EVEaholic wants your help!
A little preamble, first... I'm a long-term EVE player. Not as long as some, but fairly long-term. I've not played EVE on Linux for a while now, as I'm still tethered to WinXP on my main machine. I use Linux on my other machines, including my eeePC laptop for skill changes. So I'm not the most qualified to run EVE on Wine, not by a long shot.
This is something of a call to arms, and something of a shameless plug.
I've set up a Wordpress instance over at http://eveaholic.mmmetrics.co.uk/ (I will see about sorting out a domain name when I have money!). It's not got much on it, except one post and a few basic guides, mostly targeting Ubuntu.
I'm not a huge EVE Linux user, as I've said, but I still think that the community deserves more than a forum with a 78-page thread as the main source of information. A proper website with well-written, tested and verified guides is sorely lacking. So that's the niche that EVEaholic is looking to fill- a simple site with relevant news, excellent easy-to-follow guides that cater to both advanced and basic audiences, and tips/tricks from the community for things like voice communications and third party tools. That's the plan.
Now, the execution. I've already had one person step up to volunteer, and I'm doing the best I can with a bunch of Virtualbox instances, but what I would love is to get more contributors coming forward to lend their experience, expertise and knowledge to help new and old players looking to use EVE under Wine. Contributing is easy and could be no more than hanging out in the IRC channel and suggesting tips/tricks, or you could write full-blown articles/guides.
If you're interested, hop onto IRC- irc.coldfront.net on the #eveaholic channel- or send me an evemail/convo ingame. |

Very good idea. I could provide domainname, webspace and free traffic.

The site already exists :) I run quite a few webapps, so unless this starts pushing a few terabytes a month I'll be able to host it just fine. Will be buying the domain in a few days, but that subdomain I linked above is active and working (and will continue to do so). -- Ix Forres EVE Application Developer ISKsense | EVE Metrics (NEW) | I Tweet |

X up for community Eve support ;)
I'm far from a wine expert (tried before, too many scary windows like but scarier spurious junk for my liking).
But I personally run Fedora for pleasure (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Centos, RHEL and FreeBSD for processional)
I can offer some expertise in packaging(rpm's debs etc), heard some small exited squeek from someone else when i mentioned that. Not 100% sure that that would entail for eve, but we can look at it.
Other skills too, which I am too modest to mention here lol.
When i get the time I will contact you direct.
Fantastic offer of the space, name and bandwidth above me btw :D Nice one! Come on people, there can be use in every single kind of help you can offer, guide writers, language translators of guides, GFX geeks, driver geeks, testers, people who use different systems. You know the drill.

Packaging is interesting- would CCP permit third parties to package up EVE, that's the question..
The more distros we can cover the better- I'm an Ubuntu junkie myself for all my other machines, but Fedora, Suse and Mandriva are three others I think would be beneficial. Maybe even a Gentoo one, though we'll have to write that in binary so they don't feel like it's too easy *Ducks*. More the merrier, really :D
If you want to start contributing, the IRC channel is the place to be, and you can register on the site at http://eveaholic.mmmetrics.co.uk/wp-admin/- this will let me set you up as an editor. |

I've been thnking for a while that it is a shame that there are no deb/rpm packages for EVE that take care of the dependencies. While I don't think that CCP would have a problem with a package including EVE - that's IMHO not an issue as AFAIK packages can contain scripts - which in turn could download the eve client from eve-online. It's the same total size whether the client is included in a GB package - or if a small package pulls in a GB client. Would only make a difference for CDs.

deb and rpm packages for Ubuntu, Fedora and Suse would cover the vast majority of desktop users. But I'm sure when that is done Gentoo and ArchLinux packages won't be far off as somebody will add that.
Hm - I was anyway looking for a project to get experience with deb packaging.
Sadly I get connection errors when I try to access http://eveaholic.mmmetrics.co.uk. Well - worked after re-try. |

The only issue I can see is if we as linux users move away from the eve online boards, CCP will ignore our section of the community even more than they have to date.
A repository of good information is available already for use in the EVE wiki. It would be my suggestion that we use that FIRST and other sites secondary simply from a "visibility" standpoint.
This isn't a knock on your idea, but from the "squeaky wheel gets the grease" metaphor, moving away from "here" seems to me to be counter productive. Using EVE's resources FIRST to provide assistance support and setup know how would keep us visible to them.
As to a package for linux distros, as EVE is a FREE download, and cannot work without activation AND CCP has already assisted gentoo users in this regard, I would think that a simple mail to support@ccpgames clarifying any potential IP issues would be more than adequate.

If you want, I have the eve-linux.org domain. Just tell me the host IP.
It was for a Linux distribution but I have currently no time for the project. I have a base prototype bootable. I have recompiled everything with P4 and A64 optimisation. I use pacman from arch-linux.

