I know that this has probably been suggested before, but after reading and listening to a bunch of things about past expansions, this upcoming expansion, and thinking ahead beyond an idea struck me again - one that is especially sensitive to me as a person who often flies small, fast ships: simulated spaceflight. Now I realize that EVE probably would never go to a stick and full flight controls like a flight/spaceflight simulator would (or like games in the past such as Jumpgate), but would it be possible to ever see some more minor WASD-based controls? I feel that if some controls other than just point and click were utilized, then it would bring a whole new level to PvP and make it that much more fun to fly smaller and faster ships.
Anyone else have any thoughts?

Would be fun to fly "fighters" from carriers. The way CCP is I don't know if anything like this will ever happen...aparently they'd rather make you walk in stations than to properly fly a spaceship...

Yes, it has been suggested before...
Players already complain about the lag affecting them during blob fights. And that's only sending enough data traffic to say "Orbit target. Fire"
If a battle of 400 vs 400 were using WASD controls... that'd be 800 different keypresses trying to relay back and forth to a single server.
Besides, your character has all the training in how to fly a spaceship. Your skill sheet says so. Just think of it as "you" behind the keyboard, being the captain and issuing orders to the helmsman. |

Exactly. This is how I think of it. I would find WASD in this game more a novelty than an actual useful functionality, personally. I also tend to think in terms of being a captain. In fact, I've been looking at my computer desk chair as a captain's chair, ever since I got a new one that just screamed 'captain's chair'.. "Sulu, go to warp." "I am firing torpedo!"* XD

Actually i think all moves are calculated locally, in your client, then your position is constantly relayed to the server and then out to all those who can see you. So a WASD control wouldn't slow it down, not really. But i think that CCP focuses on other things. It would be cool to be able to manually steer ones' spaceship, but its not a high prio of the Devs, methinks. |

The point isn't how long it would take for the movement to be calculated, it's how long it takes for it to get sent to the server and relayed back to your client. Have you ever changed your orbit distance and clicked orbit and noticed a delay between you clicking the button and your ship responding? Imagine that delay with every keypress, and how much more often you would press a WASD key than you send navigation commands to your ship now. |

I think manual firing guns and missiles would likely be introduced before CCP let you use a joystick to free fly :(

would be nice for certain tactics, to be able to adjust your vector a little, would help with tras. and would help you have a better seance of position. but the added lag would not make it worth while. not till they find a way of stopping blob warfare.witch will probably never happen, face it, superior numbers wins over skills all day. this has been the stable of 0.0 for too long to change now.

A while ago I posted an idea about Vector Based Navigation that could be introduced for greater flight control without adding (much) more lag.
WASD controls or joystick would require too many server calls to be feasible as already was said.

CCP has some stuff planned for twitch based flight. Won't be out for a long time, but the might do it eventually. Check out the Fanfest Vids, should be in there somewhere.
