the thread as the thrusters in the engine assembly.
On a side note - anyone got links to some of the CCP art team members' profiles? Asgeir's portfolio has gone missing, and I'm keen to see more of their work :(
That and, someone inject Maya knowledge into my mind so that I can at least put in an application to work for CCP, as poor as my modeling is in comparison to some of the other EVE players :D ---
