I have only played for a few days. I have a Probe and 4 milion isk so far. So which ship is good move on from now if my main goal is to mine?
I have started to research astrogeology(sp?) and other skills for mining barges, is this a good choice?

If you plan to stay with mining then you probably want to go with a Retriever.
If you want to diversify into combat (either PvE or PvP) then you probably want to go for a Scythe.
Astrogeology will boost your mining yield regardless of what ship type you choose to go with.

I would suggest getting the scythe and getting cruiser to 3 or 4 either way. After that it's up to you, if you wanna go for a battleship (if you want to pvp on the side) or a retriever (if you're hardcore about mining)

Retriever > Covetor > Hulk is a nice barge mining path, and the skills all build off one another along that path. Mining can be nice when you're multitasking (studying, reading, paying bills etc.) as a way to stay connected with the game somewhat and earn some income for combat ships.

A mining Frigate such as the Burst will get you more ore than mining in the Probe. The Probe just has a larger cargo area. So here already you are confronted with the fact that there are two major factors in mining:
1) Mining the ore. 2) Hauling it away.
You can jet can mine by yourself, then come back with a hauler to empty the can but you want to try and be in a quiet system to do that or people will flip your can. Right now - you could mine into the jet can with the burst and haul it away with the Probe - it's just going to take a while. Expanded Cargo Hold II's help.
If you can afford it you could get a second account and put that guy in the hauler. That's what a lot of people do.
Now another thing you can do is to use Giant Secure Containers. Those don't work to badly with a mining frigate though forget hauling in the Probe - get an industrial for this. You get two sets of them, each set being the number you can fit in your hauler. You deploy one set in a .7 or lower system and anchor it, then take the industrial back and put the other set inside it - then get in the mining frigate and go down the line of GSC's filling them up. When they are all full, go get the industrial with the other set inside, come along and empty the deployed ones into the ones in your hauler. Take the ore back and put it in your base. Get in the mining Frigate (or Cruiser) and go fill up the one's you've deployed again.
These GSC's will become useless though once you get a mining barge. The mining barge simply fills them up to fast. So all you can do there is use a jet can.
If you have a buddy or a second account, jettison a bookmark from your hold to create a jet can then move the ore through it from the miner to the hauler. When the hauler is full it delivers it's load to the base and comes back for more.
One problem with using a Burst in .8 and lower systems is that it has no drone. So you can't protect your self against the rats. If you aren't going on to a cruiser - think about training another factions mining frigate - and Drones and Scout Drones to at least one. All the other factions mining frigates have drones. Get salvaging, put a salvager on your hauler and make money off of the rat wrecks.

There is absolutely no reason at all to be flying a Covetor. Racial frigate -> Retriever -> Hulk.
If you know what you're doing you'll make the money to buy a Hulk while you're busy mining in a Retriever and still training to be able to fly a Hulk. The long training skills to get into a Covetor are Astrogelogy 5 and Mining Barge 5 - from there it's only a day to get into a Hulk.
You should learn to fly a cruiser though - if only to let you run level 2/3 missions. level 2 mission running capacity will give you access to "Break Their Will", which is a mission that contains the biggest collection of asteroids you will ever see in hisec, and they will be all yours, the belt will respawn every downtime until the 7 days is up for the mission expiry timer. The mission is trivially easy to complete if you can fly a cruiser and use medium weaponry. "Vengeance" and "Mordus Folly" have huge asteroids too, but they're level 4 missions, with Vengeance being particularly deadly to inexperienced pilots.
Once you get into the Hulk you can worry about training for T2 strip miners and crystals, shield tanking skills, etc. Along the way it will be worth your time learning to use cargo expanders and perhaps the cargo optimisation rigs.
Get EVEmon, start with a blank training plan and plug in these ships/items to train for, in this order:
- Bestower (only train to level 1 or 2 of Amarr Industrial, this ship is only going to be used for hauling until you can fly a Hulk)
- Strip Miner I
- Retriever
- Modulated Strip Miner II
- Veldspar Mining Crystal I
- Hulk
- Expanded Cargohold II
- Mining Laser Upgrade II
- Cargohold Optimization I
By the time you finish that list, you should have some idea about what you're doing.
Oh, and look up "Halada's Mining Guide". Enjoy!

Mara, did YOU do that?
Do you know anyone who has done that?
First off, Expanded Cargo Hold II's are something you should be using near the begining. As is training your Industrial to at least Level IV. After all, you still have to haul the Trit to market.
Now - as to using a Covetor. What is the first rule of EVE? Don't fly what you can't afford to lose.
A Covetor is 17 million ISK or so and a Hulk about 100 million. That and the Covetor is fully insurable where as the Hulk is NOT.
Another factor in owning a Covetor - is that if you do lose the Hulk and can't replace it - you'll have the Covetor to fall back on.
Also another consideration is getting your Support skills trained up so that whatever ship you're flying stands a better chance of surviving an attack.
That, and you don't have to wait until you are in a Hulk to use those Crystals. They work just fine in a Covetor - or a Retriever for that matter.
That and if you want to do anything else besides mining - such as running missions to increase your standings with the bases you use - then that opens up an entire wealth of combat related skills to train - all of which cost money.
Look - if, when you get fully trained to fly a Covetor and you not only have the cash to buy a Hulk but the reserves to replace it if you lose it - then by all means, just spend that 25 million on the skill and train Exhumers. But - if you don't have the money to not only buy a Hulk - but replace it - AND still have some more for the other things you need to do - then don't be putting all your money into one ship.
If you're able to devote yourself to playing this game enough to quickly earn several hundred million ISK - then no problem. But if you can't play this game as much as you'd like - then a 100 million ISK investment (which you can't fully insure) is something you're going to take a long time replacing if you lose it.
So - while you're advice may well be suitable for some people - it isn't suitable for all. So there ARE any number of good reasons to buy a Covetor. It all depends on the individual's situation, what they want to do and how much cash flow they can generate. 100 million ISK is still a lot of money to some people.