Host IP is 77.74.196.169 if you want to point it that way- I'll set up the domain on the server tonight.
Regarding Evelopedia- I would agree, but the Evelopedia project only has some very sketchy guides and most relating to CCP's official client. The fact that anyone can edit means that guides which are tested and reliable are difficult to maintain, as after testing someone who thinks they know better could make a small change which breaks that guide and we'd be none the wiser. It's also a right pain in the arse to maintain things on there (A reason why I stopped trying to help out there), and you can't go more than 10 edits without an edit war over something fickle.
By having a stable website which is properly edited and tested, much in the same way CCP's knowledgebase works, this is not a problem, and we can make a single site with a single purpose dedicated to the topic. This is obviously a lot neater than having resources hidden off in a wiki. The guides up on the wiki already are not exactly in-depth, but could be easily mirrored on to EVEaholic and a link to the site placed on the wiki, making it just as easy for people to get information on the topic.
On a side note, it's interesting CCP have produced this: http://support.eve-online.com/Pages/KB/Article.aspx?id=499. It's a nice idea but lacks enough information for Wine to actually result in a working setup of EVE Online, unfortunately. |

In most co cases to run EVE on Linux you just have to: 1. Install MS Core fonts 2. Download and copy d3dx9_36 to system32 wine dir. 3. Change [Software\\Wine\\Direct3D] stuff
Done on several machines with Linux always worked.
PS. Maybe I could provide bash install script for that (detect wine version, Linux distro and add EVE client to it) ... if some1 is interested in participating please write to me ([email protected]) or on jabber (better) [email protected]
EVEaholic - Maybe me/we can use your page as base. Can you add forum to it? Fe. phpbb.

The download/copy d3dx9_36 step- do you have a link for that file? I'll retest and add it to the main guide on the site.
A bash script to do the install automatically would be interesting to see.
Forums; well, we've got here, and there's IRC for quick chats. There's a few people in the #eveaholic channel already, so more the merrier in there . That said I could set something up if people think we need one. -- Ix Forres EVE Application Developer ISKsense | EVE Metrics (NEW) | I Tweet |

A bash script could do it. But the problem with bash scripts is they have to do a lot more work usually (Not always) and wont be able to require certain other things are installed and offer to upgrade them. yum install eve-online.rpm or apt-get eve-online.deb would grab the latest version of wine, could install the dx file & fonts file after. But they would limit the functionality to .debs and .rpms and every system flavour would require their package system. So I don't mind what we go for.
I think perhaps on reflection for simplicity sake we should let people run the package/script first then download and install eve themselves. licensing and legal issues could get messy if were not careful.
I've just got to figure out why my fresh Fedora10 eve install is lagging like hell, and seems to have to access to use a RAM cache (middle option is missing when you press escape and look at gfx tab) -Draco

Edited by: mrkaczor on 12/02/2009 21:50:05 script would do something like this:
- check if wine is installed - if no ask if you want to install (yum, apt, pacman depends on distro) - install ms core fonts - add dx36 file - edit registry - ask if you wish to download eve client and install it, then exit or download and install depends on answer. - some other checks - like graphics drivers, internet connection blablabla :)
that's just 2 min analysis, I will be on IRC tomorrow 9-16 GMT so if you have any thoughts or want to help we can talk then :)

Both can be done by calling winetricks (corefonts and directx9)

Edited by: Ravow on 12/02/2009 22:21:39 I plan to make an ebuild with a "singularity" USE flag.
You emerge EVE: -Wine and dependance are installed -it install EVE and EVE-TEST in /opt/CCP/EVE-Tranquility & /opt/CCP/EVE-Singularity -it install a SH script in /usr/bin.
You, as a user, you run "eve" or "eve -singularity", the script will -Check if a .wine folder exist in your ~ : if no, he will run wine in /dev/null just to create it. -Check if arial.ttf exist in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/Fonts : if no, it will download and copy the font here -Check if d3dx9_35.dll and d3dx9_36.dll exist in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 and if no he will copy the dll (with a license warning as you must have a windows license to have the right to use these dll legally.)
After all these test, if you run EVE for the first time, the script will display useful information (will check if you have a nvidia or ati card) and give some configuration tip.
After, EVE will start!
The script will be ready soon(tm) and I will be able to test it this weekend.
Someone have some recommendation/add on for my script? As I will push it into Funtoo and Gentoo tree.
*EDIT : The registry modification are always needed in Wine 1.1.14?

What do you thing about a diag mode (running "eve -diag")? we can output some information like:
-CPU -Memory -kernel -wine version -Video card vendor string -glx speed test -Any other usefull stuff we can add that can be usefull for debug people using our scripts...

I would be careful about the registry edits. While I agree some need to happen for better performance, I foudn that I needed to delete the line "OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo" to get rid of a random freezing problem in eve. ________________________

I need to have some time to check things with newest wine. I will have terrible weekend but in a week I will try to write 0.1 version of the script. Winetricks is nice idea and I will probably use them. It looks like the most important thing is to check system configuration like wine version, gfx drivers and so on, so it is relatively easy thing to be done.
As I said before jid: [email protected] and mail: [email protected] I will try to be present on EVEaolic irc channel also.

I'd avoid Winetricks; it's simple to install the fonts in any case. As I understand it, WineHQ doesn't accept Winetricks-using bugreports.
Script looks great thus far, though; sorry I keep missing you in IRC. I'm going to set up a repository for the script on Github so we can open things up to collaboration more. I'm gonna set up a forum on the site for discussing, too. -- Ix Forres EVE Application Developer ISKsense | EVE Metrics (NEW) | I Tweet |
