It's a fact: every noob orbit the roids.
Once the player is grown, he leaves this stupid behavior.

Orbiting stuff is cool. From a "this is cool to me" perspective.
If you followed me around for a while, you'd notice i often chase custom officers or orbit gates for the heck of it |

Weird. They probably don't know other means of getting near things than orbit/approach, and approach is just plain annoying due to bumping into the object. |

…also, suicide gankers tell you to, so you're not such a static target for the smartbomb-nutcakes currently in warp to land right on top of you. |

Its slightly more exciting than just sitting there stareing at the 'roid, listening to the little bzzzrt noises.

I don't know why you shouldn't if you're in a small fast frig mining. It's kinda more fun than sitting still.

Orbiting increases your tank. After you have some skills trained it's less important(in hisec). I know plenty of people who orbit their can in 0.0 when perma-tanking large rat spawns.

Harder to be bumped off the roid
If everyone orbited, i would have less fun By the way, does it annoy you when you didnt realise that you were reading my sig? |

Which is kind of funny in itself, that people do this irrelevant thing knowing it wont affect their mining amount.

People get dumber as they get older. If you orbit the roids you take less damage from turret weapons and big missiles. It might be the deciding factor in whether or not you survive a suicide gank attempt.

Tutorial tells people to orbit, and newbies know nothing about the joys of pre-align. Orbiting may make it harder for turrets to hit you, but it's even harder for a turret to hit you if you insta-warp when a baddie shows up. --

We ran into a small group of orbiting Hulks, after toying with them (grabbign their ore) they didn't react AT ALL, and when the oretype they were mining ran out they kept moving in a random direction.
So, as far as I can see; they're macros.

Conclusion: N00bs do the right thing, but don't know why. "Vets" do the wrong thing, because they still don't know why, and then whine when they get blown up. Everyone else gets to point and laugh. |

The answer is obvious. People do this to keep their transversal velocity up in case of return fire from the little space gnomes who live on the asteroids.

You don't have to BM any roids in any belt, if you make a BM above the belt ( at least 150km, I usually do 175km). You can then warp to any roid at say, 10km off, pre align and mine away:)
Also has the advantage of doubling as a sniper point later. |

Also, I never orbited the 'roids, even during the tutorial. I guess that means I was less of a noob than most - sweet... ___________________________________ CCP Greyscale: Pie is not compatible with the dark, dangerous nature of EVE. Because you need to practise tracking somehow. Personally I prefer webbing the roids so they cant escape, and having someone sensor damping me so I cant hear them scream. |

Better question, why does anyone care? You need therapy if this has you so worked up you felt the need to make a post about it.
I might need therapy because I'm replying to this post instead of going to sleep. |
