Edited by: Confuzer on 03/02/2009 11:48:07 Even if it's fusion, you need some action - reaction mechanism which implies throwing rocks away from your ship with super velocity to gain momentum. So it's not endless which it does seem to be. The only thing I can think of, is that they harvest atoms from space and create heavy water for fusion with vacuum extracting energy. Odd thing is these engines keep on, even when not accelerating. So they are bugged. Although, eve devs seem to think space is a liquid. We rather replace space with underwater scenery then, like fluidic space from species 8xxxx from Star Trek. ----------------- Destiny is not a matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It's not a thing to be waited for - it is a thing to be achieved. |

Edited by: Triffon on 03/02/2009 11:49:17 Cool so what im getting from this is it could be like the nuclear reactors that needs to only refuel like every 40 years or so. Also the type of fuel i was thinking that ran the ships was from solor radiation from each star in each of the systems.
This is great to read all the replys and have a bit of a laugh. It would be good to see some more ideas on how eve ships are powered and what you think it is that runs them.
Thanks

A Ship's reactor isn't on all the time, only when the cap is not 100% full, and the full power core system is only on when it's really down. |

If you really want to know, create a new alt and do the tutorial. The whole process is explained in detail. Each ship carries a tiny singularity. Interstellar gases are collected and feed in. The violent reaction of the gases crossing the event horizon provide power to the capacitor. |

you are told in the tutorial that your power grid is accused by a fusion reactor. It says the reactor is perpetual however nothing can truly be perpetual. what is most likely referring to is a fusion reactor that has enough fuel to maintain the reaction for longer then we are bothered to care about say 400years.
propellant is based on the materialising of energy into mass and ejection of the material. Specific ideas on how the technology works are derived from the principles behind the components in building T2 ships. or just look here |

How?.. well the idea is to extract the hydrogen from water and thats the fuel, but the convertion process uses up enourmous amounts of energy, which I assume comes from the capacitor.
Sorry, but I'm going to sound like a nerd, and ruin your fun.
Where does the energy for the capacitor come from? That's right, it'd have to come from that reaction you just described. You just got hit in the face by the law of conservation of energy. |

Too lazy to run through all the explanations and hilarious comments.
The answer is simple though, everything on the ship runs on the Capacitor.
Now the UI of the capacitor we have in game is just giving you how much 'Cap' can be allocated to axillary systems such as weapons, shield boosters ect. Obviously they wouldn't design the ships so that you can run yourself completely dry firing those lasers so that things like life-support or engines fail. Would be cool though if you could reroute all available cap to say, weapons, in exchange for not being able to move or something.
Maybe I'm off but I'm sure I read this or saw this explanation by a Dev or something...seems right to me. |
